Grimm101 Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 I'm not sure if I understand this completely, but I believe funding does not apply to online students. Schools are not required to fund those programs. I think this is why they encourage you to apply for student loans or scholarships/fellowships from other sources. Also, I don't know if online students are considered for GA positions in most programs (I don't know about UW). Please correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, this is one of the reasons I'm sad about the online acceptance. I should have marked "residential ony!"

Anyway, this is one of the reasons I'm sad about the online acceptance. I should have marked "residential ony!" I don't believe we are ineligible for scholarships, but we are ineligible for University Grants because it's a fee-based program (this applies to the whole program not just online). I think we can also get work-study and such too. I wish now that I had marked residential only, but I wanted to give myself the best chance of getting in by marking the "prefer residential, but will take online" option. I'm thinking of asking them if it's possible to transfer to residential after a year. I may still move out there anyway just so I can meet professors, network, join clubs, and take electives on campus. Here is what their website says: Types of Aid As you pay fees and not tuition, types of aid that are not available to fee based students include: Tuition exemptions (any kind) University grants Typically types of aid that are available to fee based students include: Federal grants State grants Scholarships Work Study Loans http://www.washington.edu/students/osfa/graduate/fee.based.html
Grimm101 Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 (edited) Thanks for the information. That is great to know! Still, I wonder if it is far more likely for residential students to receive funding. It seems that the online cohort would be larger and therefore funding becomes highly competitive. I suppose these questions should be posed to the department... As for not marking "residential only," I did the same thing you did for the same reasons. This is what brings me to the conclusion that the online cohort is quite large. Oh well, I will hang in there and wait another 2-3 weeks for possibly funding offers. Edited March 17, 2013 by Grimm101
squeakyboots Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Are there any Canadian students who applied to McGill?
robertdeniro Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Just received email acceptance from Texas. No word on funding offer. Official letter to follow. Have you heard anything about funding yet, Grizbert?
annieca Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Anyone heard about funding at Maryland? It's my top choice but I need funding!
crackerjacktiming Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 (edited) For the Indiana admits: any news on funding yet? I know it's still early, but I'm getting antsy over making a final decision. Good luck to anyone still waiting to hear back! Edited March 20, 2013 by crackerjacktiming
annieca Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 About Indiana funding - I've been asked to apply for scholarships but nothing else. Sorry for the no news-ness!
brunettegal Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Are there any Canadian students who applied to McGill? I applied and was accepted to McGill! Are you thinking of going to McGill?
SeveredLetters Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Anyone heard anything about funding from UNC yet?
Logorrhea224 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Anyone heard anything about funding from UNC yet? I heard from them about a week ago - mine was pretty much entirely loans, though. Hope you have better luck! Has anyone gotten financial info from either U of Washington or Urbana-Champaign yet? I'd really like to make my decision official, but I'm holding out until the financial info comes through.
jkanche Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Anyone heard anything about funding from UNC yet? I'm waiting to hear from them. I emailed the grad admin co-ordinator, she said the admissions committee is going to meet this week, So i guess we would be hearing something soon!?!?
cefran Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I heard from them about a week ago - mine was pretty much entirely loans, though. Hope you have better luck! Has anyone gotten financial info from either U of Washington or Urbana-Champaign yet? I'd really like to make my decision official, but I'm holding out until the financial info comes through. I just spoke with U of Washington on the phone and I asked about financial aid. The financial aid office doesn't send out information until mid-April and it could come before or after the decision deadline. She said, however, that if you accept and then realize you cannot go because of your financial aid package that you can contact them and rescind your acceptance of admission. Is it kosher in grad school land to accept multiple offers because of the time discrepancy between decision deadlines and financial aid information?
Grimm101 Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I spoke with someone at Washington yesterday and they said that scholarship/departmental aid letters go out next week. I'm wondering if the mid April date is in regards to student loans. Also, I asked about transferring from online to residential. She said this was highly unheard of, however we can take residential courses once our "tier" opens up, which can be difficult as they tend to fill up quickly. I don't think it is unheard of to accept two programs and rescind one of the offers at a later date. Logorrhea24, I am also waiting to make my decision between UW and Urbana-Champaign. I haven't heard a peep from Urbana other than a few acceptance e-mails. Have you? Grimm101 1
mepclu Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Anyone heard anything about funding from UNC yet? I was told that they are still working on merit based aid but with no timeline at all. Did anyone else get a UNC acceptance get a notice in their acceptance saying not to accept till you have received an official communication with very important information? I have asked around and no one seems to know a. what this is or b. when this official communication is coming. I don't know if this is standard or what.
squeakyboots Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I applied and was accepted to McGill! Are you thinking of going to McGill? Congrats! I think it's really probable that I'll go. I have to accept it today or else it expires. But I am still waiting on their MPH program, which I don't really think I'll get into.. Are you accepting McGill?

My friend's husband is currently in McGill's MLIS program and he loves it. Did you accept their offer? Have you heard back about the MPH program?
cefran Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Does anyone know if it's possible to get in-state tuition at UMD if you're out-of-state?

Have you heard back about the MPH program? I did accept it. I haven't heard back from the MPH but even if I got it, I think the MLIS program has better career options. It's nice to hear that people love the program I guess we'll be classmates in the fall!

I haven't heard a peep from Urbana other than a few acceptance e-mails. Have you? I haven't heard anything from Illinois either. I received a really nice call from UW telling me to call if I had any questions, but haven't had any contact with Illinois since they e-mailed me to let me know I'd been "officially" accepted by the school (as opposed to recommended for admission by the department). It's good to know that UW is sending out scholarship/departmental aid info next week. Hopefully I'll be able to view my loans and such then, too.
grover3000 Posted March 24, 2013 Author Posted March 24, 2013 Well I'm in at UCLA and UW! I'm already in Seattle but I'm leaning towards UCLA. It's going to be a tough choice and I feel fortunate to have the option to pick between 2 pretty great programs, in my opinion. They're both quality, forward thinking, social justice focused programs so I dunno, like I said it will be tough. I notice a few people got into UW...anyone else considering UCLA? If any UW people have questions about Seattle I would be delighted to offer help if you want!
Sir Frankie Crisp Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I accepted at UIUC. I have been living and working in Urbana since last summer. I'd be happy to answer any questions about the area for those of you considering the program.
garstbrooks Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Does anyone know anything about a student who was originally out-of-state getting in-state tuition at UIUC in the second year of the Masters program? Also, anyone hear anything back about the library grad assistantships at UIUC yet?
LIS Hopeful Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I'll be visiting both CUA & UMD next week & will be incorporating a meeting with a financial aid representative at each place. Hopefully I'll have a much clearer picture of the types of financial assistance available. So here's my perspective on funding at each of these programs: UMD: Visited their financial aid office & was told that determinations regarding loans & work-study would not be made until probably late June. They prioritize undergrad freshman, so until they're done, no info for grads. Spoke with an iSchool academic program specialist regarding assistantships & was told that all positions were awarded through the Career Center, which was surprising to me, since their website states that all iSchool assistantships are awarded through the iSchool's Student Services department. CUA: Most loan & work-study determinations will be made by May 6th deadline. I was strongly encouraged to apply directly to the library & any other departments I may want to work at. In addition, their career services department can help students obtain on- and off-campus employment. Assistantships are usually advertised on their ListServ. I was told that scholarship determinations should be made within the next few weeks. Hope this helps.
cefran Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Sooo, I'm curious. Did anyone on here get interviewed for the Online Learning Assistant position at UW? I think I was supposed to hear back today about who they are hiring, but I haven't heard anything yet.
