I've been noticing on this forum that most people didn't apply to MSW at York U, is there a reason for that?

I just saw a rejection status from the program myself last week. It's actually my top choice for MSW because of its anti-oppressive framework.

I called York but they said they do not offer advice to improve your application. Is it worth re-applying?

Anyone with previous York MSW program, please share!

Thank you,

Emily

Personally,it called for really high grades that I do not have and 2000 hours of experience is a lot for someone who is still in their BSW, I feel like they prefer paid work and alot of it and there's no way I could have been accepted. If it wasn't so competitive I would have applied.

Hopefully you'll get in next year!!

Did anyone on this thread apply to the University of Waterloo MSW program? The application deadline (to upload supporting documents) was December and I'm slowly getting very anxious and impatient.

Hey there aren't too many of us on here who applied but there have been some posts about the Waterloo MSW. If you scroll back a few threads one member posted about calling the school for a date and I believe it was April? I check still Quest obsessively though because I like to torture myself..

Hello,

I've applied to York's 2 year MSW, but I haven't heard anything from them or checked recently. I was rejected from York last year, it's always worth reapplying if it's what you really want. :)

Hey emily,

I applied to York's Advanced Standing MSW program for similar reasons as you. I  also applied because I heard their funding is great (part of the reason I didn't apply to U of T - I need the funding!)

When did you see you weren't accepted? I am so sorry to hear that, btw. I have been there and it can be tough. If you really want acceptance, however, keep applying! Where else did you apply to? My application says "No Decision Yet"

Good luck with the other applications!

I received the following emial this morning. Not sure what to make of it. Someone told me on the phone last week that decisions would not be sent out until April.

Hello

Thank you for your follow-up. Decisions on acceptance are being communicated this week.

Well...the person who I spoke to on the phone, the one that told me that all acceptances go out in April, also told me that all 1 and 2 year acceptances go out at the same time.  Is that what you mean by Advanced Standing? You have to have a BSW to take the program at Waterloo, as far as I am aware. The only options are part-time or full time.

Yes, I do have a BSW - I forgot that is a requirement for the program (my brain is foggy with all of the applications I have done over the years!! LOL - My mistake!)

Isn't the program just a one-year advanced standing program? Or was the person referring to full-time and part-time studies (by 1&2 year)?

She meant 1&2 year programs, but I don't know if that is a realiable source or not.... still checking quest like a madwoman!

Hi Kat,

I applied to the two-year MSW program at York. It already says "Reviewed - Unsuccessful". I guess they filtered me out as soon as they calculated my GPA, cause I consider my holistic application a very strong one. I saw it last week.

Thank you!

I guess i"ll have to keep trying! Last year it's 750 applications, with 20 admitted into the two-year program!

I have applied to York's two-year MSW 3 times and I was rejected as well even though I was a strong candidate. I am pretty sure it was my GPA. Because they have SO many applicants, they eliminate people based on GPA first. That is what I heard from a friend who did her MSW at York, and I also know that most of her classmates had A's when they were accepted. When I spoke to someone on the phone from York this year, she said that its just the sheer volume of applicants, they have so many great candidates! She also told me now that I am applying to the Advanced Standing program, by chances are MUCH higher. If you haven't already done so, I would recommend applying to BSW programs as well. The advanced standing MSW programs are less competitive.

I applied to York's BSW two years ago and I was accepted with my GPA.

Did you apply anywhere else?

Hey Kat,

Where did you do your bsw? I applied to both Waterloo and Dalhousie for mine this year. I am hoping for Waterloo since it is only 10 months, but I have no idea what my chances are of being accepted.

I did the one-year HBSW at Lakehead at the Thunder Bay campus. Its a great program, I recommend it and Thunder Bay is an amazing place to learn about/practice social work. The placements are amazing since there is only one school of social work in the city. I was teaching DBT modalities in group therapy and had my own clients by the time I finished placement. When I was hired after placement as an addiction counsellor, I essentially had all of the same duties, so placement was almost as hands-on as a paid position at the agency.

I hope you get into Waterloo! getting a BSW in 10 months is awesome, its essentially a little more than the foundation year in the two-year MSWs, from my understanding at least. When do you hear back from them?
