Kitkat Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 So I think many of us are in the same boat when it comes to the waiting game. I know that I am starting to drive my significant other with my worrying about getting into grad school. The question is how are/did people keeping themselves busy during the waiting period? I still have a semester to go, and will keep myself busy with that, but fear the moments of break that I have, still.
LLajax Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 I just discovered Fruit Ninja. Judging by the amount of my day that keeps disappearing, I think it will help pass the time.
lizardclan Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Working on the human genome project is making the wait easier for me. I suggest picking up a new research project to pass the time. -the lizard
LCBucky Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 the 20 hours i'm taking this final semester are keeping me extremely busy....thank goodness.
coonskee Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Keeping busy with lab and Skyrim... Or at least trying to wings of bone 1
wheatGrass Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 I'm following the GOP primaries. This is remarkably time consuming, even for a Canadian like myself. My favourite commentary sites and publications are having a field day, but there's a fascinating undercurrent of dread running through much of the coverage. rising_star and wheatGrass 2
wlkwih2 Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Reading philosophy. I'm all into deconstructing time, space and myself. How appropriate!
antecedent Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 I'm training for a half-marathon...the thought was that at the end of a full week of training I wouldn't have the energy to obsess over grad apps, but my consistent presence in the Grad Cafe would suggest I was a bit off the mark there... kbeckenrode 1
socihealth Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 antecedant, that is so inspiring! i think ill get back into a running routine too, this is a great time to focus one extra energy towards a race!
wlkwih2 Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 OK, we need to make some kind of a drinking game. However, instead of drinking, the loser isn't allowed to refresh his inbox for an hour. tauren and LCBucky 2
MakeYourself Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 OK, we need to make some kind of a drinking game. However, instead of drinking, the loser isn't allowed to refresh his inbox for an hour. What if we get instant updates on our phone? Hehe.
kbeckenrode Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 i draw a lot, as well as working full time in a lab. but, it's so depressing because it's interview weekend here at harvard systems biology.. and i haven't gotten any invites from my schools yet. but, as always and in good spirit--good luck everyone! p.s: i also waste time thinking about really crazy plan b's. like..i'll move to brooklyn and work as a designer. ahh, art to science and right back to art. talk about whiplash..

jldstudio Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Or can we maybe also keep the drinking part? :0 LCBucky and wlkwih2 2
LCBucky Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 done and done. drinking + no refreshing inbox for an hour = genius
RortyRorty Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Since I have finished my degree program, I decided to audit a philosophy of language course. I know most of the students and the professor is my favorite in the department. He also wrote one of my recommendations. I feel this is the most beneficial way to pass the time and continue learning while in waiting limbo.
Kitkat Posted January 28, 2012 Author Posted January 28, 2012 p.s: i also waste time thinking about really crazy plan b's. like..i'll move to brooklyn and work as a designer. ahh, art to science and right back to art. talk about whiplash.. In a way, too much of this thinking is what I am trying to avoid. To a degree, it would be useful just in case. But I don't want to at the same time psych myself out of grad school before I even hear back. At this point it looks like I will be keeping myself busy from a number of different sources. School work, working in the lab, catching up on my own reading, playing computer games. Basically a multitude of things that I can get my hands on.
GreenePony Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 (edited) I'm taking an extra class. I could get away with 6 credits but I'm taking another 4000 level to keep me occupied and I picked up a new long-term project at work. Now that the semester is actually picking up steam I'm a bit busier. I'm also being more crafty. I finished a pair of pants, re-hemmed a bunch of things, re-acquainted myself with power tools (DH is terrified), re-framing some things, and am now debating trying to prefect the printout to canvas transfer process. Max Power Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 i've thrown myself into powerlifting. it turns out spending a day at a meet is a really good way to not think about apps at all
wlkwih2 Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 i've thrown myself into powerlifting. it turns out spending a day at a meet is a really good way to not think about apps at all Turning those apps into abs, yeah! OnceAndFutureGrad 1
logik36 Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 I've delayed taking my Gen Ed credits until now, so I've immersed myself in philosophy. Which has been good, since there is an ungodly amount of reading that keeps me busy. Also, been catching up on TV series that I have let fall by the wayside (Mad Men, etc).
antecedent Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 i've thrown myself into powerlifting. it turns out spending a day at a meet is a really good way to not think about apps at all That was my rationale with training - if I go on a two hour long run, come back and eat, then nap, my mind is too tired to worry. It turns out that only takes care of one week day though. I must say, sitting at a desk all day at work with a computer reeeally doesn't help the anxiety. Being able to check my email, grad cafe, and my apps in a constant loop not only is slowly driving me mad, it's also seriously impacting my productivity at work...
Max Power Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 (edited) Turning those apps into abs, yeah! sadly for my girlfriend, not quite. you have made the all too common mistake of conflating powerlifting and its array of strong fatties who get cranky when you take their ding-dongs away from them with body builders who look more muscular but are almost always considerably weaker at the same body weight Edited January 28, 2012 by jsclar
starmaker Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Full-time day job MS thesis (and other class) Being an Occupy medic (woo walked in to what we thought was tear gas to rescue people, but it was just some &^%*^% idiot's smoke cannister) LARPing Running If anybody reading this knows me in real life, they just figured out who I am, if they hadn't already.
LCBucky Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Running....definitely increasing my running. Putting all that worrying/anxiety/etc. energy into working out. It is rather therapeutic!
