This is legit one of my biggest concerns about moving out of RI.

Haha. Also, it turns out everyone outside of the MA/RI-ish area hates the Pats. It's a hostile environment out here.

Does anybody else think Boston University might still be sending out acceptances?

There's still this small sliver of hope even though I know that I don't have a chance in hell of getting in there. Completely irrational.

At what point is it Ok to call universities to ask about one's status? I've seen rejections and acceptances here for several places where my online application status has not changed (for example Columbia, which I'm almost sure is a rejection) and I just want to know already!

I don't know about what time is "okay" to call and ask, but I've definitely done this for a couple schools! I figured that the cost of being a little bit annoying did not outweigh my peace of mind.

I haven't, but I just looked it up and it looks awesome! Thanks for the recommendation!

It is a pretty good book. It's also worth checking out Waldeman's The Submission, El Rassi's Arab in America, and Naqvi's Home Boy. I'm currently doing my MRes project on representations of community in post-9/11 fiction, so I am overloaded on post-9/11 stuff. :D Personally, I want to find a bit more fiction written by American authors of muslim descent... I have those latter two, and also Hamid's The Reluctant Fundamentalist (not that Hamid is American, but he's spent large sections of his life there)... I want more!

there's also zeitoun... which admittedly isn't fiction & is written by a white author, but it deals with muslim america post-9/11 + hurricane katrina, so may be of interest to both of you.

Yes, very nice to see another Bostonian! I have the shame of not being a born and raised New Englander, but I've lived here for over five years now, so I'm hoping I'm starting to overcome it. I've been a Boston sports fan since before they started winning (2000), which I think helps a bit.

I had a lot of trouble choosing a track, but ultimately I went with American Studies (partially because of my UG and partially because I'm fairly certain most of the faculty I wanted to work with were in that area. You definitely sound like a great fit! My broad interests are also postmodernism, late 20th/21st century culture, and post-war literature. My MA thesis contrasted programming in the 90s and 00s to examine cultural trends, focusing on intertextuality and legitimation. I would like to continue work that compares pre- and post- 9/11 culture, as well as how cultural events and canonical works are reinterpreted in modern culture. It's a little late for me, so hopefully that makes sense. ;)

Have you gotten any good news yet? If you don't mind sharing, you can PM me. Considering our interests are so similar, I'd also love to know where you applied. I get the feeling I will be doing this again, so if there are any programs I may have overlooked it would be great to get going on some research.

Your interests are pretty close to mine. Maybe I should have applied for some American Studies programs! My WS was on DeLillo's "Falling Man" and the shift away from Pomo in reaction to 9/11...perhaps my downfall.

I don't think so. I've been wait-listed, and they've sent out all their acceptances and wait-lists already. I guess if everybody turned them down, the situation might change, but... that is unlikely.

Can anyone claim the UFlorida rejection on the results board? It's via e-mail, so I thought it might be legit...

The rejection posted is NOT mine, but I e-mailed UF this morning to ask about my status. The reply was something like "I will send out notices next week. Watch your e-mail." So... doesn't tell me much, but I am probably going to assume rejection from a reply like that, since acceptances there tend to be phoned. Not sure if that helps you out or not!

It does! It would still be nice to find out if the rejection is real, but at least we should know by next week...

Well, an acceptance just went up on the board, via e-mail. So there's that.

Yeah, did you see the stats, though? IDK why, but I get the feeling there's someone intent on screwing with the UF applicants this year.

I dunno about that, my stats are pretty similar to that person's. I need to keep hope alive.

Don't worry, MA is a totally different ball game (trust me, I have one). Besides, you've already got two great options! No need to discount Florida yet. :)

I couldn't take it, so I called Florida. My exact question was, "have all admitted PhD candidates been notified?" The response, "No. We're still working on those."

I thought my crazy could benefit the group...

I've heard Michigan State's program is really losing it's reputation. Anyone have any advice on whether to take an acceptance there or not?

Been accepted to IU Bloomington with six years funding! :D Wow. After so many rejections (lost track), I can't believe there is a school that wants me.
Congratulations!!!! That's awesome!

I haven't heard that its losing its reputation, just that funding is hard to come by.

Anyone else still waiting to hear from Boston College recently have their options chance on the Agora portal? I still don't have a decision but all of a sudden there are financial aid tabs and such? Sorry if I pop this around multiple threads.

I can't verify much, but I had that program on my initial list of places to apply, and my adviser made this icky face and was like "No. Take that one off." I told her it was relatively well ranked and sounded interesting, and she kind of softened her response and said I could apply if I wanted to, but that she didn't hear good things about that program. I have no idea what this means, but I didn't apply. (I had plenty other schools to waste money on app fees for. Ha.)

Of course, this is the opinion of just one professor at one university and she could have some crazy bias I don't know about. But she is in charge of the hiring committee, and said she hadn't liked any of the applicants she'd seen from that program.

Personally, though, I think the program looked interesting. Right now USNews has it ranked at #63, so it will be interesting to see where it falls after the new rankings are released this month, especially since USN is pretty widely recognized for ranking based on reputation.

Mine is the same (in that it is unchanged).
