oseirus Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 have you heard KRS-One's recent "Aztechnical" track? WOW. Paradigm shift-inducing: when my wife (not a hiphophead but knows a lot thru me) heard it first and told me "you have to hear this!!"

I remember when Hip Hop had a message beyond learning how to Dougie ... what happened to the Voice of the People?

oseirus Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Wow. I adore this. Is the rest of his stuff just as wonderful? His early oeuvre is just a-fricking-mazing ... listen to a song called the Sound of the Beast
GreenePony Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 After telling an underclassman that I was accepted to a program a common friend was wait-listed to and I statistically didn't fit the average: "Well maybe they're one of those that randomly selects people?"
svh Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 People talk to me about going into debt. Then, I have to explain to them that PhD programs pay you to go. And they just don't get the concept... crazygirl2012 1
koolherc Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 His early oeuvre is just a-fricking-mazing ... listen to a song called the Sound of the Beast Sound of Da Police* other suggestions for Frostfire, among his more didactic songs. If you're looking for something more light, he has plenty of that, too... newer (post 1996 or so): HipHop Lives 9 Elements HipHop Knowledge 5% (oseirus, you're gonna wanna check this one out if you haven't heard it already) older (86-96): Why Is That You Must Learn Black Cop Also, MC's Act Like They Don't Know is one of my personal favs He's had a stylistic revival of late, I feel.

Interestingly, if you google search "Sound of the Beast" with the artist's name, you get to the right song. Always a bonus. I think if it was just the audio, it might be a bit much, but with the video it works really well. Maybe because on some level there's the implicit acknowledgement of "Well, yeah, THOSE cops are assholes." Looking forward to the didactic works.
purpledinosaur Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Upon calling to tell my Mom I was accepted to CUNY with funding: Mom: Well, didn't you already get accepted there? Me: No... I got an interview. Not the same thing. Mom: Oh. Well I already told you you would get in everywhere. Hasn't anything interesting happened in your life? Thanks Mom, your enthusiasm is contagious!

MonkeyPants Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 "Oh honey, when we come down to visit you this weekend we'll go out and celebrate your acceptance!" Thanks, Mom. Not a peep from any school yet, but thanks.
nanoman1 Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 after being accepted into a top choice for ms/phd in env. fluid mechanics "So you weren't applying for the MBA? Is it too late to switch?" ... sigh
chibuku Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 love to see KRS-One drop some knowledge - best thing I've found on this forum koolherc 1

Sounds like my mom when I was applying for undergrad -- I found ou I'd gotten into Columbia U (my dream school)-- I opened the site, screamed, ran out of my room saying "I GOT IN!!!!!!!!" -- her response: "oh." parents are great

PhDreams Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 This thread should be named You Must Learn... Nicely done, koolherc. Anytime someone can make the hip hop connection it makes me all happy inside.
axc Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Oh, I hate that area, if you don't get accepted there its a blessing and you should be happy.

Dal Espyrn Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 "Why are you applying there? Doesn't [insert name of completely random local/regional school] have a good program?" This is my favorite. The closest place I've applied is 300 miles from here, but everybody wants me to apply to the CSU campus I live adjacent to. (To be fair, I did look at it... but no. No no no.)

laviola Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I get asked about location too. The school I want to go to is on the other coast, and people always say it's too far.. but honestly it doesn't seem that far to me. It is, geographically, but I can easily fly back and my family's so dispersed as it is that it's not as though there's one place where everyone is. It bugs me though, people don't realize that sometimes you NEED to branch out!
