2013-2014 M.A./M.T.S/M.Div Application chitchat
toby42 replied to Therewillbeluke's topic in Religion
While the above post is what was told me through our phone conversation, I received another email saying "We have already made our offers of admission and contacted those on the waitlist. However, we have not sent out official letters declining admission until we have set our class; but we do not expect to have to go beyond those already contacted." So I called them and they said that yes, they have already contacted those accepted and those on the waitlist. ... -

Ok... so the word is that we should hear 'sometime in the next week.' Not too specific at all, but I didn't want to be too much of a nuisance. But in our conversation (which centered on something else, so this was a bit ancillary), I gathered that it seems they are still arduously reviewing the applications. On a side note (and I don't think I know of anyone else who applied to it), the MA in ECS decisions have been made and are being sent out as we speak. -
I don't know if it will be the main focus of my studies, but early Christian history (1st-5th centuries) will definitely be a large part of whatever I do. It might even become my main focus, I don't know. At this point, my main emphasis is biblical/textual studies, but in my opinion this must include an in-depth knowledge of the social and religious contexts in which the text was written. The period after its writing and dissemination is also highly important as it gives insight into what the earliest texts looked like and how they were interpreted (hence my interest in Patristics). For me, early Christian history is an essential part of understanding scripture. Heck, it's an essential part of pretty much anything we do - be it history, theology, textual, etc. With this, I am also greatly intersted in the period of Jewish history (social, religious focus) from 150 BC - 70AD, and for the same reasons - the Jewish context in which Christ came and the NT was written is a vital part of understanding scripture. For this reason, my plan is to continue on toward my Ph.D. in Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity... So yeah... I <3 history.

To let ya'll know, I'll be bugging them tomorrow. I have an excuse, so I will also 'happen' to see what I can find out about timing of MTS decisions. -
They were open today? FWIW, I was writing to say, 'go for it!' along with the plethora of other positives...

I have a new biggest regret... and am just sick about it. After poring over the requirements for the application materials thoroughly before submitting my application, I just found something that may be a requirement that I did not fulfill. After sending an email regarding applications a minute ago, I received back an email that had a host of FAQs, one of which stated that if we had transfered credits from a smaller school to our baccalaureate institution, then we needed to have transcripts sent from the previous school as well. I did not see this anywhere on the application and did not even think of including my long-past time at junior college on the app. On the online app, for 'Institutions' it first had a section for the BA institution, then a Graduate Institution, then two 'Other Institution's. Following right after 'Grad Inst.', I thought these were for other institutions of higher learning... I never even thought about jr. college from 10 years ago. OMG... This was a tremendous oversight on my part and I am extremely fearful it may jeopardize the entire process that I put so much hard work into. Discovering this now - at the point of decisions probably having been already made - is gut-wrenching. Fortunately, decisions haven't been mailed yet, so I just sent an email to the programs I applied to alerting them to the fact that I just discovered this, asking if there's anyway I can rectify it. But sheesh, it's cutting it close. AUUUGH...

See, I saw the same thing, too... so on the 4th or 5th, I started getting real antsy, thinking the 8th 'might be it.' Then the 8th came and went, and I thought, 'Well, maybe Monday.' Then Monday came and went... then I was rooting for 'the second Thursday of the month'... and here we are. I've been obssessing about for the last week, so you know what? Forget it. The 22nd is my new 'expected deadline.' ...Gosh, I hope we hear tomorrow... -

I looked through the old M* Acceptance threads from years past (yeah, I've gotten a bit OCD about this) and sometimes they didn't hear until the 19th, sometimes the 22nd. Next Friday is the 22nd, so in order to put this out of my mind for a while so I can actually get some things done, I pushed it back to that date. Same way that when I have $50 in the account, I tell myself I have $30. Just to give a safe window. Mind games on my mind, man... I must. btw, I think technically their 'latest deadline' is the end of March. If I recall, that's what their website technically said... though it's almost always before then, I think. -

I've just resigned myself to not count on a decision before the 22nd. I'll tell myself not to expect it until then... and if it comes early, great. If not, no disappointment. Either way, I'm not gonna sweat it anymore. I can't afford to. Yeah... sometimes I have to play mind games with my mind. Get it to shut up for a while... -

Got to my new grad school and now having strong regrets...

I'd be interested to know what ended up happening. Being that her OP was her only post, I doubt we hear. But closure would be nice! -
Mid-March is only two days away! Remember the adage: Beware the Ides of March.

I wasn't losing my mind until recently. I did a fairly good job, I think, of just letting the time go by and being content with waiting. But enough is enough! lol... I haven't been able to get anything done in the last few days, can't focus on anything else. *Sigh*. So yeah, i'm startin' to...

Oh, man... someone just posted a wait-list status for the ND MA in ECS... I haven't heard anything yet for my app, though. What does it MEAN?! *Hands raised to the sky for dramatic effect* -
Grumpy Cat is out. Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina is the new Pope. He will be known as "Pope Francis 1".

Wow, great suggestions, thank you. I'll probably couple your first suggestion with jdm's and look at working with Dr. Ulrich if accepted to ND. He specializes in OT/DSS/LXX, but that's an area that I'm lacking in, so it would be perfect. I've done a lot with the NT already, particularly through Metzger's works... which makes working with Ehrman an interesting idea! But thanks for the other ideas; I'm going to have to look around at the schools you suggested as well. p.s... sorry for the hijack, all. Unintended. /done
