TV Shows?

Yeah, I know most of us are going into graduate school and that, yes, there are far more important things to do like coursework and research and grading (if you're a TA) instead of watching TV. However, TV is one of my ways of relaxing and thanks to our fabulous DVR, I record shows and watch them when it is best available to me.

So, basically, are there any TV shows you STILL follow, despite being a graduate student?

If all goes well, I'll still be able to keep up with:

  • Glee
  • Big Bang Theory
  • The Office
  • Project Runway

So, go on! What are your guilty pleasure TV shows?

When I was living with my parents after undergrad, I watched far too much TV for my own good. At school, I follow Modern Family and the Daily Show on Hulu.

But hey, it ended up paying off, as I was able to publish an article about the family rhetorics of Modern Family earlier this year. ;)

Whenever I sit down to watch TV for a bit, I like to watch junk like Toddlers and Tiaras, Storage Wars, Real Housewives of NJ, etc... they are definitely guilty pleasures, but they're also easy for me to walk away from during a commercial break.

As far as shows that I like to see all the way through, I like Adventure Time, Ugly Americans, Venture Bros, etc. I definitely lean towards comedy since it really lets me unwind.

I tried to cut down on the amount of TV while during my later years of undergrad, and by the end, the only shows that I was keeping up with were:

  • Castle
  • Bones
  • Modern Family
  • The IT Crowd

Sometimes I would just turn on the TV for a break, and I would end up getting sucked into Keeping Up With the Kardashians. I'm not keeping up with them anymore, since we no longer have cable. Probably a good thing.

Are you asking specifically about 'guilty pleasures'? if so, I honestly don't have any, in that I feel absolutely fine about everything I like. Well, maybe I wouldn't admit so readily that I watch 'So You Think You Can Dance', but other shows I regularly watch, such as: Community, Parks and Rec, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy, I'm not guilty about whatsoever. I think there's a bit of a snob in me in that I only tend to like respected and critically acclaimed shows. I also rewatch a lot of episodes from past shows, particularly Firefly, The Wire, and Battlestar Galactica. Frakking great shows :)

Right now,

  • Warehouse 13
  • Burn Notice
  • Royal Pains
  • White Collar

I spend a lot of time on USA and SyFy.

I've also been working my way through LOST on Netflix. Next, I think I may jump on the Game of Thrones bandwagon; I've heard good things.

When it returns, I will also be keeping up with Glee again. It's my guiltiest pleasure, currently (used to be GRΣΣK but the series ended).

Finally, favorite shows of all time: Star Trek, Scrubs, Firefly. And I'll always watch an episode of Seinfeld or M*A*S*H.

Wow, I seem like I watch a lot of TV--I promise I don't! Anyway, I won't have one when I get to grad school, so it'll be all Netflix and Hulu in about a month.

Burn notice is great! I forgot to add that to my list!

Sadly, the cable (even basic) went byebye many, many years ago and I'm on dial-up. So the only time I could watch TV is when I'm with friends or, when I travel for class, if there's a TV in my room. I tend to watch cartoons, in all honesty...Fairly Odd Parents, Family Guy, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Invader Zim, The Simpsons, Robot Chicken. And I'll watch some live-action shows if I find something good on, like Scrubs, Doctor Who, Kitchen Nightmares, The Office, Tosh, The Golden Girls, Unsolved Mysteries, Ghost Hunters, Hollywood Treasure, and Pawn Stars.

Game of Thrones is excellent! Highly recommended. I was able to download 9 episodes from HBO on demand, I had the last episode downloaded too but stupidly waited too long to watch it and by the time I was ready it disappeared because the show was only available until a certain point, so I've been checking everyday to see when it'll be replayed :-/ Love your Labyrinth avatar by the way :)

Shows that are basically staples include:

Deadliest Catch

Hoarders

Intervention

Next Food Network Star

Hell's Kitchen

House

Lock Down and Locked Up (uhh, yeah I like these prison shows)

The Borgias

Big Love (now over, but so fabulous it deserves a mention)

Cartoons:

The Simpsons

Futurama

King of the Hill

DVRing is the greatest thing since sliced bread...and so is Netflix and it's watch instantly feature.

