I know what you mean about developing self-esteem and having that majorly challenged by this process. I've never felt more vulnerable! One thing I've told myself is that it takes a lot of courage to put myself out there at all. I'm guessing that if you're anything like me, there were points along the way where you nearly gave up. And lots of people did. But you didn't! It's definitely not the end, don't count yourself out, and ultimately this experience will hopefully help build character/confidence/self-esteem, because you WILL get through it!!! Thank you for your kind words, Cowsy! You're right about the part about having the courage to put yourself out there. I am proud of myself for taking risks and going out of my comfort zone to pursue something I truly wanted instead of playing it safe. And everyone on here should be too. Yesterday I gave myself permission to cry and feel sad, rejected, deceived, and, frankly, a little bit angry. I felt it really helped to sit with those feelings because today I feel ready to let them go and move forward. Also, your comment about vulnerability reminded me of this quote by Scott Peck: “There can be no vulnerability without risk; there can be no community without vulnerability; there can be no peace, and ultimately no life, without community.” If you haven't yet, I hope you hear good news soon! If not, we'll just keep trying and take pride in what we have already accomplished. Edit: I just saw you have been accepted to U of O. CONGRATS, you deserve it! The date on the "complete and ready for review" part will always be the day that you're looking at it (I know because I've checked it every day since lol) so I don't think they've started reviewing yet, but maybe they have and the status just hasn't changed to "in review". From the looks of the forums it seems like they're usually pretty late in sending out decisions. Oh okay. I'm getting anxious. It seems like this forum is getting a lot of activity but so far I've only heard back from 3/12 schools. I hope next week some schools start sending out decisions.

And what a great perspective you have! I absolutely agree that allowing yourself to actually process the emotions makes it easier to move forward, and I am so glad that's the case for you. Your thoughtfulness and maturity make it clear to me what a wonderful SLP you will be. :-) Thank you for the congrats and best wishes!

Lol, it's actually really silly, but I'm freaking out because last year I applied and got rejected to all my schools (and wait-listed to one), and I ended up crying a bit the day I got that last rejection letter, even though I thought I'd be able to deal with it a little better. I'll be traveling abroad for most of this March, so I'm just kind of scared I'll get the rejections somewhere in a foreign country and end up awkwardly crying in public or in the hotel. It's embarrassing, and totally a worst case scenario fear (if I get rejected to 12 schools I think I might have to reconsider if I belong in this field), but I just really am hoping to avoid finding out if it'll come true or not . Lame, but I'm terrified of rejections pouring in during that time.
n22 Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 question! Is it bad/out of the norm that my undergrad was com. dis. but i never did my 25 clinical hours? I didn't realize that the hours had to be affiliated with a college so I thought i was okay with my hours from the therapist I shadowed with...I didn't realize it was a big deal until everyone else told me i was the only one :|

Hopefully you hear back before you leave!

There are plenty of out of field applicants who haven't done any observation hours. I've also heard that a lot of schools won't even accept undergrad observation hours anyway. My school doesn't offer hours through a program so I have over 30 hours but technically not through an accredited institution. Think of it as experience but by no means would it make the difference between you getting into a program or not! racoomelon 1

Think of it as experience but by no means would it make the difference between you getting into a program or not! Mmmm I'd say depends what schools/programs they applied for. In my state that is highly unusual and the applicant would be ineligible unless they were specifically applying to a leveling program or a program that as you said does not count other school's hours. However the schools that do require these observation hours typically state as much in their admissions requirements page. I'd say don't panic yet, but definitely take a look at what the schools/programs you applied for require or ask them if it is an issue. Maybe they have it recorded unofficially somewhere at your school? Observation hours that are not supervised by school approved clinicians/professors do not count towards those 25 hours, at least in my state and the programs I have personally applied to. Hoping your situation is different though! n22 1

For William Paterson, I completed everything by Dec 23rd, but it says ready for review as of 2/27/16, which is today. Does that mean that I'll have an answer soon? Some people were saying they checked the portal and their info was gone completely, so I'm a little nervous because that didn't happen to me. I'm not sure if that means they already got decisions and didn't post them on here, or if there was an error? I personally have not heard back from Queens College, but I currently go there and I know they have began contacting people for interviews.

sudsnbubbles Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Hey everyone! Congratulations on your acceptances! I've been lurking this forum for awhile now, but decided to speak up a bit. This wait is killing me! I have not heard a word from any of the programs I applied to since they sent their generic application received e-mails. Anyone apply to Eastern New Mexico University? I was looking to see if they had an area where I could check my application status, but I couldn't find any such thing. Anyone have better luck?

I finished my 25 hours in the summer before I started my graduate program, and they even offered to let me finish them up once I started campus. I know many people who didn't get theirs through their school's program, but they sought out SLPs in the community, and those hours were accepted. Your observation hours have to have been done under an SLP with their CCC. That's basically the only requirement. It's up to the graduate program you attend whether or not to accept your 25 observation hours, but most programs aren't too finicky about it. If you did them under someone with an ASHA number and their C's, I don't think it'd be a problem, but it's ultimately up to the school you attend for your master's. n22 1

Well it probably depends on the school but I doubt it. So long as you have proof you did them. My school had it where if you met the requirements (which among other things included the observation hours) you started clinic first semester. If not you started second semester (after taking a class to meet the requirements). It added a class but no extra time (as you had clinic 4 of the 5 semesters including summer). Once you figure out what schools you are deciding between, email them and ask what their policy is. Also: Did you need the hours to graduate from your undergrad? Because you could get a letter on school letter head from the head of the department saying you met the ASHA requirements and have him/her sign it with his/her ASHA number (that's actually what I ended up doing as it was the best way to demonstrate I'd met the requirements) Also part 2: is there a way you could get the hours through a school before you start? Just to cove your basis? 25 hours is a lot but you'd have a few months to do it. Edited February 29, 2016 by NorcalSLP n22 1

jelizabethvt Posted February 29, 2016 Posted February 29, 2016 Hey everyone! I have a quick question that I was wondering if you could all help me with? At what point is it okay to email the school and ask when they will notify you? I don't want to bother them and ruin my chances of acceptance if they haven't made a decision but I am basing a lot of things off of this acceptance such as leaving my current job for a new one etc (i don't want to go to a new job now if I am accepted as it wouldn't make sense to work there for only a few months before graduate school). I also have only applied to one school so if I don't get in I need to decide what my next step is. Thanks in advance!
