  1. Why did you apply for summer admission knowing the program doesn't start until August?
  2. I don't think this is true. Do you think it's okay to make your spouse and children to relocate every 2, 3 years because there are only short-term contract jobs available? and not be able to buy a house and settle down when you're in your 40s or even 50s?
  3. If you are in the US, then Dentistry > Chemistry why..? (1) financial and employment stability - In order to practice as a dentist you need a degree from an accredited school in US and pass the dentistry licensure exam before you can call yourself a "legit" dentist. There are laws and regulations that protect you. You do not get the same protections with a PhD. in chemistry and the job market is already saturated (compete with foreign PhDs), many people are being forced to switch career in their 30s and 40s. The job security is highly unstable and most likely will get worse. (2) more prestige
  4. If I could fire my students, I would fire about 75% of the total chemistry undergrads at my school.

On the bright side, they get weeded out eventually. That, or they shape up. I think...

I'm genuinely interested in why you chose a pay service when there are so many free ones - I always had good experiences meeting good people through OkC, but I've never used a pay site, so I can't compare.

  6. Would you sacrifice your future for your significant other (gf/bf/wife/husband)? Would you drop everything you worked so hard for (acceptance letters, fellowships, scholarships) to your number one school and knowing that this is the opportunity of a lifetime and there is a very high chance that you won't be able to come back to school in the future.
  7. Amazon sells Amazon brand of rechargeable batteries!? whatttttttt

  8. I think a thesis option would be better. You can always apply to dental schools and PhD schools with a thesis-based Masters. However, you couldn't do the same with a non-thesis-based Masters. I mean, it's not that you can't do it, but it would make you a less competitive applicant in comparison to other applicants with a thesis-based Masters...Unless you really luck out and are able to produce 1 first authored paper before you apply.
  9. Anyone is getting a fireTV? I couldn't decide if I want to get one or not because I already have a Chromecast and a Xbox360. The voice search feature is actually pretty awesome though, and you can play iOS games too.
  10. If you want to work right after college, then a foreign language would be the best option. Realistically, do you really think your future employer care if you wrote an undergrad honor thesis or not? Sure, you can always "pick up" a foreign language in the future, it's always easier said than done.
  11. Definitely foreign language! It would be pretty awesome to learn Arabic and get credits for it.
  12. Oh I know what you meant, it's so hard to have a normal conversation without mentioning my research or school related stuff... well, I supposed you could talk about sports or video games....
  13. I think it is division dependent. When I received my acceptance letter, the guy who signed the letter was my division chair, all the professors in my division are full professors (seriously, everyone is full, tenured, professors). One of the newly hired assistant professors at my school mentioned that he received, on average, about 30 emails/day regarding people wanting to join his group. Somehow, people from around the world found out he was recently hired, which was a bit kinda odd since his information wasn't even on the department website, nor the department made the announcement yet. Same thing happened to my PI, he also received crap load of emails and most of them were synthetic students...of course, our group have a bias against organic and polymer chemists .
  14. One of the undergrads from our lab who is a senior and graduating soon is taking 21 hrs credit hours this semester, while "working" in 4 different research groups (biology, chemistry, public health, and psychology) simultaneously. Recently (2 weeks ago), she took the GRE and applied to "one" Ph.D. program in Chemistry at my school. I secretly thought, "girl puhleaze, do you really think the admissions committee is really that ....clueless? If you truly want to get a Ph.D. in Chemistry you would apply to a WIDE range of programs and not just one, and would have submitted your applications back in November! Isn't it obvious that this is a last minute thing because you got rejected from all the med schools you applied to?" Not to mention, she is having more Cs than As in chemistry classes....man, someone is truly delusional.
  15. There are barely any fellowships/scholarships for middle class Caucasian men in science, unless they're military vet, disable or gay. =.=

I am not a white male, but I thought it was wrong to discriminate a group of people solely on their race and gender. I know some of my colleagues' parents pretty much living paycheck by paycheck and yet still be considered as "middle class" before the amount of money they are making is above the poverty line.

I'm a white male, first generation student and you pretty much have described my life lol. Parents live paycheck to paycheck, not an extravagant life style. I pretty much say these words more than once a year when trying to find funding for collge "Why did we have to be white?"...because its true there are opportunities specifically for white males. Anywho, yay for higher education and the sciences!

FYI, if you have a Masters, you're ineligible for most of the funding sources that have been listed here since you've got right at or more than 2 years graduate experience. There aren't a ton of funding opportunities for rural, Caucasian females, either... and especially not the ones that have a MS. However, I've noticed a couple of local fellowships that don't ask for race or gender, which is awesome. I understand why some fellowships are specific, but it is cool to have...

  16. I know a few premed students who are heterosexual white male took a Women Studies course as part of their liberal art pre-req. I would have taken a Men Studies course if it was offered at my UG You can get a degree in Men's Studies too... http://www.hws.edu/academics/mens/faculty.aspx
  17. Some schools offer MS degree in patent law, you can become licensed patent law specialist with a MS degree. My school offers a 1-year long accelerated MBA degree...
  18. Definitely funding > prestige rule of thumb, don't go to grad school unless you're funded.
  19. maybe opening up a fast food franchise or a bakery....
  20. What would you do if you couldn't find a job after graduation and refuse to become one of the permanent postdocs..? http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn25281-stem-cell-scientists-reveal-unethical-work-pressures.html#.UzVtIPldXNk http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2014/03/inquiring-minds-ethan-perlstein-postdocalypse
  21. I was at a job fair for chemists last month and talked to some recruiters. Many of them mentioned that they only hire chemists with a BS or a MS degree, and some prefer people with a high school diploma. One of the guys I talked to told me that they used to have a PhD organic chemist at his company but they fired him because he was too difficult to work with, and too "expensive" .

  23. It would be very hard to track down the disappeared members I think... some professors only list the former students that landed a job on their page which is a bit ....deceiving ..
