BTKOU Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I didn't get a phone call, but an email. MY POI said I was on the shortlist and told me what the typical funding package was if I was accepted. I do not know if this is something to prepare for or not, but I am expecting to be asked about my research, goals, and why Cincinnati.
kingharvest Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Got an email (at 11:00pm on a Friday ) saying I'd been selected for the interview shortlist at Michigan. Furcifera and Conscia Fati 2
Marcus_Tullius Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Out of interest, to the archaeologists here, how much field experience do you have? i was worried about my app since I have very limited experience (you Americans get so much more opportunity you know!)
ScipioAfricanus Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Got an email (at 11:00pm on a Friday ) saying I'd been selected for the interview shortlist at Michigan. Congrats! Out of curiosity, who did you get the email from?
rkg2012 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Hi, all. New poster here. Chimed in to say that I received a call from U. Cincinnati yesterday offering to fly me out for their prospective graduate student weekend in late February. The professor who called me specifically said it wasn't an interview, but more of a visit to see if everything meshed well. It's a 3 day visit...does anyone know what I can expect from them at this non-interview? Also, did anyone receive a notification for a more formal interview? Thanks! In past years, shortlisted applicants were invited for a weekend, which was basically all about competition for funding. I don't have first hand experience, but it sounded like a lot of people were caught off guard and not 100% pleasant to each other. Best of luck to all of you attending.

I only had one (rather short) season before getting into several PhD programs, but it was a reasonably intensive season and came with an awesome recommendation. You need some experience to prove that you can cut it in the field, but I don't think it has to be that extensive. I'd hesitate to say that Americans have a lot more excavation opportunities. I have a number of British/Italian/German friends who had lots of opportunities with some funding as undergrads and several had an excavation component/requirement for their degree. It's a lot more expensive for us to fly to the Mediterranean and even some of the top universities only have limited funding for their undergraduates to pursue fieldwork.
kingharvest Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Congrats! Out of curiosity, who did you get the email from? Fortson, the DGS.

The extent of my experience was one week in the field! Still can't complain as it's got me a couple of interviews and an acceptance so far.
ἠφανισμένος Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 Congrats to the WUSTL admits! And to the UMN admit as well; if you're out there, feel free to PM me. I'd be interested to hear your take on the program.
falernian Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I was one of the WUSTL acceptances! Really excited, they're my second-choice program. A bit dismayed to hear UGA's already sent out a few, as they're solidly my favorite. Hoping there's a possibility of being waitlisted? Furcifera 1
ἠφανισμένος Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 I'm wondering if UGA still has a few first-round admits left. They've never notified that early, at least according to the results board, and they tend to use the postal service rather than email. So at the very least I'm pretty sure we've got a shot at the waitlist.
Uroogla Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Seems like I should probably start looking for jobs, at this rate.
Statianus Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I have to say that this application process is weird and surprising and agonising. I am interviewing with Harvard and Yale, but not Michigan, Illinois or Chicago. It doesn't even seem about fit. It's just random. Congratulations to all who have received good news; to the rest, just take note that the selection process can be unpredictable.
kingharvest Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Agreed, at least for me (Homer + Ancient Near East), Michigan and Harvard seem complementary. And Chicago seems like the most obvious place for me with the PAMW track...
kingharvest Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Also, how are people's interviews going? I feel like mine with Michigan went half ok and half shitty. I felt like I answered all of their questions about why I would fit in at Michigan well (also we ended up talking about Vonnegut and American Hustle for about half the interview), but I think my nervousness caught up to me when they asked about my research interests, and I didn't explain my ideas very well/in an easy to follow manner.

Who interviewed you? I just had mine - Terranato and Nevett. Not sure it went brilliantly - I love the program at Michigan but there aren't really Faculty in my area still pleased to have got to the interviews.
Uroogla Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Out of curiosity, is anyone willing to claim the Kansas admit?
Furcifera Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 That's me! Prof. Corbeill emailed me this morning. I'm pretty ridiculously excited. Doubly so because it's my first piece of good news this season. ἠφανισμένος and Conscia Fati 2
Posidonia Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 (edited) Congrats to all with acceptances and interviews so far! I just wanted to chime in and second/third/fourth all the people who have had mysterious results in this cycle so far -- I too have gotten acceptances from surprising places, but only silence from others that I thought were better fits. However an undergrad mentor of mine reminds me that academic merit or intellectual fit are often only two of many factors in play. Sometimes, counterintuitively, an adcomm sees where a strong applicant has applied and rejects them because they think they have no chance of getting him/her. And then, sometimes, there's politics, whether between individual professors or even departments; you never know if one of your recommenders has had a tiff with someone at the place you're applying to. So, bottom line is when things get confusing, it can just as often be about them rather than about you. While that's definitely frustrating if it means you're prevented from attending a top choice program, it doesn't mean at all you won't be successful in the long run, which is what ultimately matters. janeiro Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Anyone else receive a phone call from Michigan today? It was from Prof. Fortson, but I was unable to return it before he left for the day.
Serenus Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Anyone else receive a phone call from Michigan today? It was from Prof. Fortson, but I was unable to return it before he left for the day. I did. He called me to invite me to their visit weekend in March. He didn't mention anything about an interview beforehand, just that they'd like me to come. janeiro 1
Melian4 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Hi everyone -- I was wondering if anyone applied to ISAW this year?
