qeta Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Wow. This thread is moving so fast I always feel like I left the room with people talking about kittens, and returned in a minute to a conversation about nuclear weapons. Or something like that. I got an email from my POI! He says (among other things) that my application is strong. I know it's no acceptance (yet?), but I'm dancing wild dances of my motherland around my laptop—it's so nice to receive some reassurance after months of silence. Congrats! You got the email that most of us have been refreshing our browsers like mad to get for months. jeudepaume 1
o.j. Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 From what I've been told, professors are all over the map on that one--some like to contact students to tell them they've been accepted (in so many words), some like to reach out once the official notifications have gone out, some don't like to reach out until an offer has been accepted, whatever. I'm sure there are some schools with general guidelines, but I think a lot of it is just personal preference. So I think its when a professor reaches out that is a YAY moment no doubt, but no one should stress who hasn't heard from a POI. Anonymous people keep looking at my LinkedIn profile. I am almost 100% positive the majority are people in my industry but the sudden uptick is, naturally, making me wonder if adcomms are some of the hits. And, then...I become convinced I look like an unintelligent chipmunk in my profile picture that no one would want to accept to any school. Not many people are checking my LinkedIn profile, so I would say that you are probably in good shape. Have you considered upgrading to a paid subscription? ;-)
mv0027 Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Not many people are checking my LinkedIn profile, so I would say that you are probably in good shape. Have you considered upgrading to a paid subscription? ;-) I doubt admission committees look at linkedin profiles. What can you gleam off that that candidates didn't cram into their applications otherwise. My linkedin is just my digital CV. I hope they do though. My biggest mistake was, on several applications, I missed the sections for "awards" and "publications," of which I have several. Now I'm worried they will not even see those (which are listed on my CV) because i'm likely in the first screening of top schools due to a low undergrad GPA. Oh well. Anywho, congrats @jeudepaume. Obviously, don't count your chickens before your eggs hatch, but it would SUPER lame to get that call only to later find out you didn't get in. At this point in the game, I'd say you are in pretty good shape...jealous!
IR IR IR PhD Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I just want to say that on top of the "results search" page, the ASPCA is advertising (i.e. pulling at my heartstrings) with disheveled looking dogs. Like I'm not already upset enough refreshing that page 1000x a day. This is bull shit. Anxiety combined with malnourished puppies = silver_lining and ajaxp91 2
rchlm_618 Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Another day, more anxiety. I hope today is the day you all get good news. I went through the results page and found out when, historically, my schools send out decisions and I've got a few weeks minimum. (deep sigh)
mv0027 Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Colorado, to which I applied, is suppose to announce in January! So glad I'll hear from one school this month!!! sylark 1

sylark Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) Let's hope all three of us get in! (I have a feeling I am going to be waitlisted for no rational reason.) Also, did you hear that Boulder would send decisions from looking at admissions of previous year or did you or someone you know contact them? Thanks in advance. Edited January 22, 2014 by sylark

From past years, from their website, and from admissions (I updated my CV).
silver_lining Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Has anyone claimed the Duke admit? It seems quite early for them to have made decisions already..? The Duke admit stated on the results page that h/she is in the American subfield and that h/she is doing a dual degree with the law school (the comment was marked as spam by someone and taken down). Doesn't seem like a troll, but who knows.

I guess we could recieve a decision anytime within a week from now. *Stops frantically searching Boulder's website and the MyBoulder account to confirm when decisions will be sent*

Targy Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Anyone else feeling anxious/awkward because nominations for a few of Florida State's fellowships are due today? Maybe I'm just too bigheaded, thinking I should get one, haha.
silver_lining Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I saw that as well, but my concern is that, there is no conventional subfield such as "american politics" at the Duke program... Fair point, but people are so used to identifying themselves as American/CP/IR/Theory/Methods that I wouldn't be surprised if he even forgot that Duke organizes subfields differently. Either way, they announced on the 1st last year, so we should be hearing from them soon.
silver_lining Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 a second person got into duke... Just as we were discussing Duke here....
mv0027 Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 One of my rec letter writers is from Duke. For those that might go there, Malesky is DA BOMB. Brilliant academic and great person.
sylark Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I was reading a thread on fake admission result after the several fake A&M results were posted. One of which continues to stay up there since it seems like it could be valid. Odd that it was sandwiched between two fake results within an hour span. Anyway, admins acknowledged the issue of fake results; however, they want to keep anonymity the higher of the two priorities.
astreaux Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 The privacy issue re: results is a concern already. I would not want to make it any easier to connect results/stats with names or other comments unless users choose to be pretty open about all of that. For example, I do not plan to include my GRE/GPA numbers with any of my results until the cycle is over. I think it's important to make those things available for future applicants, but it seems risky to advertise where you have been accepted or rejected to admissions committees that are still making their decisions.

I respect anyone's right to withhold information. I'm big on privacy (e.g. I'm not on facebook or other social medias). I seriously doubt you could do/post anything on here that would impact admissions. At least I hope so! Edited January 22, 2014 by mv0027

This was always my concern too. It is especially problematic if your profile is unique. I think the best thing to do, as a comprise (because we all really want to know people's stats), is to use inequality signs: > or <. For example: lets say I have a 3.42 GPA and 164v 157q. You could put GPA < 3.5 and GRE <165v 160q. Perhaps this could provide enough cover? Also I have no idea if you are even allowed to do this on the submission page. TheGnome Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I don't think there are any incentives in hiding the results from adcom members or preventing them from identifying you. Especially when holding on to more than one offer. I can't imagine a situation where disclosing that information would hurt you (unless you post some really nasty stuff here), but I can imagine a situation where it can help you. On the other hand, there might be a number of reasons why one might prefer anonymity vis-a-vis people other than the adcom members. silver_lining and Poli92 2
sylark Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I personally would never post my GRE scores, GPA, list of schools I have applied, or my current state of residency. That would just be stupid. gretagarbo, wokeem, gradcafe26 and 1 other 4
