chapter1 Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 I've been following this thread for all eternity (aka when I found out I was waitlisted at UCLA). I probably should have spoken up sooner to commiserate, but while lurking I've found all of your musings very helpful. Like so many of you folks, my waitlist is my only option. Blah. Thunderpaws, I feel you on the Easter thing. Talking about this stuff with family sucks, especially when one of my cousins just got a tenure track position at an Ivy and I'm still struggling to get accepted period. Just wanted to wish you all the best during our (hopefully!!) last week of waiting.
dazedandbemused Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 (edited) Yeah, this waiting is turning me into a crazy person, and I didn't even have a hope of getting off of a waitlist until Thursday. I had basically resigned myself to unfunded MA work, and now I just might get in to a PhD! I can't even imagine if I'd been waiting to hear from these people for a month or more! You guys have got serious fortitude. I don't think I'm going to get any sleep for the next few days. Luckily, the DGS said I should know for sure by Wednesday Edited April 9, 2012 by dazedandbemused
wikichic Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 2 months and 6 days of waiting, for me. Not that I'm counting, or anything. This is the week of judgement! Wishing you all the best of luck
transcendental Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Maybe it is my body's natural response to the holiday feasting, but I'm getting an elevated heart rate thinking of this week. 7 days to go.
CrunchySocks Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Antecedant--Yes! That's what will happen. Anxious--I don't know how the 15th being a Sunday will work, but I have seem schools make offers after the 15th. With the last two days of this whole thing being on a weekend, I wouldn't be surprised if we get a few last minute things happening after the weekend. At this point in the game, I kind of just want to know one way or the other. Easter Dinner's going to super fun tonight. I've been avoiding my extended family for a few months to spare myself the anxiety of answering their questions. But now there is no escape! I was just curious Thunderpaws what your area of interest entails in terms of literary research or if there are any post-colonial/modern British people out there.
Fiona Thunderpaws Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Chapter--best of luck to you as well! I hope your Easter was question-free! Mine mostly was--I think the news leaked out. I don't think I will sleep tonight, I feel like tomorrow will be an important day somehow (for UTA people, at least). Whether it is auspicious or soul-crushing is yet to be determined. Best of luck everyone as we head into this final week! I feel like some sort of St Crispin's Day speech should be in order, but my Shakespeare is rusty.
Fiona Thunderpaws Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 I was just curious Thunderpaws what your area of interest entails in terms of literary research or if there are any post-colonial/modern British people out there. I'm a mix of gender and sexuality studies, Arabic post-colonial, and American popular culture/20th century fiction. CrunchySocks 1
CrunchySocks Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 I'm a mix of gender and sexuality studies, Arabic post-colonial, and American popular culture/20th century fiction. Sounds nice. Your area and mine would mix rather well except most of my work is neither Arabic or American. Good luck on your news this week. I am pretty nervous. I have one unfunded acceptance and two waitlists and then another school that hasn't said anything so far.
GuateAmfeminist Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 I was just curious Thunderpaws what your area of interest entails in terms of literary research or if there are any post-colonial/modern British people out there. My interests are "postcolonial" - Latin America and literature/memoirs by immigrants particularly. Not a huge Brit lit person - I do like Woolf and I am also interested in Caribbean authors from islands that used to be/are closely tied to Britain through colonization. CrunchySocks 1

One of my readers on my M.A. thesis was a specialist in Caribbean lit. I am more Antipodes and South Pacific though. GuateAmfeminist 1
Fiona Thunderpaws Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 I just have to say, I love the universality of postcolonialism. There's three of us here, and our studies overlap only marginally. Go postcolonial people! In other news, no reply from my DGS yet... I'm beginning to wonder if I have the wrong email, but that's not true, because gmail is pretty much idiot proof. *sigh*
rainy_day Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Only six more days....I don't know if I should be relieved or terrified that the wait is almost over.
Datatape Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 I think I'm just going to get a big bag of marbles and start leaving a few of them wherever I go. Doubt very much I'm going to remain intact until Sunday. wikichic and Fiona Thunderpaws 2
Fiona Thunderpaws Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 I feel like we're going into battle. "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers, for he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother!" Datatape, wikichic and rainy_day 3
rachmuz Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 The Easter bunny turned my wait-list into an acceptance... I will be attending UNC-Chapel Hill this fall! Woohoo! Hang in there folks - it can and will happen! rainy_day, Fiona Thunderpaws, TripWillis and 2 others 5

Hang in there folks - it can and will happen! Hell yeah!!! So psyched for you! UNC-Chapel Hill was the program I wish I had applied to. Congratulations!
Vee Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Congratulations! You are a paragon of hope for the rest of us! UNC-Chapel Hill's Eng. Dept. is top notch and North Carolina is such a great place. In no time, you'll be y'all-ing folks--in an endearing, all-inclusive way. The Easter bunny turned my wait-list into an acceptance... I will be attending UNC-Chapel Hill this fall! Woohoo! Hang in there folks - it can and will happen!
TripWillis Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Anyone have suggestions for avoiding thinking about the waitlist for the next 5 days?
hiphopanonymous Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Anyone have suggestions for avoiding thinking about the waitlist for the next 5 days? I saw Damsels in Distress at Sunshine yesterday and really enjoyed it. That's good for a couple hours. Beyond that? I recommend drinking heavily.
anxious_aspirant Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Anyone who would like to plan/teach/grade for me for the next however-long should feel free to fill his/her time that way! Just kidding...I think. But for serious, this level of crazy is not so conducive to educating teenagers. September Ms. a_a would look at April Ms. a_a in horror and shame. And my April self looks back nostalgically, yearning for a simpler time, uncomplicated by life-altering decisions.
CrunchySocks Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 I am going on a trip to Oregon to see my boyfriend. Thus, at least he can console me when or if I fall apart.
rainy_day Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Just got rejected off one wait list, but not the school I'm really gunning for, so we're still holding it together at chez rainy day.

Ugh, sorry to hear my absented spot couldn't come through for you. At least they had the courtesy to let you know either way... Good luck with the other two!
