Anyone else compulsively check their portals today?

YES. Just four days after I could finally stop checking them every day to see if all the LORs and transcripts had been received. Everything's now complete....and pending. ? I'll be with you in spirit every time you check yours.

No, but I'm compulsively consulting the I Ching to use divination to determine whether or not I will get accepted this year! Here's part of the reading I just got:

"In his large and splendid house, no friends or family dwell.
He sees no one pass through his gate for three years.
Misfortune."

The "three years" part has me feeling hopeful, but the rest sounds pretty dismal hahaha.

Dear god, if you were near me I’d just give you a tarot card reading with one of my favorite decks. Just got two new ones: Cthulhu deck, and Women of Science deck.

Perhaps we'll both end up at Michener or UF, and we can make that a reality in the fall! :)

If we both end up at Michener I’ll happy cry so hard. My big worry is not knowing anybody wherever I go to school (whenever that happens of course).

I think Michener has replaced Iowa as my number-one, so hopefully all three of us can happily bask under the Texan sun.

I love being warm, which makes Minnesota’s weather much less appealing. Texas would be awesome. Iowa’s cool (cold actually) but three year programs stole my heart this round.

Same here. Oregon State is the only two year program to which I applied. I'd be glad to go there, but the couple of thesis ideas that I am knocking around are already ambitious for a three year timeline, so I would definitely need to rethink things if that's the route I take.

I love that there are other people open to metaphysical things on here! I'm actually a professional tarot card reader and have dabbled in the I-ching a bit. I only read for myself once every three months or so and I tend to focus on personal development and the creative unconscious  rather than divination. Still hasn't stopped me from drawing a card here and there lately tho ;)

I don't know about you guys, but I'm going absolutely crazy refreshing my email. It'd be easier to deal with if it weren't for the pandemic. I just wanna take a trip someplace and forget about apps for a minute!!!

God, I love Oregon. So beautiful, even in the winter. I live in a northern state, but I get the Canada wind and snow which is so much worse than rain. Only reason I didn’t apply to Oregon State is the teaching load versus the compensation for it. I’m good. And I have one idea that I was leaning towards last year, but I know it would be a ton of work and travel to Germany to finish.

I’m Wiccan, but I’m definitely not a crystal person or spell-casting person. I just really love tarot cards and carving wands myself.

Last year I went crazy with tarot readings, so I’ve told myself to calm it down to once a month for application season.

The pandemic is seriously throwing off my expectations for wait times. And I really want to go somewhere nice, but once again, pandemic.

Yeah it can be an addiction during times of anxiety hahah. It's more meaningful when you wait between readings tho, I think : ) I also really like using the cards for writing prompts, which is a fun non-divination way to use them!

And I hear ya about expectations being thrown... I finally took a look at grad school results to get an idea of when we might hear back from certain programs, but I realize now that this year is probably going to look very different, and setting expectations might only lead to further feelings of chaos!!!

Me toooo. Last night I purposely unplugged for six hours--turned my phone and computer off completely, played a game with my kiddo, watched West Wing, ate popcorn, sipped some whiskey--and it was so relaxing. I didn't realize how much I needed it. And when the six hours were up and I hurried to turn on my phone, the only new email was a New Yorker newsletter. So think of how many times I would have compulsively checked my email during that time just to be disappointed.

Off topic question - do you have a set that you recommend for getting into tarot cards? mostly to entertain and investigate the self. thanks in advance!

Whew do I feel this! I have been pulling a card every day from my Rider-Waite-Smith and reflecting on it. Lots of pentacles and swords, i.e. manifestation and choice!

That sounds so nice! I just ordered some take out and I'm sipping on some Soju. I thought I'd check this forum one more time, but after this I'm going to try and get some reading done or maybe watch a movie. It's so important to remember to unplug now and then

That's awesome that you want to learn more about tarot! I think it's great to pick out a deck that you vibe with, but starting with the Rider Waite is usually a good idea because it's "standard" and will allow you to get acquainted with the archetypes and symbols. There are a lot of artists creating amazing decks nowadays, but unless you're already familiar with some of the symbols I think it's not necessarily the best way to learn. Plus, if you get the Rider Waite first you can use websites like this to help you interpret a 10 card spread when you're getting started: https://crystal-reflections.com/tarot3/  Which can be helpful/interesting as you experiment!

I've been getting lots of swords and pentacles, too! And Death/The Tower/The Star for the past 6 months

Hi all!! I'm Mary--so nice to meet everybody! :D I'm so glad this little corner of Grad Cafe exists--I randomly found Grad Cafe through an article I read online about when to expect an answer to grad program applications, and I'm so glad it directed me here. This website is absolutely bomb. :D

I ended up making a last-minute decision to apply to an MFA for Creative Writing via a whole lot of Jesus and prayer and finally having the courage to go after making my novel that I've been working on since I was 14 my MFA. I only applied to one program, Notre Dame's MFA for their prose track, and I applied there because my novel takes place during the Great Potato Famine in Ireland, and they have an absolutely fantastic Irish Studies program, as well as a service component to their program, which is also really important to me as both a writer and human. (I really want to get involved with their outreach track that deals with the Literatures of Annihilation and Exile (I can't remember the exact name of the track off the top of my head) because I want to use my words to help amplify the voices of marginalized communities and to write about issues in the education and social justice spaces; BIPOC issues and immigrant/refugee issues are very, very close to my heart.)

Between making the decision to apply and the deadline for the program, I had a ten-day turnaround period, and I still can't believe I actually applied to the program. That's kind of wild to me. I wish I'd had a better writing sample, but I'm just really proud of myself for applying in the first place, and for the fact that I wrote the first four pages of my novel in a creative whirlwind on the day of submission, and it was pretty much the best feeling ever to give voice to my main character, who has been in my heart and grown and matured with me through the past 15 years (I'm 29 now), and know that I have something special there.

I just wanted to wish everybody the best of luck with their applications and the decisions, and I look forward to getting to know everyone!! I think I'm going to cry and dance at the same time if I get in to this program--I want it more with each passing day.

God bless, everybody! So so glad I found this place!

~Mary

Ah that's so cool! Have you heard anything yet?

Also, super nice to meet you! :)Haha this is so much fun seeing other applicants and having commiseration and collaboration buddies!

This forum is a godsend for sure! It's nice to know everyone is basically feeling the same way.

I haven't heard anything yet, but the deadline was 15 days ago, so I imagine it'll be one of the later notifications.
