  3. those who decided to stay in the same lab for their PhDs after they graduate from undergrad? I feel like this would do them more harm than good in the future. We had a guest speaker from pharma industry three weeks ago and he mentioned something about how they disfavor applicants like them, most of time they don't even look at their applications .
  4. You know something ain't right when a pretty 30 year old woman have dated many men in her life is still single. Just sayin

      Oh haha sorry.

  6. I am very tired of people who always talk about school and research related stuff 24/7, it's like they completely lost the abilities to carry a normal conversation with normal people.

  7. thesis MS > non thesis MS a non-thesis Masters does not weight that much when you're trying to join a competitive lab, it might get you into a grad program but probably not your #1 lab. Most of top labs are extremely picky about their students. Personally, I prefer students who know how to write a thesis than someone with a bunch of coauthor papers.
  8. My goal is to get married before I turn 30. Please submit your application to my mailbox :-D

  10. Have any of you guys either currently dating, dated, or married to someone without a higher ed. degree? Could you please share your experience in term of how to keep the relationship interesting and what were some of the hardships you encountered? I told the person about my profession and the person got nervous all of the sudden because the person of interest only has a high school diploma. I made it very clear that I don't think having a higher ed. degree is required when it comes to dating and I'm always open to trying new things. However, most of the people I have dated were doctors, scientists or lawyers though.

I tried that, but instantly regretted it. A month later tried FFXIV :) best decision ever. Well, until grad school starts anyway :/

  14. So, person A and I hung out last night and it was fun, we did not talk about anything school/research related stuff

  17. PA is an alternative option. You should also know that PA is a US-only degree, there are currently no equivalent degrees in any other countries.
  18. person A and I are going to see a horror film this weekend >.> I'm just not gonna talk about research related stuff with person A ~
  19. It felt like I was giving a counseling session and being a life coach . person A gave me a short course on measure theory which was a bit, different, not a typical topic you would discuss at a restaurant It was just so awkward.
  20. "And if I fly, or if I fall Least I can say I gave it all And if I fly, or if I fall I'm on my way, I'm on my way"

  21. Let me make it very clear to you. The first person (person A) was a pure mathematician and the second one (person B was a bio-mathematician. I was not able to hold a decent conversation with person A mainly because there was no common ground, whereas for person B, it was much easier because there was a common ground. I supposed I should have made it more clear at the beginning. How should I approach person A more efficiently knowing that there is no common ground between each others?
  22. There aren't many good jobs for chemistry PhDs born in the 80s and 90s. Most of the available jobs are just contracting work, where you work for people range from 3 months ~ 12 months at a time. Your employer is not required to pay for your 401K and other benefits by law, because you are not "technically" their employee, you are just a contractor. I've met many people in the industry who are afraid to settle down and buy a house because they just don't know if they will need to relocate in a couple of years. In addition, most of bench work (hands-on stuff) are being outsourced oversea, people hire employees with a high school diploma to do their experiments and run the reactions. 23. So, long story short, I've been talking to two mathematicians recently (within 3 days, it just happened) and realized I was having a difficult time finding their research interesting...like......very little... like the whole measure theory stuff (pure math theorist) Anyways, do you guys have any pointers for dating mathematicians? like, what are the stuff they like to do in general? or just avoid talk about research at all..
  24. I thought I was a nerd until I met mathematicians... that's a whole new level of nerdiness >.>

  25. There are plenty of people with a PhD in chemistry and years of experience making less than 50K a year, especially those born in the 80s and 90s. You don't see any dentists with no experience making less than 90K a year.
