How many years have you been trying?

This is my first year applying. And my mom's logic is "grounded" in the fact that my dad has two business-related master's, so getting one made getting the other easier in his case.

You are still completing classes. What are your stats? Don't give up if it is what you want. I know how you feel.

Are you on mobile? My stats are in my signature. I'll still post them here though. I don't have my prereq GPA in my sig though.

My apologies. If you can get your pre-requisite GPA to at least 3.5, you will be better shape. I was told many schools look for 3.5 and higher. I would kill for your quantitative GRE score!

I am currently in my last two required classes of the prereq program. There's one that is optional since most schools don't require it yet. I'm going to probably get B's in these two classes, because reasons. So there's no hope of 3.5GPA for me.

Do you have any extra curricular activities?  Volunteering?

To add to arcanelady, do you have related work experience? Research experience? How is your SOP? Your LORs?  Could you retake some prerequisite classes to boost your GPA? And I agree with your mom (sorry) that widening your field of schools will help should you need to apply next year. You still have a wait list & another school to hear from, don't give up hope yet. Many of us had to apply more than once, so don't worry too much about that yet. Focus on ways to improve your application if necessary.

This is just a personal anecdote that might be of interest. One of my professors mentioned that most programs want to increase diversity (some even have boards or committees dedicated to outreach towards minorities). But-- and I don't understand all of this or know the particulars-- she told my class that in our state (AZ), universities aren't supposed to look at ethnicity or race during application processes. The state doesn't follow affirmative action, so they prevent it by telling admissions that they aren't allowed to look at race/ethnicity when choosing candidates. 

Again, I don't know if this is actually the case or if I misunderstood her (though I doubt it's the latter). I know I had to fill out my ethnicity on the application for the two Arizona schools I applied to. But Arizona is well-known for doing things along the lines of what my professor described, so I wouldn't be surprised if they do have some rule like that in place. 

I just thought that might be interesting!

Don't worry about having a 3.5 GPA. It may not be easy, but its definitely possible. I've been accepted to two schools with an overall of 2.84 and similar GREs. All I did differently this year compared to last year is show continued interest in speech by becoming a literacy tutor for adult immigrants, take another prereq, and did some serious research on schools' acceptance stats and reaching out to each one individually and discussing my situation to see if I might be a good fit as an applicant to each program. Took forever (spreadsheets on spreadsheets on spreadsheets!) and I had to really expand the geographic area I was willing to live within, but it worked out in the end. I'm very excited about my options. Don't lose hope!! Feel free to PM me if I can be of any help.

I had several extracurriculars in high school, but I didn't continue them into college since my undergrad school didn't have them. You can't have a marching band if you don't have a football team, etc. Otherwise, all my extracurriculars in college were entertainment-based and not resume-building-based.

I did one internship at an elementary school with the SLP there, and wrote about it in my SOP I think. I have no idea how my LORs were; one professor (whom I have had 5 times over the entire course of my college career and knows me very well) got all of her LORs turned in in November. The other professor from that school (whom I have had a few times and supervised my internship) turned in her LORs at 6AM on the day of the deadline, except for CSDCAS ones, which she turned in on February 1 and completely disregarded the deadline of January 15 for Pittsburgh. My third LOR writer I had four times for Spanish classes a few years ago, and he finished one letter in November and the rest in late January/early February, also disregarding the Pittsburgh deadline. Pitt only looked at my application after I asked them why I never received confirmation for my completed application. They are also the only school who has given me something besides a rejection so far.

I have 9 hours of undocumented shadowing hours, since I didn't know how to record them properly. My school barely had a linguistics department, so I have almost no research experience. My first and only job has been part-time in a fast-food restaurant.

I could retake some classes. I did very badly in one class last summer due to lingering emotional effects of the death of a friend.

And, @NorcalSLP, my mother's point wasn't to expand my field of schools, but to expand the number of fields i'm applying to. She thinks getting a teaching degree will somehow help me get into a CSD degree.

Why didn't you apply to other smaller programs, like UDC? The schools you are applying to are generally more competitive. Asha Ed Find is amazing for providing you with stats, although your mother is trying to look out for you, it doesn't make sense if you're trying to go back into SLP. Maybe taking some more courses in communications to strengthen your GPA or getting more experience in the field would help more. Also reaching out to schools for feedback! There are a lot of other options. You could do research with someone at a school you want to go to, there are always forms and ways to volunteer and become involved.

I didn't know UDC had it. I thought it was only Howard and Gallaudet in DC. I was trying to stay within a day's driving distance of my parents this time around, too, and all that's around here seems to be competitive schools.

I also knew that these schools were competitive, and that their average applicant stats are just that: averages. I thought that I'd still have a chance even though I wasn't the "ideal" applicant. I know better now.

Hey, Puffer Fish, don't worry just yet. Even if you were waitlisted at one school, so many spots open up after April 15th. Did you write to Pitt and let them know how excited you are about their program? Definitely also take some time to feel bad and process your emotions. You can't make feelings go away, I don't think, just feel them and get them over with, so do that, too.

If you don't get in this year, there are definitely things you can do. Raising your GRE writing scores, getting more observation hours, volunteering, getting a job in a school or other related area. I think we're in similar geographic areas, and I have a list of opportunities that I was keeping for the chance that I would have to apply again next year and wanted to beef up my resume. If you want to PM me, I can send some of those along.

Just found out I was offered an assitantship to Mizzou that will cover tuition through summer '17. My decision just got so much harder

I still haven't heard anything. Someone said they'd be posting decisions through the end of this week. I'm really just expecting a waitlist or rejection at this point.

This waiting game is killing me.  I still have 6 schools to wait for and half of them already sent letters to some of their applicants.  Does anyone know when we'll be getting another wave of emails from Chapman, CSULB, or MSU?

I got an email from UNM today! I need to ask them about in-state tuition or the possibility thereof. Is there a polite way to do this? 

(Also, this good news came at a price-- I just found out the house my roommates and I are renting has termites. So I have a lot of mixed feelings right now, but can safely say I'm glad I got into UNM AND we don't have a scorpion infestation.)

Did you get the email last week when they said they were taking longer than expected? They said they would for sure have decisions by Friday but were hoping for Monday or Tuesday. I haven't heard anything since then
