Yes I'm going to the open house! I'm just overwhelmed right now -- the date is the exact same as Missouri, but I'm going to try and arrange something else with them.

I'm still waiting to wake up -- good luck to everyone still waiting.

Really happy for you, Marlowe! :)

I am, and am both excited and freaked out for it. I am rather sure somehow I'm going to appear an idiot. I wonder how long it will go into the evening, too, and how it's structured. All my other visits are over two or three days, so I don't have a clue what they'll be able to get through in a few hours with tons of question-asking prospectives milling about. Anyways, see ya there!

I think all three of us have similar interests, don't we? I'm curious about all those things too, myriad. My visit to UMass is going to go all day pretty much. But, I'm sure they have something organized. What kind of questions are you guys bringing with you to the event?

By the way, I like your new Dumas avatar.

I wasn't going to go to the open house, because they still hadn't given me any info re: funding, and I've been offered good money elsewhere. But today, FINALLY, they tell me I got the ECF (guessing someone withdrew?) So I'll be there too (no long journey, I live in Brooklyn) - looking farward to seeing everyone there!

myriadways, are you going to the UW-Madison welcome events too? I'm curious: what is your specialty, and which way are you leaning between the two programs?

I'll be at the Madison thing. Just got an email from my hosts -- they are baking me a pie!

Not that's how you coax a student! What do you study marlowe, and which schools are you favoring at the moment?

I don't envy you either. I'm still on the CUNY waitlist, but since funding is probably a no-go regardless at this point, I don't think I could afford to live in the City.

Well, as we know, CUNY accepts a large cohort, and a good one too, so we can assume that quite a number of the best (ECF-funded) candidates will drop. I assume that's what happened with me receiving the fellowship today, and as decision time gets closer I'm betting more and more will drop and more ECFs will be re-issued. So I wouldn't count it out yet! (Although, good lord, this is one damn expensive city)

Edit: I apologize, I misread your post as being on the waitlist for funding. Still, same principle likely applies. Excited for Madison!

I am! I go Maryland->CUNY->Madison in short succession this week. It'll be a whirlwind. I'm Af-Am lit and Af Diaspora (so I'd be doing the Afro-Bridge program at Madison). Between the two, I have no clue. They both frighten me funding-wise, so in that sense neither really stands out against Maryland or Vandy. Again, no clue. Absolutely. No. Clue. AARGh.

No idea about questions yet, that is my project for tomorrow. Any suggestions aside from the usual? I guess my main fear is being too bold with the questions I ask to faculty or students. What's too prying? What's not prying enough? Feel it out? I dunno.

Thanks! He's a handsome devil. I would so much rather be buried in Monte Cristo right now than attending class or thinking about grad school. New project: read it in french.

For CUNY funding I have a question - From what I understand, if I get an ECF (soon, hopefully!) I will still have to pay the difference between instate and out of state tuition.

Does anyone here know much about this? As in, would I be able to establish in state residency w/in the first year?

What does the difference normally work out to in the first year?

Is it really possible to live in NYC on the ECF?

I have also heard that the teaching load is overwhelming - one current student told me that she gave up her fellowship, took a part time time, and took out loans in order to have enough time to work on her dissertation. Just trying to figure out if this is even a feasible option for me...

I didn't know refusing to go to the open house because of funding was an option. Students without ECFs--let's revolt!

Kidding. I'm totally honored to be accepted and am at least going to check out the info session.

I'll be attending! Looking forward to meeting some of you there. It looks like the information session will last about an hour; informal "party" to follow.

We've also been invited to the preceding Friday Forum event. I was tempted to go to last week's because someone from Rutgers was speaking and I thought maybe I could ask him for info on the Rutgers waitlist. That wouldn't be stalkerish, right?

haha, I'm just kidding!

So is anyone going to the Friday Forum or the informal after-party thing?

Am I extremely lame for honestly suggesting a meet up tonight? I wasn't even accepted into CUNY!! (Well, the MALS program, yes, but I don't think it's a viable option fiscally.) But I want to meet all the New York Grad Cafe-ers :)
