Perfect thread to push me to register. All of the programs to which I'm applying fall under these terms; yet, because the nascency of these programs in the US, I am trying to create my own American Studies/Cultural Studies/Critical Theory programs out of existing and well-established departments in addition to applying to a few interdisciplinary departments. The following is a tentative, but slowly becoming exhaustive, list of schools, beginning with programs with these terms in their titles, followed by my own attempts at interdisciplinarity:

NYU -- American Studies

Brown -- American Civilization

Minnesota -- American Studies (with Graduate Minor in Comparative Studies in Discourses/Cultural Studies)

Chicago -- Sociology (with interest in Interdisciplinary Initiative in the Center for the Study of Communication and Society)

Northwestern -- Sociology (clustered with Critical Theory certificate program)

Berkeley -- Sociology (with Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory)

UCLA -- Sociology (with Certificate in Experimental Critical Theory)

CUNY -- Sociology (with Certificate in American Studies)

Potential additions to above list:

Michigan -- American Culture

GWU -- American Studies

What about you, arglooblaha? I'm curious to know what others with these interdisciplinary interests are doing.

NYU - Am Studies

UWyoming - Am Studies

UNC Chapel-Hill - Communications Studies

Potentially/Still Whittling Down

Queen's University - Cultural Studies

Not Totally Off the List But Not Totally On

Stanford - Anthro

Columbia - Anthro

UMichigan - Anthro or Am Studies (leaning towards Am Studies)

UChicago - Anthro

Washington State - Am Studies

UMinn - Comparative Studies in Discrouse

What are you studying?

In the broadest terms: late capitalism; ideology; semiotics; Marxist cultural studies; postmodernity; critical social theory; media studies; production/consumption; political economy of culture/signs.

To be a tad more specific, I'm focusing on discourses (specifically advertising) of late capitalism and neoliberal ideology. For example, I'm working on/finishing up an article with my undergraduate advisor that looks at two recent brand campaigns that emerged during the recession. We analyze articulations and constitution of value and, more importantly, contextualize these discourses within the current state of global capitalism. Probably sounds vague, but I can explain more later.

What about you, what are your research interests?

Yale and Harvard also have Am studies programs. Although, Harvard's is still called Am Civ, but this will soon change to Am Studies.

Also..HI! Best of luck to all of you! Just a few months and this will all be over. Big sigh of relief...

Yes, that is 25. Yes, I am broke. That said, I believe strongly in applying widely in order to get the best funding/opportunities. Each of these schools actually has faculty that I would be happy to work with. This is the list I created after cutting it down from a list of 33 schools that had a substantial number of faculty in the areas I'm studying. I guess some people will think this is cray. I don't. This is partially based on my experience applying to MFA programs. The school that I ultimately attended was one that I added on a whim (it is topped ranked, but I applied there sheerly based off of where it s located--it was four hours away from my parents, and three hours away from where I was living at the time).  I received acceptances from other schools, but after looking into the faculty and opportunities of the university as a whole (after being accepted), I couldn't pass up the institution that I attended for my MFA. All of the above have multiple faculty working in areas that are of interest to me. I'll get picky after I see who is interested in working with me, and what financial packages they offer (also placement ratings, cost of living, ease for my partner to find a job, etc.).

Has anyone heard anything yet? losing my mind just a little over here waiting

Nothing yet, and I've been paying a little too close attention to the results page. Did you apply to American Studies at all of those schools?

I haven't looked at those, but if you search the results from last year, you can get an idea of when various programs notify their applicants. For example, last year people started reporting results from histcon at ucsc on 1/24, ucb rhetoric on 1/28, nyu american stud on 1/31, and stanford mod thought on 2/16 - but some people didn't hear back from those until the end of Feb.

It was American Studies everywhere but Harvard (the Hist. of Am. Civ. program there). Yeah, I too have been watching the results page pretty intently. Minnesota started to contact people on 1/20 last year based off the results search...hence why I've likely been even more impatient than normal recently.

Just Yale and Harvard for American studies here. Barring any disaster ('your application is somehow just cat memes! Get out!') , really not expecting any news from either until late Feb, early March at the earliest.

Hurray! Finally there is some conversation here. So excited to hear that others are applying. I applied to NYU, Yale, and Harvard Am Studies. Harvard is changing their program to Am Studies next year... finally. lol

yeah I'm not expecting to hear from Harvard, Brown, or W&M any time in the near future. The results search just has me hopefully that we'll hear from UMinn, UNC, and UMD within the next 2-3 weeks though...hence the obsession

got a phone call from a Massachusetts phone number today and answered it thinking "well this is odd, but hey who knows?" turns out it was an automated phone call. I don't think I've ever been so furious at a machine

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm also *dying* to hear.

I've applied to the following programs:

Minnesota, American Studies

Michigan, American Studies

U of Pittsburgh, English (Critical and Cultural Studies)

CU Boulder, English

Chicago, English

Vanderbilt, English

Brown, American Studies

Iowa, American Studies

UMass Amherst, Communication

U of Florida, English

I'm also applying to Bowling Green's American Studies program, but won't be sending in that app until next week.

Phigirl: it's so nice to hear that I'm not the only one freaking out over Minnesota and their timeline for acceptances last year!

Good luck all!

I've been nominated for the University Presidential Fellowship at Washington State in the American Studies program, specifically for the Critical Culture, Gender, and Race Studies program. Additionally, received a call inviting me to visit Feb. 6-9th during which I will have dinner with the president of WSU. So, it seems like they are making decisions. This is the first school I've heard from out of the seven I've applied to. My top are University of Denver and Northwestern.

Congrats Saluki! That's awesome. I'd have loved to applied on the west coast but the programs aren't really aligned with my interests-I really hope your visit goes well!
