Has anyone heard ANY results (including waitlisting and interviews) for the painting/drawing programs at:

Arizona State, U. Iowa, Herron, or U. Oregon?

Hey Josholas

I was also rejected from U Iowa on the 26th by snail mail and Accepted to ASU on the 27th via email. Both for the painting/drawing program. ASU has also already had their "new grad student visit day" I feel like at this point if you haven't heard anything you should just call these programs and ask them what's up. Good luck with all your applications!

hey --- clay peeps!

any one else check status at vcu --- mine no longer said ready for review...but i couldn't find my status...anyone else with same issue?

Thanks!

Hey relentlesslemons

Having sent my acceptance in earlier this week, I know for sure that one of the spots available at VCU has been filled. There is one other applicant who was offered acceptance, but Andrea did not indicate if he has already accepted. I also know that as of two weeks ago, Andrea was still waiting to send rejection letters.

have you called them?  that's crazy they haven't sent out anything yet, especially if they'd expect you to reply by April 15th.

this was interesting, i talked to financial aid at Herron and she said she wouldn't be able to give me any info on loans until 10 or so business days AFTER admissions sends my info over to them (which might not even happen for a few more days).  Which means i wouldn't know my loan info before the april 15th deadline.  i asked her how that would work, since i need to know my finances are set before i accept, and she said that i can accept anyway and that doesn't obligate me to having to pay anything...  so... what good is accepting by april 15th, then, if it's not binding?  that also makes me think i can accept and then if a spot at IUB opens in a few months i could potentially just go to IUB.  that would be extremely rude, though, wouldn't it?  or wouldn't it? ...

Have you talked with the Director of Admissions Anthony Scott? He is the one that I have been discussing funding with... I also applied to another program at Herron and they have not given me any information yet and can neither confirm or deny that I got in, so I'm assuming they are holding out to see if they got acceptances from the first round... Has anyone confirmed that they are indeed going to Herron for Photo? I emailed the lady at IUB yesterday and she has not sent me a response yet. I need to make a decision soon and am frustrated that the other programs haven't given me a straight answer or an answer at all... It's only major life decisions you know...

IUB is a great school. I've lived here for 10 years, I came here for undergrad and still here! Hold out as long as you can for IUB, you won't regret it.

I got an email from Herron photo where she mentioned that they had heard back from two students so far.. I didn't think the funding was too great for me. with out of state tuition I need to come up with 45k.. so it doesn't seem like I'll be going there. especially with my offer from Florida! seems like a great program though and I may still go for a visit.

Has anyone outside of America heard from SVA? I've been waiting for my letter and it hasn't arrived yet. But I live in a third world country and our national Post cannot be relied upon AT ALL. I hope they sent the letter through Fed Ex.

Has anyone heard from RISD about Painting?

I've read that some people have been interviewed and some have already been rejected. Neither of those things have happened to me.

Also, today I contacted the programs that I was accepted to that I don't plan to attend to give them my final decision. I hope this frees up spots for patiently waiting applicants, for this reason I encourage everyone on this site who has already received their acceptances and is starting to make their decisions to do the same (don't just wait until the deadline passes to avoid hurting a program's feelings, although I doubt many people take this route, I think it is worth saying). If you don't need to wait until the absolute last day of the deadline, best to let the programs know you won't be attending as soon as possible because this not only makes the spot available for another applicant, it also frees up any funding you may have received. With that said, always do what's best for you, important decisions take time.

Thank you! I'm not waiting for that particular school, but I do know how agonizing the waitlist game can be. I hope most applicants are as considerate as you.

Despite some recent um, awkward posts on this forum, I just want to say thank you to everyone who has been supportive and helpful on this forum! I don't think I would've survived the application process without it!!!

I get the illustration thing a lot, but I have no interest in that. Illustration is inherently commercial or for some sort of purpose, while fine arts is outside of that. There's lots of artists that do illustrative-type work that aren't illustrators, say like Marcel Dzama or Amy Cutler. But really I think people just associate drawing with illustration, and everyone sees painters as fine arts.

Sorry, I am a day late with this post! I've been sick and working. O_O

Anyhoo, dude, don't worry too much about any of the comments thus far. "Illustration" is a dirty word in the world of fine arts, but it doesn't have to be. The reason for this pejorative use is complex, and so I think a lot of it stems from confusing the "easiness" of the reading of an image with as you said, mistakenly associating graphic/linear (and sometimes humorous) works with that easiness. Personally, I can see your images developing, but they're just not quite there yet, however you ARE definitely on your way. Don't worry about potentially being read as illustrative, and just keep making the work you need to make and pushing yourself and your comfort zone (with both regards to ideas and form). I can see a little bit of Lisa Yuskavage dotted in and around your portfolio, which is interesting. It took me like 5 years of bad drawings to get into school (and your drawings are way ahead of what I was doing a few years ago!). I have also gotten the "illustration" bit, b/c of my love of line-work and use of humor. So don't worry, and just keep making stuff! I was going to remain anonymous, but I have nothing to hide nor regret any of my past posts, so here's my website if you're curious.

