michelle sumaray Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Someone posted this last year. Hope it helps and best of luck to everyone on their interviews! Here is a link to the thread and I pasted some of the questions below. That's extremely helpful. Thank you!
bannedinbc Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I'm pretty sure this needs to be posted at least once a year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2-5kYWrp8A
Loric Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Hennessey is my new favorite person. "If you're a particularly unentertaining artist, offer adderall to visitors forced to listen to your self indulgent prattle."
soapeater Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Useless Trivia: Hennessey's is the voice behind the "do the harlem shake" videos. Also, He (Jayson Musson) received his MFA in painting at the University of Pennsylvania.
Kelly Anna Yllek Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Having been contacted so soon after applying has its draw backs of knowing I still won't hear if I'm accepted or not until another month+ from now.
meese Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Is anyone having slideroom problems? For some reason, one recommender hasn't gotten one email from them (the temple one), and another swears he's submitted one for MICA, but it hasn't gone through. Now the second one is kinda adhd, so I'm taking it with a grain of salt. But the first recommender is pretty trustworthy
Loric Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 My experience has been that things dont always update right away. Contact your admissions rep and see if they can see it.
kafralal Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 Is anyone having slideroom problems? For some reason, one recommender hasn't gotten one email from them (the temple one), and another swears he's submitted one for MICA, but it hasn't gone through. Now the second one is kinda adhd, so I'm taking it with a grain of salt. But the first recommender is pretty trustworthy I had to resend requests a number of times, because recommenders either didn't get them or couldn't find them. I just assumed it had something to do with SPAM filters. It happened with systems other than slideroom as well. No problem with actual recommendation submissions though.
Loric Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 I did some poking around to see how slideroom "works" when viewed by the staff. It's a little troubling. Long story short, those little essays they let you write about each slide can be "optionally" viewed.. meaning often they're going purely off the image and have no context. For some things.. fine, i get that. For others...? WHAT?!?! If you're going to accept things other than basic 2D media you should really tell your staff to read the supplemental information for each slide. Kelly Anna Yllek 1
meese Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Well, I hope they read my little essays, otherwise my series is gonna look like a bunch of tree roots and other such tree detritus.

It happened with systems other than slideroom as well. No problem with actual recommendation submissions though. The Temple lady seems cool with my professor sending it to her. Which is great, because the due date has since passed. I don't think it went to his spam filter, because he filled out the other three slideroom things. I need to contact the MICA rep though. Just to see what I can do with the adhd professor. I swear, he's like a living distraction, but great in his field.

So that's why my POI described pieces of my portfolio instead of just saying the name of it. Ugh. That is awful if they don't just get it all.
Loric Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 This also goes back to when there were legit portfolio showings.. you were there to answer questions. Not that you could "speak for" your work - it needs to stand on its own, but a performance piece has about zero ground to stand on when you have a single snapped photo of the thing to show for it in a portfolio.
Firenze Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Email from University of Chicago yesterday. Invitation to critiques and an interview. Congrats on the interview and thanks for posting this. Now I know I can probably cross the U of Chicago off my list. Ah well, they were a bit too interdisciplinary for me, anyway. I just hope I get in a good program somewhere. All it takes is one Yes!
Rother Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Hello, Been stalking the board for awhile, just joined today. I applied to nine school with my photography portfolio. Haven't heard anything from anyone yet. How do I ad the footnote to my profile, so I can list the schools and keep it updated?
Kelly Anna Yllek Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 ^^^ To change your little info at the bottom of posts its just the 'signature' info for your profile. You can change it at the top of the page by changing your settings. How accurate is the Peterson's acceptance rate info? It feels right for the stats I know for UO's art department but if the Folklore department stats are right I feel a whole lot better about this coming Fall
meese Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Finished up the last application to UF. All there is now is to pray the recommendations get in, and the transcripts get to where they need to be .... The anticipation is killing me Moreso with the competition....
Loric Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) Tonight I'm convinced I'm not getting an acceptance. And I'm mad about it. Then I'm sure I will get an admit with no funding which I'm even angrier about. Then I'm sure I'll get an admit with "meh" funding and not be able to pull things together financially to attend and forfeit by default. This makes me want to throat punch kittens. No table unflipped type Hulk rage. Today I was told after surgery that if I don't lower my stress levels it's going to eventually kill me, as it's already detrimental to my health. Le sigh. klp Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Good luck Loric and hope your surgery went well; maybe you need to look into meditation or affirmations to de-stress. I have an affirmation I've been repeating for myself that goes "Let go, and trust the Universe" -- and it was working great until I de-stressed a little bit too much and took my eye off the ball after 5 late night, very-similar-yet-minutely-different-to-keep-you-on-your-toes applications. I discovered over the weekend that I somehow didn't press the submit button for Columbia, after being 5 days early to fill in the reams of forms, uploading 20 portfolio pieces, writing a few hundred words on each piece, and getting glowing recommendations sent. They've told me to think about applying again next year. Kick. Teeth. On the positive side, I could never have afforded it, and that's one less option to feel nervous about! I'm also now super careful about my remaining applications. Repeat this mentally ten times, even if you don't believe it. It will make you feel a little less anxious: Let go, and trust the Universe Let go, and trust the Universe Let go, and trust the Universe Let go, and trust the Universe Let go, and trust the Universe Let go, and trust the Universe Let go, and trust the Universe Let go, and trust the Universe Let go, and trust the Universe Let go, and trust the Universe And after you've de-stressed, get out there and make some more work so that when you get an interview, you can show them stuff you've been working on since you sent in your application.
Kelly Anna Yllek Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Loric, much like klp suggests: Let it go. All your materials are handed in and its submitted. The best you can do is not worry about it. It will either happen or not. Don't give up or anything but there isn't much else you can do now. Relax and wait.
Loric Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Well, I hope they read my little essays, otherwise my series is gonna look like a bunch of tree roots and other such tree detritus. Mine looks like an elaborate toga party near a strange swimming pool. For fun we should all say what our portfolio looks like with zero context based just on the images.
Loric Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I also love how slideroom requires an answer to size, format, etc even if it's not relevant. Further, faculty doesn't see that answer unless they toggle it on - so it is truly 95% pointless.
Loric Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I was describing the media for one piece.. "Let's see.. Acrylic, water color, gemstone powder in flow medium, gauche, steel, copper, balsa, nylon, polyest... Polyest.. What? What do you mean there's a character limit?!?!? *deletedeletedelete* STUFF. No, that sounds way unprofessional. Mixed Media. Done."
