Well that gives me hope. I'm in the first year going into second, but second year applying. Hopefully next year...

I have had 2 friends (film studies) who got the award in their 4th year, less money but it is doable and possible.

Just got my letter; didn't get the funded either ? It appeared under the "Visualiser" section. Second year applying.

Thank you so much :) My applications have definitely gotten better over the years. And every year I learn what to recalibrate, like you said, a little tweak here and there. One day it'll be enough and things wont be hard financially.

Can I ask what year of your PhD you (and others who got funded) are in?

I’m in the first year of my PhD, second time applying.

Based on your profile, it looks like you’re in psych too. Would your research fit with FRQS? I’ve heard of people getting turned down by FRQSC, and then getting very highly ranked by FRQS the next year. Could be that they’re less weirdly picky than FRQSC? But that’s all anecdotal obviously

Didn't get the award, was ranked 4/9 and top 3 got the award in my committee (8B). Tough lose.

Compétences (70) : 58,55
Intentions de recherche (30) : 22,00
Total : 80,55 %

I was lucky enough to get SSHRC and OGS though. Still kinda sad about this one.

Wow, I got my letter and actually scored lower than last year. Yet this year I was ranked like 5 spots higher in my committee. Just goes to show that it really comes down to the other applicants in your committee.

Just got my letter. I can not believe this. I was ranked 1st in Visual Arts (12A). What...? I DID NOT EXPECT THIS AT ALL......

Here is the break down:

Compétences (50) : 44,50

Projet de recherche (50) : 43,60

Total : 88,10 %

shocked and SO GRATEFUL. Don't give up friends, I am in my third year.

I was ranked 8th out of 23 in my committee and there were 6 awards available. Really too bad that FRQSC does not have second or third rounds if someone rejects their award. It seems like quite a few of us might get funded if that was the case.

You will get through it and it will be great at the end. I am in my third year at Concordia's Huma department and my committee was Visual Arts.

Me too! Except not visual arts. And congratulations! I'm so happy that you got it!

I received my letter and didn't get it either. I was ranked 5 and they gave out 3 awards. I'm in third year.  Fingers crossed for SSHRC!

It’s really unfair. The acceptance letter says that we *have* to turn down FRQSC if we get sshrc as well (i.e. there’s no option to choose FRQSC instead) so it’s like their main worry is saving money. And then they go on to talk about the importance of supporting young researchers...

I truly believe there should be a petition to FRQSC for having waitlist. It just does not make any sense. SSHRC has it, why not FRQSC? it is simply unfair.

Political Science, I think it was committee 6. I don't remember. It's somewhat expected as I changed my major in second year from political science to education and then September, I went back to political science with my original supervisor (and not a clear plan on what I was doing).  My supervisor said my proposal was definitely strong, but I also think that the switching back and forth has affected the relevant experience since I had a year away from political science.  Experience was my lower score. However, this was my highest ranking so far!

Agreed... I don't understand where that money goes...

Where do you see the number of awards given per committee ? I can only see my ranking

I actually think anyone who is ranked one or two below the award limit should start a letter and petition and circulate it around. Many folks get Vanier or SSHRC. They decline the award, thus, where is that money??

It's in the letter part that says they could only awards to so many people. It's not in the section with our ranking.

Yes, I agree. I will talk about this with my supervisor and see what he thinks and whether he knows what might be behind the lack of extra rounds. It seems extremely weird. I was lucky enough to just receive a SSHRC but for those who don't extra rounds could be such lifesavers.

Congrats!! That's great.

I got almost the same score (88%) but didn't get it- there must be a lot of variation between committees?

Don't ever loose hope and keep trying. Best of luck for your future applications. I just got my letter a few minutes ago. I'm in my 1st year, going into 2nd. It was my 1st time applying but I worked on my application for MONTHS and got a dozen of people read it. I got a bit discouraged since my SSHRC didn't pass the departmental nominations (since quota) but I didn't loose hope and really tried for FRQSC. I edited and rewrote it soooo many times. Put in a lot of work in your application and get as much feedback as you can. I think this is the main thing that helped me get it on my 1st try. I'm so blessed and grateful. I wish you all success. Cheers.

Nice!!! That is great. I just got mine too. I was ranked 4 out of 19 in -( Pédagogie / Formation / Systèmes d'éducation)

I wonder what the cut of was though. Is it possible to tell from the letter somehow?

Compétences (50) : 40,17

Projet de recherche (50) : 45,83

Total : 86,00 %

From previous years comparison, it changes drastically between committees and the number of candidates in the pool. Your committee must have been ranked higher in the spectrum so the way they ranked the media it must have been higher? Im an artist so math is not my prime :))
