NSERC PGS D 2022-2023

I do think they take into consideration the year with which you are applying; first year might not expect that much output? 

Also I don't think one extra year gives that much time for significant output either but thats just my opinion. Esp when most people are at the coursework / quals stage in the first year to have that much time dedicated to research.

I agree. 50% of the application is research ability AND potential. I put a lot of time into my application to try and show the potential since I didn't have any first author papers at the time.

Yeah this is true. I mean if I don't get it I'll be reapplying and still without any first-author papers, so.

Has anyone here also applied to SSHRC? I'm in a really interdisciplinary program (even if I'm Bio department) so we actually had to decide which tri-council to apply for?

And people who have transferred directly from MSc! I'm in a weird position where this is my third year (entered as an MSc) but technically my first as a PhD candidate (passed quals last spring), even though the cumulative degree timeline from entry is hopefully only 4 years...

I haven't, but I've heard it's less competitive from a professor that does more work in the social sciences.  That was in 2019 that she said that, not sure how true it is but she seemed convinced the SSHRC was under applied for.

I got this too, but then it says "If you do not receive an email from NSERC *this week*, please contact NSERC to confirm your current email address on file." So I am questioning if we will even get the results today.

I think this is to cover for cases where NSERC has incorrect applicant emails registered. This happened to some people last year and it took a bit longer for them to get their results.

I got the impression that it's harder to get if you're not in a social sciences department? Either way, if NSERC doesn't work this year we might try to SSHRC next time.

Interesting, I've only received an email from the graduate award office from when they forwarded my application.

I wouldn't count on us all receiving an e-mail at 5pm, yesterday I believe the SSHRC started sending them out around 530 and they just trickled in until 9pm-ish when most people had received it. Obviously, could be different and maybe we will be lucky but best to keep expectations low when dealing with NSERC! The e-mail someone else posted earlier also said "the results will be uploaded after 5pm" so that's pretty vague.

I think worrying about this scholarship may have taken more time away from my research, cumulatively, than studying for my comp exam. How are we supposed to be productive under these conditions! Lol

I still havent gotten the "result will be available after 5pm EST" email ... T_T

I just heard from UWaterloo. It says NSERC released results and notified them (UW) that my application was successful and "NSERC will make individual notifications available via the secure site on April 26 to all applicants. This will include instructions on how to activate your award"
 

Best of luck to those waiting! This was my second year applying. And don't validate yourself based on one external award  getting past the institutional level is a huge accomplishment, too!

Chemistry, I believe it does not matter though cuz it is the same graduate award office!
