bambi_86 Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 The thing about these emails is that they never come when you're checking the hardest. I just glanced at my phone quickly last night before going to bed thinking I had gotten some random ad email and it was my POI congratulating me on my admission. Kloppo Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 The thing about these emails is that they never come when you're checking the hardest. I just glanced at my phone quickly last night before going to bed thinking I had gotten some random ad email and it was my POI congratulating me on my admission. Wow..Congratulations. On topic, I just did something I promised myself I wasnt going to do but finally gave-in as a result of the anxiety that comes with this tedious wait; I emailed my POI about the status of my application which reads 'Being Reviewed by the Faculty' and he responded with a rather casual "Thanks for the update"..Does anyone think the reply was too casual and does it suggest denial or am I looking too much into the whole thing?
MathCat Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Despite setting up my university email to forward to my other email so that I get notifications on my phone, I still manually refresh my email from time to time. It makes no sense, but I can't stop myself. Ahh!!

I just glanced at my phone quickly last night before going to bed thinking I had gotten some random ad email and it was my POI congratulating me on my admission. Congratulations! That must have been a nice surprise! Are you still waiting to hear back from any other programs? I finally received an email from a school today, but it was only to inform that my file was submitted to the committee for review today. I'm sure the news will only encourage me to increase the number of times I check per day. It feels like an itch that I just can't scratch enough times.

Thank you very much! Just in general -- I think that all of us, regardless of our situation, are probably looking too much into a lot of things about this process...I even googled to check whether the school I eventually got into had had any snow days recently in case that would have been the reason for my slightly delayed response.

I'm sure the news will only encourage me to increase the number of times I check per day. It feels like an itch that I just can't scratch enough times. Thank you very much! Yes I am waiting on three programs still, only one of which I think I have a realistic chance at. But given how nice the professors at the program I got admitted to have been in welcoming me and telling me about the academic environment they will provide, I can't see how I could choose any other place. Wish I could tell you of a way to get rid of that itch but I think it might be inevitable. Only way is probably to ask other people to take your computer and phone away... Mr. Impatiently Waiting 1
Mr. Impatiently Waiting Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 Every time I check my email and there isn't a decision a little part of me dies. mikibene 1

Hahaha checking the weather is brilliant! If only the schools knew how much we go through during this process...
thepinkdragon76 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 (edited) Even though I know typically regular MSW candidates don't get notification until March and April, I still check my email and the portal several times a day. The past two days it's been worse because we are buying a house, I'm applying for a scholarship and am waiting for a response about a technical issue for the application and well, I just can't stop hitting refresh. On the bright side, we got the house and close on March 20th. I hope I get a decision before then! Edited February 25, 2015 by thepinkdragon76
Mr. Impatiently Waiting Posted February 27, 2015 Author Posted February 27, 2015 I am going to try to find the willpower to make it through this weekend without checking my email more than once per day... and by day I mean hour.
sleepyjoey Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 I literally check my email about every 20 minutes.
FoggyAnhinga Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 More times than I could count lol - probably more times than I blink my eye per day (okay that might be an overstatement haha).
Wullbluomen Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 I'm the exact opposite -- I'm too anxious to check my email, so I put it off day by day. Of course, this makes my anxiety worse, which makes me even more afraid of checking my email, resulting in a feedback loop spiralling down into Hades! If anybody has ideas or coping mechanisms to share, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Wullbluomen Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Hm... If you get push notifications on any mobile device / tablet you may own, the checking will be out of your hands! That's a good suggestion, but my cellphone can't access the internet and hates receiving messages from my email service! I'm out of the loop when it comes to mobile technology.
HistoryGypsy Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Every time lately that I get an email from someone that isn't from a university, I get really irritated and have to fight the desire to smash down the 'delete' key. Yeesh, can't these last three programs just make up their minds already??? thepinkdragon76, ImHis and wildernessgirl 3

Yeesh, can't these last three programs just make up their minds already??? Same here - I received a push notification on my phone's gmail app and I excitedly clicked it, only to see that it was a promotional email advertising a coupon the next time I go to this certain restaurant or wherever. It was VERY annoying...

Yeesh, can't these last three programs just make up their minds already??? This is me. "A ding!? Check it now!!! Ugh it's just (seminar info, email from student, email about graduation, email from PI) this isn't important!!!" (It's totally important just not what I care to get in my email inbox right now)
Hani2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 i can't count. sometimes when i want to check it said " updated just now "
Mr. Impatiently Waiting Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 So I made it through the weekend without checking my email or portal more than once per day! I was finally starting to be at peace with the experience and then I got a text last night from a student in the department asking me if I have heard anything yet. Now I'm back to my regular old email addiction.
FoggyAnhinga Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I probably will check twice more now until I hear anything than in previous months since it's March lol...
thepinkdragon76 Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I can't stop checking. I know I'll be notified by email, but I'm so sick of waiting. My life is moving all sorts of directions right now and I really don't have the time to sit around and try to plan around an unknown. It's pissing me off, like I don't have other things to do with my time than wait and obsess over this crap. Ugh. Mr. Impatiently Waiting 1
Perhaps Later Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 (edited) I don't count but I do check a lot. Being 10 and a half hours ahead of EST means I end up checking my emails very frequently in the night, because of which I lose sleep. Edited March 3, 2015 by Perhaps Later
PhDEducation Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Not just the email constantly open but refreshing the schools portal, 2 of the 3 schools I have left my top choices have status Forwarded to department for review Under Review Those def get refreshed 30-40 times a day haha. thepinkdragon76 1
