  1. I'm applying to them (my research is in forensics)!
  2. Awesome, thanks so much! I was able to access the application ok on Safari last year but Internet Explorer worked (although it hurt to use it)!
  3. I would apply to any kind of government council funding that you can. I'm not sure what's available in the US, but in Canada almost everyone applies to Tri-Council (SSHRC/CIHR/NSERC) and OGS (if in Ontario). I would take a gander up to the funding section to see what's available.
  4. Is anyone else having problems with SFU's application? I've been wanting to start my application for over a week yet it doesn't seem compatible with any browser I use.
  5. I think it definitely would reflect well on you if you had some ideas on projects you could be doing while working with him, even if it's not your main interest in research. It shows that you have some level of enthusiasm for the work he and his lab does. Good luck with the meeting!
  6. I say that I only had one because the first year I applied, my friend, who at the time had a 4.0 GPA, crazy research experience, and several publications, got rejected from all 10 schools she applied to without interviews. It really is a random process that depends on several factors, such as who else is applying with you and where you stack up in comparison to them and whether a prof is interested in working with you. Department politics also play a big part, where well qualified candidates with a willing supervisor get rejected because the supervisor has too much/too little funding or because the department deems that another prof should have priority in accepting students. I think if you're applying to something like counselling, you can get away with less research experience.
  7. I'm a bit of an anomaly since I'm applying to clinical psych PhD programs with an MA in experimental psych under my belt, so it's expected that I'll have more research experience than someone applying out of their undergrad. I have 3 conference presentations (2 poster, 1 paper, all first author) and one first-author publication. I have 2 more first-authors pubs that have been submitted, and 2 other papers in preparation. When I was applying to these programs out of undergrad, I only had the one submitted first author publication, as well as a few years of RA experience (mostly just data collection). I got interviews at 3 out of the programs I applied to. I think a lot of it comes down to 1) how you can spin what experience you have, and 2) how that experience stands up to the rest of the folks in the same application cycle. These things do vary from year to year.
  8. Thanks for starting the thread! I hope you enjoy your program. The first month of the program can be very overwhelming, but it gets much better! Where is everything thinking of applying to?
  9. My thesis defence is in less than 10 days and my advisor still won't respond to my questions about it. I feel like I'm being thrown to the wolves.
  10. It's always worth a shot emailing them to see if they'd consider your application because you have tri-council funding. Likely they'll say no, but I did this and that's how I got into my current grad program after having been previously rejected from it (back in the old days of the CGS-M where you could take it to any school you wanted).
  11. To be honest, from what I've been hearing from a bunch of my mentors, the process for getting into clinical programs in Canada is random and department politics play a huge role in who they can accept for a cycle (see: the discussion on Ryerson in the Canadian applicants thread). The only thing I would focus on is getting more publications and possibly finding better reference letters (although just because they're hard on you doesn't mean that they didn't write good letters). Applying to more schools, including those in the US, should help as well, especially if your research interests are more broad. Your GPA and GRE scores are competitive so I wouldn't worry about those.
  12. They've apparently already done the interviews for the clinical program, according to another poster.
  13. When I got accepted into my MA program (the one I'm currently finishing), I was at home off of work for the day because the city was in a state of emergency (cool story bro).

    FERPA

I don't know much about how this stuff works in the US (I only have a basic knowledge of FERPA), but this doesn't sound ethical to me? I would assume that something like mental health records would be protected information. It sounds super shady, and would definitely discourage me from ever seeking health services on a university campus if I lived in the US (and I say this as someone who is considering grad school in the US).
  15. Official rejection from UWO today
  16. Ah damn. This has not been a great cycle for me.... Good luck to your friends though! I know someone in their program and she loves it!
  17. Was this for the clinical program?
  18. Has anyone heard anything from Saskatchewan yet? I'm super tempted to email the graduate assistant and ask what's with the long wait.
  19. My dermatologist prescribed me a face cream that evidently is not supposed to be prescribed to someone with my particular medical condition, and now I've been thrown out of the year-long remission I've so carefully maintained into a flare. I am not impressed.
  20. I've waited a week to several weeks after the interview to hear back.
  21. Definitely try an interlibrary loan. Most interlibrary loans these days just send you a PDF scan of the article anyways.
  22. I live in a 350 square foot studio that's within walking distance from campus and I love being so close, especially since transit is awful where I live. I spend a lot of time at home since I usually work from home most days, and I practically spent the first 3 months of grad school working from bed since I was so sick. It does kind of suck having no separate bedroom (I also hate the lack of space), but the convenience of the location makes up for it.
  23. They do interviews for the clinical program (or at least they did when I applied two years ago).
  24. I've heard nothing from Saskatchewan. I'm starting to get worried.
