I am an international student,  second language n trans-major...... surprised to get a Wisconsin-madison offer yesterday. Have you guys be notified of the form of funding in the letter? And I am also a bit wondering whether the stipend of around 7000 per semester enough for living expenses in madison?  Does anyone have idea?

Does anyone know if Davis are paying for people to attend the recruitment event?

I don't think so. I've been in contact with my poi discussing funding and such. He hasn't mentioned anything but more details ARE on the way regarding the recruitment day. I think since it's just one day and not a weekend they might not pay for it. I could be totally wrong though. I'd email and ask if you need to travel far to get there. I'm just going to be staying with my best friend who lives in Sacramento and driving up the night before after work.

Did anyone hear from Brandeis?

I haven't heard anything and have gotten a couple acceptances from other places. Based on the results board, it seems that they sometimes conduct phone interviews. I wonder if they will do the same this year?

Thanks, that's the impression I got as well. I live in London, so without any travel assistance to make a dent in the $1000 flight it's unlikely I can be there.

Has he revealed anything re funding? My POI directed me to the grad coordinator with questions, but no answers yet other than await official offer letter in the post...

I was told that the department only "guarantees" 4 years of funding but that they are typically able to provide funding for up to 6 years maximum. However, it should be noted that this is only funding for the academic year, September-June. Summer funding isn't provided from what I can tell.

A ton of Princeton rejections rolled out today.

There still haven't been that many Berkeley acceptances posted... Do you think there'll be a second round of admits sent out today?

Anyone want to claim Penn State?

I'll claim Penn State. It came as a shock since it wasn't even among my top choices, but they made it really appealing and told me about some awesome programs.

They still haven't drafted up my acceptance letter, but she mentioned they'd hopefully be sent out this week. So, watch for those.

I got an e-mail from a school today saying that the professor I was interested in no longer studies what I want to study. He's a big name, but the program isn't top 20 or anything so it was kind of my of my more realistic to actually be accepted applications. They e-mailed to ask if I was still interested in the program, since they know mentors are important. (Well, my fault too for not e-mailing him before applying!)

On the plus side, it's still a joint Women's Studies and Sociology program, which none of the others I'm applying to are. And I had named one other professor that at least worked sort of in a similar area.

I mean, I already did the application, paid for everything, but it's true I wouldn't want to keep my application active if I'm not going to consider going if I got accepted. It's hard though. I'll have to look more into the program again with this in mind. It's nice the program e-mailed me at least.

Ugh, it's just a shame, because out of the other programs I still haven't heard back from, two are very likely that I'll be rejected, one is a master's program, and the last one is this PhD program. So I have to think hard about it.

Hi all!

I haven't posted to this thread yet!

I am getting super nervous I haven't been accepted anywhere yet...but I have also yet to receive an official rejection.

Just wanted to say Hi! and GOOD LUCK to everyone!

Hello everyone,

It has been so much fun reading your posts, knowing I am not in this alone!! It is so great to be here =)

I started off as a high school dropout; I had to leave high school for medical reasons.  I received my GED just months after my peers graduated.  I fell in love with sociology when I took 101 as a biology major.  Understandably, one of my favorite areas of sociology is medical sociology.  My other interests include sociology of religion, gender, and reproduction.

I completed my undergraduate education this past December 2013 with a combined GPA of 3.94 from both colleges (3.88 at community college, 3.97 at the four-year college).  I completed an undergraduate honors thesis to earn departmental honors in sociology.

As for GRE scores, I received a 164 (93rd percentile) in Verbal, a 152 (49th percentile) in Quantitative, and a 4 (53rd percentile) in Analytical Writing.  I know the quantitative score is a bit low, but I can't be too hard on myself, though, (I'll leave that to the admissions boards) considering my practice tests started me out in the 20th percentile.

I am blessed that none of the schools required a page limit for the writing sample portion of the application.  I just submitted my thesis as my writing sample.  I am also lucky to have had some stellar letters of recommendation from my thesis committee who can vouch for my quantitative abilities that the GRE score does not reflect.

Here are the schools I've applied to:

- Lehigh University, PA

- University of Delaware

- University of Maryland

You may be asking: "Medical Sociology?  Where's Brandeis in that list?!?"  Brandeis is my dream school!!  However, it is imperative I stay as close to home as possible at this time, for personal family reasons.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you  :)

PS - if any of you will be there, I will be attending the Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS) winter meeting in Nashville next week, and I will also be attending the Eastern Sociological Society (ESS) winter meeting in Baltimore from February 20-23.

I am presenting at SWS this weekend and at ESS. What are the titles of your papers?

That is Very exciting! She is! I am interested in Gender and Sexuality and social problems, so she wouldn't be my top choice POI there but I would def still love to work with her!

My good friend will be at a table that same time at SWS, but I'll try to swing by your table as well because your research sounds SO great!!

Unfortunately, I can't attend your presentation at ESS because I'll be at a reception for the Repro Mini-Conference ... but your second paper sounds amazing as well!

I'm glad, too!! It's so great to meet you!  Cylon6 is also attending ESS!

That's so great to hear about your interest in Ann Bell, too!  Hey, that's ok that she's not your first choice, I understand!  I think UDel has so many great people with distinct specializations!! :D

I'm a international student who is doing my mphil in uk in sociology. I also applied to duke brown Johns Hopkins Princeton ucla uci. My stats: V: 720, Q: 800, AW: 3.0. I took the GRE three years ago. I know AW is my weakness. My TOEFL is 113. My undergrad GPA is 3.77, my mphil grade is 62, here in uk 70 is a distinction and it's difficult to get 70 in sociology. No publications but loads of RA experience. My research interests are demography, health, family, aging and inequality. I didn't see many international students got admitted yet, maybe they are not on this website.

I am an international student on the website :) I went to undergrad in the US though. Good luck!! You seem like a very strong candidate. Stay positive  :)

No, I show up as "Submitted - Pending Decision"

Good to know, thanks mormlib!  :)  Another quick question- did you contact anyone at the school aside from sending in your application?
