FQRSC results are up, for MA at least.

I scored 88% (17.5 on 20) and only ranked 7th out of the 11 applications before my committee. They gave out 3 this round, so I didn't get one and I doubt that they will make it down to no. 7 on the second or third rounds. Seems like I was up against some ridiculously stiff competition.

I changed my topic between applying for SSHRC and FQRSC, and I think my SSHRC application was much stronger, and I got referred to the national competition, so I am not completely discouraged. That said, it is a little disappointing and, not having heard from SSHRC yet, it would have been nice to have something else guaranteed. Oh well, moving on.

It's a different game, most people at my department don't get FQRSC but get SSHRC.

Okay, so far people from Ontario, Quebec and the US have received letters. Congrats to you all! (Especially those who get to choose between the two types of SSHRC -- that's awesome. Although, I still think you should be able to take either SSHRC outside of Canada.)

Anyways, has anyone received anything from BC to Manitoba? Or in the Maritimes?

Post if you you have, please! :)

I wonder if all of the letters went out at exactly the same time...

Congratulations to all you successful applicants :)

I was selected by my university (one of the 20/42 applicants) to continue on in the national competition, and am now anxiously awaiting the results. Wish they would just come already!

Well, I think many in my dpmt (law) have FQRSC, especially given that Quebec law is unique in Canada. But hopefully you are right about it being different and I really do think that my SSHRC application was way better.

sorry about the news rmckinnon. hope that you are still eligible to apply for next year. i still don't know my results but in applying the first year I ranked 72 in the university and 47 applicants were sent forward. I was so disappointed. This year in the university I ranked 19 out of the 47 applications sent forward by the university (and even though these intra-uni rankings don't go forward to SSHRC - it does indicate that quite a lot can change in a year). Regardless of the results, I worked incredibly hard and learned a great deal through the process. Best of luck to you next year.

Unsuccessful: 11.8/30. Had higher hopes.

Decaf, how did you find out your intra-uni ranking? For some reason I thought universities didn't give out this info

Does anyone know why we are only seeing CGS results (with the exception of those in C category)? What's happening with the four year awards?

Posted

I've been lurking in this forum because of a technical glitch which wouldn't let me post. Finally fixed it now. I got a four-year award in Toronto today. Letter dated April 21 and am extremely happy to have it. The tension in my shoulders is half what it was yesterday. So, good luck to everyone and wish me luck trying to get into an institution now! (I got turned down the one place I applied and now have to negotiate the next stage of the process.

Mine wasn't a CGS

Yes, I received mine yesterday, in Edmonton. I was very surprised to have it so soon. It was a rejection, so maybe no news yet is good news for you...?

Very good observation. Either it is sociological (more insecure top scorers here and silent Bs) or technical (they were not mailed on the same day).

Okay thanks Dramanda and congratulations! I was wondering if maybe there was another batch of good news letters that hadn't been sent out yet...but it sounds like all the results are out.

Thanks, but it was my last shot (going into 4th year).

Hi retirw- I emailed Grad Studies at our university each year (just after the internal university adjudication process) and they provided me with the information. I was also given my internal department ranking, which is the only one that goes forward to SSHRC - and scored 1 out of (only) 4 applicants within the department. Hope this helps. Not sure about your uni but mine seems fine with providing this - but you have to ask for the information.

Yes, I did the same with my university as an undergrad applying for an MA sshrc. I was given my ranking in the department, and also my actual scores from the university's internal sshrc committee (very interesting, as there was a big scoring range). Definitely worth asking.

I just received an e-mail for Ph. D FQRSC. Declined FQRSC, Cat A SSHRC Ph. D...

It confirms what I said earlier about FQRSC vs. CRSH in communication.

I fell upon this forum last week when I was wondering about letters from SSHRC. Thanks to those who posted info about the letters being sent out last week.

I figured rather than just lurking, I'd let folks know that I recieved a SSHRC fellowship for 2 years (I'm in my 2nd year PhD - Educational Studies right now). My score was 19.9/30 and I'm in northern Ontario. I was one of 6 PhD applicants forwarded from the University.

I have never applied for or received OGS or SSHRC in the past

SSHRC results are in Winnipeg! :D

My grad chair actually found out before I did. Apparently schools have access to a secure online site where they can go to view results. She received an email about an hour ago telling her to check the site and my result was on there.

After she told me, my partner checked the mail and the letter was there. So either way I would have found out today.

I won the CGS ($35K) SSHRC award. I was one of 2 students in our school to be forwarded and was the only one successful (it's a small uni).

Stats for the curious:

- First time applying (I'm currently finishing a 1-year MA)

- Received SSHRC MA funding

- Have no publications

- Had no conference history at the time I applied, though I do now (still, only 3-4 by the time I start my PhD)

- My score was 21.7/30

Living in Toronto.

Did not get the SSHRC. I assumed I wouldn't get it but I didn't think my score would be so low.

- I was applying for a 1st year PhD

- was passed on from my university

- I was ineligible to even apply for the OGS/SSHRC for my MA because of my undergrad grades - what weight do these have still?

- at the time of application I only had two national conference panels with a professor and no adjudicated awards or published papers (all of which I have beefed up substantially since then)

- 4.56 MA GPA

- although I had one letter from a very high-ranked professor, my other two letters were from a non-tenured supervisor and another Associate Prof who I believe wrote a glowing letter, but probably not in the way the other two did

I guess I have to break the news to my department now.

Hangs head.

Just wondering if anyone knows what role GPA plays in determining SSHRC scores?
