Do archaeology subdivisions interview? Any idea?

I think it depends on the school & the program.

Posted

I have to assume many schools like Yale, NYU, Columbia are making up for a day or two lost, but even so, we aren't historically going to hear until later. The last couple years on the results page have the bulk of notifications going out in mid-February until mid-March, so it is still quite early. Interview requests usually don't go out until, earliest, late-January, and that was really just Emory and Duke last year...

Not that I have been looking this stuff up.  I totally have other stuff to do.

NYU is on winter break until after Jan 27 so I assume committee meetings won't happen until then.  Last year, once the process started it moved very quickly, though. CUNY didn't do any kind of committee meetings until end of Feb. Hope this helps :)

Noticed someone posted they got an email from Virginia about the adcom meeting tomorrow!

Was this email sent to just the shortlisted candidates?

Sharalaxp - that was me on UVA. I got the email because they didn't have my official transcripts. Asked if I could send scanned copies as the committee was meeting tomorrow. I doubt that means short list but then again why bother if I didn't have a shot.

Yes, that certainly does sound like a good sign! I applied to UVA as well, but haven't heard anything from them.. ;(

I hope so. My advisor thought it was. But I don't want to get over excited when it could just be that everyone who didn't send official transcripts got the email.

Did you send official transcripts in?

I think I only uploaded the BA & MA transcripts as PDFs. So I think your advisor is right!

Well, I hope so! At this point I find it hard to remember who wanted what transcript types and other information.

On another note - if the adcomm meets tomorrow does that mean, interviews/acceptance/rejections are soon to follow? Now I am getting anxious.

Hello everyone! I have a question for everyone in this waiting game for anthropology: I am a PhD applicant with interest in archaeology. I applied to UCLA (cotsen) , Stony Brook, Boston, Pittsburgh, Arizona University, stanford (not going to happen), and chicago (also not going to happen-, i will sacrifice my little finger if that works out)

My worry are my GRE scores, or more so my quantitative score that was abysmal ;( - my first GRE it was the same situation reversed. I sent in both scores. my GPA is alright, 3.56 and 3.58 (BA, MA).

During the last week of December i got an informal email from Stony Brook that invited me to visit the campus before admission decisions are made, and that they will cover some of the travel expenses. I went, and it was very different than i imagined. They asked questions like " So , will you have trouble finding excavations by yourself", "do you have anyone to stay with in Turkey", "do you need help in this and that are" ....questions like that....no one really asked me about what i actually want to do..they were very specific questions like that. I met with 3 faculty members and i was introduced to a bunch of graduate students.
Does anyone know anything about this university? Is this a good sign? I cant even tell if it was an interview or what, but i DO know that the committee has not formally met yet, so that cant be a good sign....I dont know what to think since i have NEVER heard of an invitation like this.

Any input will we greatly appreciated. I just dont think i can get in anywhere because of my GRE..... I have lost all hope already

Daisy-

Please take a deep breath. I see you posted a similar inquiry 4 places, and it seems that you are freaking out. Don't get too much in your own head and overthink things. Anthro programs don't care much about the GRE so you'll probably be fine, and since there's nothing you can do about it now anyway, worrying won't help.

Secondly, I think that visit offer is an AMAZINGLY GOOD sign from Stony Brook. I know friends there and that is a strong and competitive program. Do you honestly think that they (or any anthro program, for that matter) could POSSIBLY afford to offer money to visit to all or even a quarter of their applicants? No. Nope. Nope times a million. Programs only do that for their very top candidates. If the committee hasn't officially met yet, I would assume it could be because your POI there is really interested and planning to fight for you. And that was DEFINITELY an interview. Any time you meet with a POI it is an interview, even if it is casual, even if you arrange it. They are going to spend that conversation evaluating whether you'd be a good addition to their program regardless of the situation. In regards to the questions they asked, it sounds to me like they are trying to figure out funding perhaps? Or maybe they want to know the feasibility of your SoP? I don't know why they asked the questions they asked, but I'm sure they asked them because you are a compelling candidate and they needed to know the answers before they made a final admit/reject decision.

Additionally, getting an interview/partially paid visit at one school means that you were in the top of their applicants and so you've got a good chance at your other schools too. Congratulations! You are officially a strong contender! Now seriously, try to calm down. I know it's easier said than done, but stressing out is only going to make you miserable. It won't change anything.

Jump- at least at my undergrad, I know the anthro department only as on official committee once or maybe twice. Usually the profs were given everyone's material to review, and then they ranked their top choices before the committee meeting. At the meeting, they basically made their decisions. Does UVA usually interview? If so, they may be meeting to decide who to invite to interview. Either way, hopefully you'll hear soon! But if not, don't get stressed. Even if they have made decisions, anthropologists seem to be terrible at sending out official e-mails in any sort of timely manner. Best of luck!

Do archaeology subdivisions interview? Any idea?

I applied to a good number of programs, and didn't interview with any. I'm not sure whether any of my friends, coworkers, et al. ever interviewed either, although some visited programs in person. All I did was contact my POIs, and kept in touch as I (we?) saw fit.

I was just looking back through last year's results thread and it seems like things started picking up around the equivalent of next week.

I can't believe how torturous the wait really is... I really thought I was going to be ok, and that finishing my classes would allow me to keep my head in the books and out of the clouds.

But anyway, for those of you who applied last year and are still hanging out in here, thanks for a good read! :)

hey, so I am curious if anyone knows anything about who is on the admissions committee at Berkeley this year. according to a professor who helped me extensively with my application, Berkeley rotates the professors on the committee every year, which makes it the luck of the draw who gets to see your application and if they are in your field.

just wondering if anyone had any more info on this. thanx!

Got an invite to travel to NY for an interview at the AMNH - so excited!!!!

The program is technically the Biology program and it seems like bio programs are contacting earlier than anthro program... Here's hoping we all start hearing news for our various anthro programs soon :)
