I don't think you should pass on a great PhD offer for a MA one, unless you have some very specific reasons. I don't know if that's your situation, but great PhD offers are hard to come by so I'd hold on to it. Good luck.

Hi everyone! I am split between choosing the MAPH Program at UChicago (with partial scholarship) vs the Arts and Museum Studies Program at Georgetown (no funding). I am trying to gather as much as information to make a decision. Does anyone have any knowledge in either departments that are perhaps not listed on the main websites? Maybe personal experiences/experiences of friends? Any input will be deeply appreciated....Thank you!

Is anyone else beyond pissed after hearing the news today about the admissions scandal? As if the higher ed deck isn’t stacked against the middle class and working poor enough! I can’t imagine the opportunities I would have had had I not had to work ft through school, let alone if I had rich parents. ?

Hi everyone, I was admitted to BostonU's MA pogram. It would be a great fit for me since I am specilizing in Roman art. Yet the incredibly expensive tuition and living expenses in Boston are really discouraging, and at this moment I do not have a better offer. What do you guys think? And anyone knows something in detail (like, if the professors there are helpful or not)? I would appreciate if you could PM me. Thanks a lot!

I wouldn't recommend anyone, unless you're rich or have external funding, to pursue an unfunded MA program... Especially if there are some amazing fully-funded MA programs available out there. If your ultimate goal is to pursue a PhD, take a year off, read, improve your application materials, take graduate-level courses at a nearby institution, work on your language skills... There are so many people I know that benefit from such a decision, and are accepted to fully funded PhDs next season. Given the precarious job situation, we shouldn't fall into years debt for a graduate program in the humanities.

Hi all! I've been accepted to Toronto, SUNY Stony Brook, UT Austin and Hunter for an MA and I'm struggling to make my decisions. Pretty sure I'm going to turn down Toronto and Stony Brook, but I can't choose between Austin and Hunter!! Interested in modern/contemporary. I really want to get a feel for how the reputations of Austin and Hunter stack up against each other. Does anyone have any insight about this?? Thanks!!

Hi I am an undergrad at BU in art history and it is an amazing department, especially the Roman art specialist Fred Kleiner. He is a really well renown scholar and also one of my favorite professors/people in the department. All the grad students I've seen seem to be happy studying at BU and definitely have a really strong community amongst themselves. That said, Boston and BU especially is definitely an expensive place, although you can find cheap housing in Alston or Brighton, relatively close to BU's campus. You can message me if you want me to elaborate on anything.

I don't know much about their reputations exactly, but I would go for Hunter. NYC is the best place to be for modern and contemporary (museums, center of art world) and I know that the CUNY schools are excellent for this specialty. I remember hearing last year about UT Austin getting rid of or reducing their arts library, so that may be something to keep in mind as well.

You are right. My only concern on accepting this offer is the cost. There is no such institution in my country that can provide professional training on Art History, so a gap year and reappying may not be a wise choice for me either. I guess I'll just keep waiting for a while to see the results of other schools. Could go to a public school in the end.

I applied to UT Austin's PhD program without a Master's degree and was evidently accepted to the program. However, according to their website, it says that one must hold a Master's in order to apply to the PhD. Either this is a new stipulation or I must've overlooked this when applying. Any thoughts?

I would recommend contacting the department about this. It may be the case that they misunderstood your application, which would make for an awkward and difficult first semester.

I don't see how the department could have overlooked that you don't have a MA; they would have looked at your transcripts, writings, etc. It seems more probable that the info on the website is wrong. But yes, definitely contact the department as soon as you can! Good luck!

I see that some rejections from Penn have gone out to PhD applicants, but have any MA applicants heard anything? I've heard mostly negative things about their MA program, but I'd still like to know if I've been accepted/rejected.
