Could you provide details? Who contacted you?

Yes, it was a call from Rusty Jones (who is the DGA this year). I was told that I've been accepted to the PhD program and that a formal letter will follow soon.

Does anyone know when's San Diego sending decisions? They are late (very) compared to previous years.

UCSD or SDSU?  Waiting on UCSD.

As of last week a professor of mine who knows people there on the admission's committee said that they are still deliberating, and he wasn't given a prospective date for when they might be done. I don't know what exactly that is supposed to tell any of us, but at least it's information...

Thanks to whoever declined their offer from Madison, I just received an offer from the waitlist.

This brings me to 5:

University of Illinois at Chicago
University of Rochester
University of Iowa
Boston College
University of Wisconsin, Madison

I hope to get the list down to 2 by next Friday, so if you're waiting, there's hope.

Nice, congrats! I'm really hoping to get off the waitlist at Madison as well. It's very encouraging to hear that they're already making offers to people on their waitlist.

Congrats!! Did you hear back via post or email from BC? I thought they used post :(

Has anyone else heard back from Boston college?

I'll try. I actually think University of Iowa is the best fit for me out of all the schools I applied to (20), so, I'm not sure if I'll be declining them at all. However, if I do, I'll tell them to only give my offer to comrade Bookchin. :D

They do! I think they just emailed me because I recently had an interview. They said the official stuff (including financial details) would be in the post.

Ah! So they did interviews! I didn't know they did them. Damn! Thanks

Interviews at BC? When? Some people had their offers on February 1 and there was no mention of interviews on the results page, nor was there likely enough time before that release for interviews to have had to occur (considering the notifications came by postal service and were obviously mailed prior to the 1st). Maybe they are interviewing one-by-one, because it seems if there was a large interview pool, we would have seen it on the results page.

Looks like MIT has already sent out acceptance and wait-list mails, so rejections will probably be sent tomorrow.

Oh joy, that sounds like a fun Friday...

Well, better to get a straight rejection than an implicit one.

Yale hasn't sent out emails about this yet, but it looks like rejections have now been posted to their website. I had one waiting for me just now on the Yale website.

Also, has anyone else who applied to UCLA still not received a decision? Several people have reported getting rejections from UCLA today, but I still have no sign of an email and there's no decision for me on the application website.

I’m sorry to hear about the denial. I’m equally sorry to hear that that’s how you found out. Seems genuinely rude to forgo reaching out with the decision.

Bon courage!

Hardly distinguishes it from the rest of this awful, humiliating process.

I had rejections from both Yale and UCLA waiting for me this morning. I expected the Yale rejection, but the UCLA letter stung a little.

Maybe your letter just isn't posted yet, or maybe you're on a waitlist. Someone was saying earlier this week that they haven't notified their waitlist yet, so that could be a good sign. Have to wait and see.

I was checking this forum since early January. I have been rejected from Michigan and Berkeley explicitly and from Pittsburgh implicitly. Still waiting for two more PhD programs ( Austin and North Carolina) and four masters ( Oxford BPhil, Toronto, CUNY and Tufts).

I am losing the confidence that I will end up somewhere. It is an awful feeling to love something and not being able to practice it.

Thanks for your kind words! I was kind of expecting a rejection from them anyway, so I'm not all that upset about it, but nice replies like this really help too.

I'm going to try not to get my hopes up, since it seems very possible that a rejection letter will go up later today, but a waitlist from UCLA would be fantastic. Fingers crossed!

This would mean a lot more coming from someone who had to do it and was fine, but you may need to try again next year, or whenever it is feasible for you to try again. That would also give you time to strengthen your preparation as a scholar, get better GRE scores, improve or write a better writing sample, and whatever else you can do to make yourself more appealing (on paper).

Unfortunately, all they have is what's visible on paper, based on very  inconsistent measurements, and sometimes very good people don't get an acceptance. You may also consider widening your search a bit; there are excellent programs that don't look that way in the PGR, but their graduates are happy and get good jobs.

In short: don't lose hope, but getting shut out is not the end of the world, not even close.

The problem of trying again the next year is that of being outside of an institution. No recommender would evaluate your recent work in philosophy and you become alienated from the whole discipline.
