HGSE Fall 2013

To be safe I think you should aim to get your app in before midnight tonight in your own timezone.

Is anyone absolutely sure of this time zone rule?   I wish I asked HGSE about it back when I still had the chance. I've had people tell me that it's okay for me to submit applications after the EST deadline (since I'm on the West Coast) since most universities will understand, but I've also had people tell me not to risk it...

Submitted!

Thank da lawd.

BTW, just to clarify, everyone has four different things on their "application checklist", right? One slot for each of the three recommendation letters and one slot for their GRE score?

I guess a slot for the TOEFL would exist for International applicants, but I'm a US resident, fwiw.

Thanks in advance!

I also heard it is normal for 3,000 people to apply and they only grant 50 interviews. I fully understand the odds are against me, but I am still hoping!

3000 applications & 50 interviews?! where did you get those stats?  I'm applying for the EdD not EDLD, but I thought the acceptance rate was around 7%.

I applied to the HGSE EDLD program and only to this program because I am really interested in systematic change and it is the only program I found that really addressed this.    Am I the only person freaking out about the whether or not an interview will be granted?? I know the interviews are supposed to be January 31 or February 1. I also heard it is normal for 3,000 people to apply and they only grant 50 interviews. I fully understand the odds are against me, but I am still hoping!    Has anyone here been offered an interview for the HGSE EDLD program? Should I stop worrying about it because I am out of the running? Any help would be fantastic. Thanks.
Me too! I have also heard the same stats. From old posts I think the invites go out in Feb. for the interviews. I did ask the admissions office if we could rest easy after March 1 if we were NOT invited for an interview knowing we weren't admitted, they replied final decisions are not made until we get a response in our email. Best wishes! Here's to hoping we'll be part of the 25 together!

They won't advertise the acceptance rate or GRE avgs of EDLD cohorts. They claim its less about the individual stats and more about cohort dynamics.

Anyone know how many applicants the Prevention Science program typically has as well as how many of those applicants are accepted, on average?

I'm not sure when I got mixed up on that!! I see you are correct. That makes me feel a bit better about not getting invited to interview yet! But now the waiting game has been extended. Any idea as to when the interview invites will be sent out?

I was at 1,499 words for the Ed.D Statement of Purpose. Personally, I found other institution's tighter length requirements more difficult. But, if you're having trouble reaching 1500 words, I would focus on the quality over the length. I'm sure the admissions committee will not mind a concise essay, especially if well-written. I had a professor that would always say, "Exhaust the subject, not the reader." Probably good advice in this case.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Personally, I think the 1500 word limit is more for the benefit of the Ed.D and Ed.LD candidates than the MA ones. As a Master's candidate, I found the 500 word limits at other schools challenging, so I can only imagine how much more difficult it would have been for someone applying at the PhD level with significantly more experience, research interests to describe, etc.

I worked on it and was pretty thoughtful, and my Harvard statement ended up being 1499 words. I felt I answered the questions well and said all I wanted to say, so all is well. What a relief to have it finished, though!

Again, basing this on last year's posts, it was sometime early Feb. I do know the EdLD steering committee meets 2/4 (it's on the website), but not sure if its connected in any way at all. Simply speculation! ;) resume the waiting game!

First, no interviews for EdD, only EdLD.

From what I understand the acceptance rate depends on the concentration, whereby some concentrations have a higher number of applicants than others. While HGSE says they try to take an even number from each concentration, it also in part depends on the number of students each adviser says they can manage. I've read acceptance rates from 6-7% at HGSE on a different websites, too. From what I have been told, 50% of those are people are just applying to Harvard because of the name and/or not really into education. The Admissions Office believes they identify those prospects pretty quickly and toss them. While I do think that there is some sense of pride in selective admissions numbers, I also think the raw number has questionable value, which is really why they don't publish it.

Hey everyone, just wanted to pop in and wish everyone luck! The waiting game sucks, but hopefully connecting with each other will make it more bearable. Hope to see any of you at my program's Open House in the Spring!

Thank you both! It's great to hear from those who are already there!!

Day 1 of the waiting game begins! Happy HGSE games, may the odds be ever in your favor!

I've read that the acceptance rates for Ed. M in EPM is about 50/50 - has anyone heard otherwise?

Also, for those that expressed concern over SOP length, my SOP ended up being around 1800 words - I was an international relations major in my undergrad so it took a little while to explain how I ended up in domestic education policy. I called the admissions office about it and was told they absolutely won't be checking word counts, as long as your essay doesn't appear alarming long (the example the admissions officer used was "don't send us something that's 10 pages long") you should be fine. Hopefully, the person reading my essay agrees........

Thanks! The website does have a published number - 9%. I just don't know if that's the most recent number (from last round of applicants). Do you happen to know which concentrations are more/less selective? I applied for Culture, Communities and Education.

Also, do you think not having interviews hurts the process?

Randi:

Thanks for sharing your insight. I've read a couple of your other post as well and you've written about the importance of "fit" and "matching personalities." Did you get any insight as to how they determine these two criteria after weeding out the soft candidates? I'm curious as to the tipping point(s) of such a selective process.

Acceptance rate for Ed.L.D. is around 1%. Only 25 were selected from over 2,000 applicants. It's an impressive
They only showcase less than half of each cohort online. Do you have any idea if there are any cohort members from the South?

Oh the waiting Game..... I'm looking in to the Ed.L.D as well. Early to mid-Feb is when we hear about interviews. Has anyone that has been on the forum been admitted since the first Cohort?