Good luck to you in your future applications, and as the Koreans say, fighting!!!!

I didn't mean illustration in a pejorative sense, at all. I was thinking more along the lines of fine arts illustration which yes, can exist for commercial purposes, but also can exist as art outside of that. ( Audrey Kawasaki, James Jean, Mark Ryden, and Nick Iluzada are good example of people who would do 'fine art illustration' and I would actually categorize Dzama there too. Personally I feel the only difference between Jean and Dzama is the Zwirner representation for Marcel)

Perhaps a post-bacc year would be good?

As a side note, I'm not saying peeps here were necessarily using the term "illustrative" as a pejorative specific to the work being discussed here. But it can be, as I've heard it used that way by countless professors and artists. I just think the semantic argument that people can get into can be distracting, so I don't mean to put anyone down. It's interesting, b/c I feel like in Asia, the boundaries between design, illustration, and fine arts are far more fluid and overlapping. Not sure why that is, but it sure was fun to be in a culture that loves paper!!

Oops - that wasnt supposed to seem defensive, sorry if it came off that way, i actually agree with you! Also, i have heard it used in that negative way by painting professors. Always has bugged me, since illustration is equally important/interesting to me.

No offense to any of you chiming in, but I didn't actually ask for a critique! I didn't get into any schools this year, but I didn't have a lot of time to research. I previously was accepted to Cranbrook, SMFA, and SVA (funds issues prevented me from attending), so I'm not desperate for an acceptance or fear that no program will accept my work as "fine arts". Of course I will keep exploring and working on my art, but I do disagree that fine arts cannot include any narrative themes (as they erases centuries of art history) or that painting must include exploration of material. But we can agree to disagree, this thread is not really for that type of stuff.

I got the letter today from USC. Denied. From everywhere.

Sorry to hear that. I had the same situation last year. All 5 schools I applied to I was rejected. It definitely hurt, but nothing could ever come between me and my artistic convictions and getting into grad school. This last year really made me up my game and really prove myself, not just as an artist, but as a person. It was definitely needed. Most my mentors applied 2, even three time to get in and now I'm amazed by what they are doing. Learn from this and make next year even better and apply to the same schools, it shows them how much you really want it. This year, one year later: one acceptance, one rejection, and two interviews. Best of luck and by all means don't give up! Use it as fuel!!

I really like that you are referencing a very elemental period of art history that spans almost a millennium. It's a very interesting take on such territory. I really like your work, especially Sybil is Bathed and Healed by Nymphs and Martyr. You mentioned in your statement that you combine lengthy stories with your work - awesome. I'd definitely like to read some of your writing.

About a week ago someone posted a link to and organization that provides information on various grants, fellowships and other support for working artists and transitional artists.

I think it was something like the Foundation Center?

Does anyone recall what I am referring to?

I appreciate any help.

Ptsd - yeah, it was foudation center. I think capers (maybe?) posted it a few pages back. Might be on their recent posts in their profile.

I got my official admit letter from the school of art for UCLA, full tuition, non resident compensation and a 18k stipend for the first year. Unreal. Totally freaking unreal. Unsure what the deal is with the second year....

Hi I am a waitlist in RISD 3yr MFA program and the suspense is killing me.

Are you planning on visiting any time before April 15th? if that second year is a sure thing, I am like.. so.. absolutely there. I'm going to email Caron and ask what the deal with second year funding is. I'm trying to keep it cool/not get too emotionally invested yet in case it doesn't work out (like, if there's no 2nd year funding I can't take on ~52 in loans, not with my pre-existing ones from undergrad, you know?)  but damn it's such a cool program and everyone i've talked to is amazing, i love what's going on in LA right now and the faculty just seems super involved with the program but also actively working on their own things, like Cathy Opie has a pretty good show up at Regen right now...

Congrats kwonberry and Erpnope, UCLA is lucky to have you!

To ptsd: it's the Foundation Center, they have locations in cities across the US - access is free at their physical locations.  I also found this database from Duke:  https://researchfunding.duke.edu/.  I'd also check your public library for scholarship and grant resource books.

***Erpnope started the thread MFA Outside Funding Resource List - I'll be this kind of info there from now on.

Congrats on Florida! yeah I received a small amount from Herron as well for VCD... but its in-state for me and there are fellowships to apply for that start the second semester.

It's March 23, 2013 and I can't believe I am still waiting to know if I am in or not.

I applied to Cranbrook for ceramics, got an interview on March 1, 2013 (thought it went well)... but...   ><

Anyone else still waiting?
