ktlynnjoy Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I know! I keep thinking that there is more that I need to do. I still have to check the original email and letters they sent me just to be sure I really did it haha. I think the only thing for now is final transcripts (at least for graduating seniors) and then they'll send us (or at least ETAs) Visa forms later! I'm so excited!!!! Ah, so we probably won't hear anything more until after our official transcripts go in, then? I've been fretting the same way...sent in my all my forms (except transcript, since I have a week until graduation yet) and have been paranoid that I'm not doing something I should be. But we can't apply for visas until we have like an official thing from Fulbright, correct? (Or am I delusional in thinking that? Ack.)
Kexin Renlei Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 (edited) If anyone has any info at all about how China full grant funding works, will you please, please PM me? I have another grant application due in 2 days and no idea what to put in my budget! Edited April 30, 2012 by Kexin Renlei
euphoria* Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I have never contemplated this before but saw it mentioned earlier. Are alternates including this info in their resumes/CVs? I'm not quite sure how effective it would be to state that you applied for a Fulbright but were granted alternate status? Thoughts on this? Of course, if granted a Full/ETA fellowship, I can see why it makes sense to include it. What do people think?

I was a Rhodes Nominee and a Ford Foundation HM a few years ago and I don't include it on my CV (though I see other people who do post similar things) bc I don't know...I didn't get it so it seems to almost detract from my other accomplishments. Interested to know others' responses!

Of course, if granted a Full/ETA fellowship, I can see why it makes sense to include it. What do people think? My parents explained it to me like this: Being designated as an alternate is actually an accomplishment, though obviously not as big as being named a principal. It means that you made it through the selection round at your school, through the initial round of applications, beat out a few thousand to be named a finalist and then managed to not be cut during the final round. While we didn't get the grant we still technically were never rejected. I think since most of us are pretty Type-A overachievers, being named an alternate kind of seems like a fail ... but in light of how vigorous the application process is and how competetive the Fulbright is, being named an altnerate can be seen as a pretty big deal. The senior management at my internship seemed to think it was pretty impressive (even though I didn't) as did my parents (though I took it with a grain of salt because ... well they're my parents). It's kind of like winning a silver medal in a sporting event. I think I'll be listing it on my resume under honors: Fulbright Program 2012-2013, Designated Alternate lg702 1
ROC14627 Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Hello Caribbean folks.... Spoke to Pam a few moments ago (1500hrs) and was told the following: The wait from the FSB is unusual this year, they are still waiting on decisions to be made, and we should have an answer soon. I thanked her for being so thoughtful and understanding. She did not promise a date; however, she did say that we should hear soon (very soon)…. I guess we are some of the few regions that are still left in limbo….

I agree with you in that I rarely add anything to my CV that I have not been fully awarded. After reading your response and contemplating it further, I agree that it makes sense to list it under my honors in my CV. The FB is such an enduring and overwhelming process and being an alternate is an acknowledgement of that, and I'm glad that I am able to put that down so others are also aware of the work and diligence I am capable of. Keeping positive in hopes that the status changes!

Today was a mellow day.... until I read this series of posts. Now I am back on the "When is 'soon?' I thought decisions had been made, we were just waiting on final review. What could she possible mean by 'soon?' What sort of a pause exactly, and what could that pause be swollen with?" I feel like I may be up there with joseph1983 soon- just word salad- if I don't hear something back "soon."

Some days I just don't care anymore; other days I feel maddened with anxiety/irritation/frustration. I feel like we're getting all kinds of different information, which tells me that nobody knows what the he** (can I get flagged for that word? lol, didn't wanna risk it) is going on. I was kinda stressed about today (since Pam told me when I called last week that "we're just waiting on the FSB for approval - notifications should go out before the beginning of May"), but the new information has had the opposite effect on me. Like I said, nobody seems to have any idea what's going on with our region or where the disconnect is - including Pam. If they're still waiting on the Caribbean commission for some countries to notify with their decisions, I guess we can all just kick back for another couple of weeks... Edit: I say this now. By tomorrow I could be ready to have a breakdown, so who knows anymore!! I think my poor husband may be the only person in my life who wants this wait over more than I do!! If it's not tomorrow, I don't know what will happen to my psychological state. We're being strung along with maybe by this date or that date... I know there are apparently some weird FSB back-ups this year but it would be awesome if they communicated that with us a little better instead of leaving people in the dark. AFX^79 Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 May not happen, fulbright grants may not exist, maybe the people who got them thus far are robots meant to trick others Better put, the fulbright is an economic resource that allows one to communicate directly with individuals in another country primarily through academic research and teaching experience. The truth is that we, Americans, have not yet completely satisfied the Fulbright's goal to build mutual cooperation among diverse peoples in our own country. I know that, whether or not I receive the Fulbright grant, there I still people outside my door who I am afraid and that I don't understand. I know that there are academic and teaching opportunities in my city that will allow me to confront the barriers I place between myself and others who I dislike simply because I don't understand the circumstances of their life and/or their perspective on what constitutes an ideal life..... So maybe I've got some money to finish my dissertation, improve my Spanish, and walk into a new light, but I am who I am, and I know that there are others outside my door who I don't know and who I'd like to meet........

I think you got it wrong my friend. That is NOT, based on my understanding, what Fulbright is about. Your vision of Fulbright's mission is selfish. Fulbright is not about US as researchers or foreigners. The program is about others and our ability to interpret their vision of the world; our ability to put ourselves in their shoes in an effort to project another side of the story. As a prospective Fulbrighter, my mission is to listen, learn, and admire my population of interest. My mission is certainly not about me learning a new language or becoming less racist. lg702, snowblossom2 and junemichelle 3

I agree that listening, learning, and admiring my population of interest is my mission as well. I guess I was trying articulate multiple perspectives that I observe on this blog. I can see why the tone of my writing in the last paragraph might sound selfish. I agree that the primary goal is not to work on one's dissertation or improve one's language skills. Also, diversity to me includes many different things such as occupation, class, race, sexual orientation, geographic place you call home, etc... Also, one of the Fulbright's goals is to "enable the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." (check my source here http://us.fulbrighto....org/about.html). I guess that's why used the phrase, "]the Fulbright's goal to build mutual cooperation among diverse peoples in our own country" Finally, I can only speak from my own experiences. From what I observe on a daily basis, there are still great barriers in this country between people who identify themselves differently. Where are you hoping to get placed? The following is an attempt to figure out why we are among the last ones to find out from the board. Our countries do not have to give out Fulbright grants/ETA's. Unlike other countries, such as Mexico and Argentina, our countries do not have a specific number of grants they must give out every year, whether apps were good or not. The board must first guarantee funding for those countries that MUST grant scholarships every year in accordance to international accords. Hence, the board deals with our budgetary issues last, since there is no pressure to grant scholarships in our area. If they run out of funding prior to reaching our area, there is no penalty, for international accords with Caribbean and CA countries do not obligate the State Dept. to grant scholarships to those countries. We are basically to deal with the leftovers. And that is why Caribbean and CA countries, according to data, are always, or almost always, last to receive final word from the board. bdoll and boxoatoc 2

This sounds like it would affect other regional grant programs too like SSA, those grouped in Central Asia, the Baltic States, etc... But SSA and Central Asia have already heard. What would make the Caribbean and CA different? Not sure that I understand.
