Woooo I just got my writing score from my first and only GRE test on November 7... got a 5.5!!! (98th percentile)  I know HGSE looks at apps holistically, but they did say they value the writing section the most, so this is very encouraging for me! :)   Although some say this won't make a difference unless I got below a 4, but I like to believe it helps my chances a little?

Congrats!!  That's definitely huge.  I'm pretty sure that score does matter a lot at HGSE based on what i know to be many of my former classmates' scores on that section.  So you're one step closer!!!

Just formally submitted my PhD application! Fingers are now crossed, and the waiting game commences!

Question for the other PhD applicants: If you checked the box to be considered for the M.Ed. pool if not accepted to the Ph.D. program, any idea when we'd receive the chance to upload the additional documents for that? I assume it wouldn't be until they've made final decisions regarding the Ph.D. program, but if anyone has additional insight I'd love to hear it. :-)

I'm applying for the Ph.D. program, and I don't see anywhere for a personal statement. Is that right? Most of the other apps that I'm working on have asked for a personal statement and I'm surprised not to see one. How are you guys getting around this and still sharing your stories?

I used the Statement of Purpose to tell my story. Though telling the story, putting research interests, the why HSGE, and everything else in 1,000 words wasn't easy!

Just a heads up to the folks putting in PhD applications. I just had my GRE scores clear today even though I sent them online on the 24th.  Might want to put them in through ETS now so they are officially sent before Dec 1st.

How do you know that they cleared? I submitted everything yesterday but I can't tell if my scores went through okay. Also, did you guys get a confirmation email? The other schools that I applied to sent a confirmation email but I didn't see anything from HGSE...Aghhhhh

I haven't submitted my HGSE app yet, but I can see on my application that it says GRE scores "Verified" in green font, which appeared a few days after I had submitted them, and I am no longer able to edit my self-reported scores, because HGSE knows them to be legitimate.  I'm sure that if ETS told you they are sent, HGSE has them.  If you've already submitted, you might be unable to see the same verification that I can see on my in-progress application.  In rare instances, if your name does not exactly match in their systems (like a middle initial was used in one system and not in another), they will have to match the scores manually which could delay verification.

Not sure about the confirmation email but I would assume you should get one... I got one from NYU and Penn....

You can see when they're sent on the ETS website. It'll have the schools listed, and the "pending" will be changed to a date.

Did you guys put a title for your SOPs?

I just titled mine "Statement of purpose". Original, I know. :P

Anyone else feeling really anxious about this whole process? I've applied to 5 schools, with 3 stating they'll get back to me in December. The long wait until March for HGSE is going to be the big one.

I'm incredibly anxious and the soonest I can really hope to hear back from ANYTHING is end of January!  All of mine have mid-to-late March decision timelines, with Penn being the only exception with a rolling admission.  But since I just submitted that app, and my last recommendation is not yet in, it will probably not be sent for review until mid-to-late December, and by then I'm screwed with the holidays, they won't look at it for many weeks.

It's also terrifying having Penn be the first one to decide, because their cohort size for my program is about 30 students, and I've heard about people getting rejected by Penn and getting into HGSE.  But receiving a rejection for 1/4 schools and then having to wait another two months to know if I got in anywhere will be painful.  I just have to hope and pray that if HGSE doesn't happen, NYU and TC are more likely.  I definitely can't let myself believe any of these are "safety" schools, but at this point I'd just like reassurance I'll get in somewhere.  Knowing Penn might very well reject me will be a discouraging start to the process, even if it ends well for me somewhere.  On the contrary, getting into Penn will make the rest of the process so much easier because at least I know I don't need to reconsider the next year of my life.

I didn't put one directly on mine. I did title the PDF with my name and HGSE SOP when I uploaded it.

Hi everyone,

Im planning to apply for the special studies program. Will probably apply for 2017 as I only finished my GRE a couple of weeks ago, and I dont want to rush the application. My official scores were 159 Verbal, 158 Quant, and 4.0 AWA. The Harvard GSE average AWA is 4.5 according to their website. Do you think my scores are adequate ?

Keep in mind that if the average is 4.5, then many students who were accepted got 4.0.  I think with a strong SOP/experience/GPA, it's definitely adequate.

Keep your heads up! I got in a couple of years ago, and I had neither a title on my SoP, nor higher than a 4.5 AWA.

What was your full GRE score?

How big is the cohort for Ed.M Ed Policy and Management?

It was about 80 two years ago when I was there. It's the biggest by far.  Most of the programs are 30-40.

Anyone else applying to EdLD?  I'm ready to submit but I am not sure if the short essay needs to have citations or if it's OK to skip since it's only a 500 word essay.  Eek.  Such a nerd question, I know. I'm so nervous. Plus, my recommenders haven't submitted yet which makes me nervous. Application deadline is December 14.