There are some great things happening on TV as of late, but has anyone else noticed the incredibly obnoxious trend of the pop-up adds that are constantly blasted across the screen during the shows? Some of the biggest offenders are The History Channel (what a shame, this used to be my go to channel, not anymore), Food Network (also a shame), TLC, Fox, and AMC. These channels have the highest frequency of adds and they are the most distracting, with all kinds of moving parts flashing and swirling around. Some of them even have sound effects...double annoying. I can handle the little logos in the bottom corner of the screen and I generally don't have a problem with Discovery Channel but I was watching an old episode of Deadliest Catch and they had an add pop up in the middle...that's right in the middle of the screen on the bottom. It was a little man shooting, complete with sound effects, towards the corner where a pop up for "sons of guns" would splatter into view, like every 2 minutes...if I didn't love that show so much I would have turned it off. Won't be watching old episodes on Discovery anymore, I'll get them from Netflix...pop up free! Ok...I'm done...sorry.

I used to keep up with Criminal Minds and Grey's Anatomy, but I lost track of those when I canceled my cable a few months before moving in with my boyfriend. After getting my cable back, I just never picked up those shows for some reason.

My watch list:

  • Walking Dead
  • The Big C
  • Sons of Guns (my boyfriend's choice)
  • The Borgias
  • Spartacus

And I feel like I've left one out. I spend more time playing video games, though. :P

In undergrad, during the academic year, I watched these shows on a regular basis: Simpsons, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, Community, Reba, 30 Rock, Outsourced, and the Office. I clearly need to cure myself of this habit before starting grad school... Checking email, etc. during the ad breaks makes me more productive, or so I like to think ;), and I watch them on Hulu, so ad breaks are not so long.

I have Netflix and Hulu. I do not have cable, as it is too expensive and I rarely watch television. I watch Glee (catching up on the first season, and some episodes I missed in the second) and Law and Order: SVU (I've seen every single episode via Netlix and Hulu). I plan on starting Modern Family and finishing Pushing Daisies when I finish Glee. I like to watch series altogether, which is why I'm not fond of television, although when Glee returns I will be watching the episodes as they come out on Hulu. I don't mind waiting a few days. I'm also into Adventure Time because it's odd and I love odd shows like that. I need to find a way to watch The Wire (without buying box sets) and I do want to see what all the fuss about Mad Men and Parks and Rec are about, and Royal Pains sounds interesting. I also think Psych is funny.

Huh, I watch more TV than I thought.

When I am at someone else's place and if I have control of the cable, I also tend to watch a lot of HGTV (especially House Hunters and My First Place), What Not To Wear, Say Yes to the Dress, and Bridezillas (which is hilarious).

I also don't have cable but do have Netflix and Hulu and the internet more broadly. I am a regular watcher of a few things and am a season behind on others.

Regularly: Chopped, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Make It or Break It, Off the Map, In Plain Sight, Real Housewives of Atlanta, Real Housewives of Orange County, Next Food Network Star, Biggest Loser

Season behind: House, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Royal Pains, CSI, CSI: Miami, Eureka,

Finally watching: The Wire, Treme, Glee

I realize that seems like a ton of TV. But, to be honest, I watch a lot of it while traveling to pass the time.

I watch terrible reality shows. Don't know why. I love them though. Everything from MTV to Slice to E! to HGTV. Those are probably my main reality show channels. The only non-reality show I really watch is Criminal Minds. I absolutely love that show, but I need to catch up on the most recent seasons! I mostly just watch old reruns whenever they are on.

I flippin' love television. I definitely spend more time watching "TV" (Netflix and Hulu) than reading for leisure. 30 Rock, Office, Parks and Recreation, Community, 30 Rock reruns on Netflix, Modern Family, Hoarders, Mad Men, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother (even though it's not that good anymore), Family Guy... While it takes me weeks to finish a single novel, it only takes 8 hours to watch an entire season of Family Ties reruns. It is amazing how much TV I can watch and still keep my life in order. There is a way to consume massive quantities of TV without guilt: always pair television with mindless chores. I like to watch TV when I am getting ready in the morning, showering (fold down the toilet seat and set down laptop), doing the dishes, folding laundry, heating up a can of Annie's star pasta and tomato sauce for dinner, eating dinner, clipping nails, and so on. Would I say I have a problem? No, because I know when to stop--and you should always stop when your eyes start to burn. I suspect that when I return to school I will be able to manage both my academic life and my habit. If I continue to get dressed in the morning and do my laundry every other week, I should be able to watch all the television there is to watch.

I am very much with the netflix crowd here. I've been watching through The West Wing, Futurama, Mythbusters and the like on that. But I tend to watch The Daily Show and The Colbert Report on the comedy central website, to keep myself up to date on some news, and still watch specials and some news when I go visit my parents and can 'borrow' their cable for a little while. ;-)

I love this thread. I am glad you guys are not "no TV" snobs :)

Most of my faves were already mentioned. I won't have cable when I move to school, but I will keep my Netflix and binge on series. Unlimited streaming is amazing.

Ok, almost time for Project Runway.
