To be honest, five to six years of funded school sounds like a cake walk. At the very least, it'll be easier than what I'm finishing now.  The only thing I can imagine being more difficult than what I have been doing is finishing a college degree as a single parent. I have incredible respect for anyone who can pull that off.

I will say doing what you did will feel like nothing for you since you have already overcome a lot and matured a ton through your schooling.  There are a lot of people who struggle in graduate school yet, namely those straight out of undergrad, since they have not endured obstacles and difficulty in academics up to this point and are used to the "undergrad" mentality of school.  You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders.  Best of luck!

My advice is to prepare as if it will be stressful, but the faculty at UVA are so friendly that you will probably enjoy most of your faculty interviews. I had a great time meeting with the faculty as they did not ask questions that were malicious. They also may get back to you quickly for acceptances. I was accepted about a week after the interview weekend!

Just curious how in-depth everyone is researching their POIs past work. I know they do not expect applicants to be experts in the field, but you still have to show some sort of proficiency. Briefly read last 2-3 publications? Read reviews of the topic to better understand the field? Merely gaze over abstracts?

Reading over at least a few abstracts and looking up stuff that's over your head should be sufficient. From my experience, PIs tend to talk more about stuff they're working on now, and they want to have a scientific conversation with you. They want to know you can keep up and that you can think like a scientist. They don't expect you to know their research well, but they do expect you to be able to converse with them.

Yes I am still waiting, but the administrator Leanne Norderman is unresponsive to emails. Just saw another thread where she has replied to someone and said UCSD is still reviewing applications. Good luck..

I just got a call from Columbia, MO. I thought it was Mizzou calling but it was just an automated telemarketer phone call telling me my credit card is not endangered but I should enter my card number just in case to verify.
