I think if you have a POI already you can reach out to that person to ask about your application.  If not, then the grad admissions director who may be the person who gets this question most often.  I would probably send along something thanking them for their consideration, saying you want to make the most of the year to come, and you are particularly excited about this program.  Is there anything that they can say about your application specifically, was it a fit issue?  Do you lack research experience, etc?  I think that showing a strong interest and a desire to improve goes a long way ... pi515 1

gingin6789 Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Yes, congrats to the Brandeis admit! I'm hoping to hear from them sometime soon now (good OR bad news, that is!)!Â
oedipus Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Can any Columbia admits comment on the form their acceptance took? (i.e., email from POI, DGS, admissions office, etc.?; also has your application status changed from submitted to something else?)
ts1493 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 thanks @ConsciousKid, we'll see! Â I've been checking my status page, since I recall seeing a while ago on the results page that in years past Northeastern didn't send an email to reject, just change the status page so some people found out just randomly checking the status of their apps. Â And congrats on your Brown admission - you must be really happy about that! Â

Got a mail from columbia SIPA that my decision is ready to be viewed online. Then I logged in and downloaded the letter which was shown as an account update.

I went to a U.S. undergrad, but abroad for a MSSc and the system is entirely different. If you give it a go next time around, best of luck. I might be in the same boat. I still don't know but understand given context clues it means professor... can someone clarify this lol

bluefoxblue Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Yuuuuuup got a rejection from UCLA. I'm feeling pretty down now about these rejections. I'm waiting on UC Irvine and UW-Seattle (my alma mater), but I'm not thinking anything positive will come. Like some others, I'm not traditional. I come from a Social Psychology background, I'm not in my early-mid 20s, and I've been working in a public policy org for the past 3.5 years. I'm trying to think if I want to try again this coming year, but also want to really think about where I want to take my research and in where. LIFE, GUYS.Â
Shay825 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 The Graduate Coordinator from UMass Boston reached out to me via email for more information. She indicated that they are just now beginning the process of evaluating applications. The Sociology PhD is a new program at this school. Did anyone else apply?
ConsciousKid Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 ahh man U Chicago would have been awesome! Wish I would have applied. Congrats to U Chicago admits! And all others as well!

Nope, applied to a different program at UMASS.  I think it's a good sign, though, that they reached out personally to you.  Hope good news is not far off! Shay825 1

Hey, I didn't apply, but I just realized I know someone who is currently in the UMass Boston PhD program. Let me know if you want me to reach out to her/connect you two!
Port Lake Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I'm claiming a Chicago admit! Pertaining to the earlier discussion, I didn't contact any POIs before I applied. Some programmes (like Stanford) advised against. I would've maybe emailed if I had something meaningful to ask, but my research fits were pretty obvious to me so I didn't feel the need. ts1493 and gingin6789 2

nowayjose Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Am getting pretty desperate for just about any form of contact from the departments. This is such an odd and opaque process.
