ToomuchLes Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Thanks everyone! You'll still definitely see me around these forums.  @stillalivetui, can I PM you a few questions about your time at IU? I also have some questions about convenient places to live, and other pertinent topics.Â

IvanBezdomnii Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Waitlisted at Toronto. That completes my cycle. 3 waitlists and 3 rejections. MEH!
SunshineLolipops Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 0 for 6. Thanks for all of the support everyone, and congratulations to everyone who got better news. The sense of community here was by far the best part of the process. Gambaosaka1 and ellebe 2
IvanBezdomnii Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 If any international applicants turn down Toronto or anyone at all turns down Georgetown, please let me know.
Sigaba Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 0 for 6. Thanks for all of the support everyone, and congratulations to everyone who got better news. The sense of community here was by far the best part of the process.  @JJWS, look me up if you decide you want to give it another go. We could put together a long range plan (picking schools, reaching out to potential PoI's, improving your mastery of the relevant historiography) and/or I would be more than happy to offer short range support on your writing sample and SoP. SunshineLolipops and TMP 2
Conmel Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 0 for 6. Thanks for all of the support everyone, and congratulations to everyone who got better news. The sense of community here was by far the best part of the process. Â That was me this time last year - 0 out of 6. It took me months to get over the disappointment. However, I took another shot at it this year (albeit with applcations to a bunch a different universities on a different continent). So far have received acceptances for every application. So keep your head up! SunshineLolipops and Ritwik 2
anthrohis7092 Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 If any international applicants turn down Toronto or anyone at all turns down Georgetown, please let me know. I will be turning down Toronto tomorrow. I decided not to leave the US after all.
scirefaciat Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Ivan, I really hope you get that call from Toronto! Â Good luck!
dr. t Posted March 27, 2015 Author Posted March 27, 2015 (edited) "I write to give you an update on your application to the PhD program in History at the University of Toronto. We were EXTREMELY impressed by your application, which combined what many of us thought to be an important and interesting project with an impressive and unique background. It goes without saying that the University of Toronto would be a wonderful place to pursue your research, particularly given our depth and strength in Asian history. As Graduate Coordinator, I read all the PhD applications, so I can say with confidence that your application and proposal really jumped out. Unfortunately, because we are a public university, the Ontario provincial government sets extremely strict limits on the number of international students we can accept each year. This rule forces us to turn away many quite brilliant applicants who we would otherwise love to admit."  Uh, liiiiiiiitle problem. So much for a personalized email. (Waitlisted, btw) Edited March 27, 2015 by telkanuru

scirefaciat Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 That is super awkward :/ Â If I were that professor, I would be mortified right now.

IvanBezdomnii Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Clearly a case of copy and paste gone wrong...
Magellan1521 Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Congratulations to everyone who got in, and good luck to those applying in the next cycle. If anyone is going to Hopkins, shoot me a message.Â
twentysix Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 That is super awkward :/ Â If I were that professor, I would be mortified right now. Â Yeah, I'm sure he/she doesn't care at all. People on grad cafe are way too high strung about little mistakes. poliorkein and Professor Plum 2
alpheratz Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 Ugh, I still haven't officially heard back from half the schools I applied to. Â I'm in waitlist purgatory at Stanford, and I assume that's a polite rejection. Â I'm resisting the very strong temptation to follow up with an updated transcript and CV, because I've heard that's faux pas because no one wants to go through extra materials. Â Still, it's hard to be patient. Â UVA and Hopkins haven't gotten back to me at all, and nothing has changed on my application pages on their websites. Â I assume those are rejections as well, but I just want to know definitively so I can move forward. Â When should I contact them and ask? Â </vent>

dr. t Posted March 29, 2015 Author Posted March 29, 2015 Yeah, I'm sure he/she doesn't care at all.  I wouldn't disagree. That's why I found it annoying.
Heimat Historian Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 I've decided to attend the University of Iowa in the fall.  My application season is completed and I couldn't be more excited. danwaterfield, jayray11, Gambaosaka1 and 7 others 10
ashiepoo72 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 (edited) Congrats Heimat. I'm so happy for you. Sounds like Iowa is the best program for you, and I can't wait to hear what great things you do there Edited March 30, 2015 by ashiepoo72 Heimat Historian 1
