Waiting it out 2012... 'I've just submitted my application' thread

I actually find myself refreshing Gmail app on my phone and physically clicking refresh in browser even though it refreshes itself... Especially when I started seeing news of other departments of schools I applied to...

Since submitting my apps, I've started smoking again after a year and a half smoke-free. So, not handling waiting very well!

Totally understand this, I am trying to quit but find myself lighting up because I am so nervous all the time!

I can't concentrate, and it's a roller coaster. Every conversation I have persuades me that "Duh, I'll be rejected I sound to pompous about a budding school of thought", then 10 minutes later "My goodness, sitting in this grad seminar with my POI is reassuring of my research interests and abilities, of course I'll get in!", 5 hours later I can be found crying on my apartment floor with 12 backup plans written on old term papers. Whoever invented this process is pure evil.

The anxiety of anticipation is KILLING me! This is worse than any other application I have ever submitted for anything else- at least those I knew I had better odds.... and this is why I don't gamble. It's a good thing I'm going drinking tonight :)

You feeling any better?

Yeah; we're all a bit stessed and nervous, but we're crossing our fingers for good results for my flatmate. If she gets bad news, though, we'll be there all the way to support her.

Sending my best, Spriteling! We're all here for you!

:) Thanks, I appreciate it.

^ Story of my life, though apparently Minnesota and Vandy are starting to get back to people now....

Yeah, one of my friends got into Minnesota Public Policy yesterday... made me wish I had applied there, just so I could hear from SOMEONE now ... aside from Maryland, I've likely got almost a two month wait ahead of me. It's just killing me that my friends are figuring things out and able to make plans and I can't for aaaaaages. I just want to know!

I'm with you on Minnesota, though I'm cautiously hopeful that their quantitative psychology program is just taking a little longer to process applications this year.

Well, hello. I'm just joining in on this forum (although, I've been freaking out for all of a month now). I'm just glad I'm not the only one.

oh don't worry you aren't alone but lo! there is a light creeping closer :)

Yep, February! :blink::wacko:

However, I received two interview invitations last week, which is some of the earliest I've seen on the history of the musicology board (different from music composition) although musicology still has a small representation here. That got the ball rolling on my anxiety and lack of productivity.

I just found out that one of my referees wrote someone a letter that explicitly did not recommend the applicant, and now I'm paranoid. I have been mostly worried about ad-comms reading my writing samples, my SoP, and noting my lack of publications, and I've just been totally complacent about my letters. I just assumed the worst one would agree to write is something generic (not sparkling), but still positive. I'm telling myself that this ref submitted a letter for the schools that have contacted me for interviews, so whatever is written can't be terrible, right? Right??

Why, in the 3 minutes that it took to write this post, did I not get any new emails?? So I'll continue this post - I had a dream last night that I got a letter by mail and an identical email from Cornell! Yay, but postal mail is usually bad. I opened it up and saw "Congratulations" but blinked and it was gone! Then I read that "Your application results have been delayed for 2-3 weeks because.........." nothing.

Still no new email! Maybe I should...work....

Hello all,

Need some advice here. Because I have been obsessively checking the results board, it seems that a lot of Emory applicants from various programs are hearing back now about interviews, but no one has posted an interview request for my specific program at Emory. I know all programs don't have the same protocols/deadlines... but just reading the boards, it seems consistent that the graduate school has notified last week (programs ranging from anthropology to sociology) I am tempted to email the program and ask if they have sent out invitations yet. I am just not sure if that would be appropriate to ask. Maybe part of me doesn't want to know if I have been rejected? Advice?

I think a lot of people on the boards have emailed about whether invitations have been sent out - as long as you're polite and don't nag, I don't see why it would be a problem.

I've only applied to one program this season (long story why) and I just got back from their interview weekend - I do NOT know how to deal with the wait right now. Uuuuughhhhhhh
