Have you heard anything at all from Yale?

Thank you, I was surprised to hear this early.

I'm waiting on 9 others, a few the same as you I think - Yale and CUNY

I'm waiting on Yale as well :/ It's one of the schools I've yet to hear back from that I would  seriously consider over my current offers.

I'm in the exact same boat, haven't heard a peep. Does anyone know if University of Washington has sent out all of their acceptances or if they're still sending them? I see someone was accepted yesterday...

We'll be okay, cgraham :)

Looking at past years, it seems like the earliest anybody waiting to hear back from Yale will get some sort of news is around Feb. 19th. Most acceptances and rejections seemed to go out late Feb. early March.

I think thats pretty much when all mine normally come out. It's hard to wait and wonder on nine when I now actually heard from one.

Hi. I'm an international student applying for the 2017 fall cohort (Sociology PhD). Does anyone have general ideas on when the visiting weeks for Brown, UPenn, Columbia, Johns Hopkins and Michigan will be held? So far, I have one acceptance (UW-Seattle) and I'm trying to book my flight for the visiting week (March 3-4). If I get admitted to any one of these schools, I would stay longer in the U.S to visit them as well. Do most schools have visiting weeks in early-mid March? I need to book my flight to Seattle before they get more expensive so I was wondering. UW-Seattle only covers up to 300 dollars of my travel expenses and my flight is way more expensive than this..

Has anyone heard anything from Indiana? This time last year they were sending notifications for interviews. It's my dream program so I am anxiously waiting for any word from them!!!

Nothing, I was really hoping we would hear something this week.

Before I unexpectedly got the UCONN info yesterday I was doing such a good job of not being an email stalker or freaking out. I really thought based on my programs histories, that it would be another 2-3 weeks min. before I heard anything. I was also really convinced my GRE might be too low to get in anywhere, so I was thinking no news is better than bad news. But now that I know about this one I can't stop obsessing about hearing from the rest!

I'm so jealous you had that attitude at all, the second I sent in my Jan 15th apps I started freaking out about the Dec 15th decisions... and I haven't stopped since.

Have you already been admitted to these programs? I ask because piggybacking visits off of each other is generally frowned upon. That being said, I would imagine that many programs would understand our desire to do so, being that you are an international student and travel is expensive. I would also be careful for in the way you ask, if you do, for additional funding from other schools. They may feel as if they are contributing to or aiding their competition in some way. This certainly seems like a tricky situation. Best of luck and congratulations on your acceptance!

I'm making up for it now trust me. I can't stop checking my email, even though I know it won't be likely till the endish of Feb or early March on the rest.

Plus I've been distracting myself with wedding plans, I'm getting married and then honeymooning right up to the start of next year... so that should make an exciting start for where ever I end up going. Everything has been booked for a bout a year, so we can't move anything, so it looks like honeymooning until 2 days before alot of the programs start classes. Yikes, hopefully the dept. are willing to work something out with me about missing orientation.

The first always seems to be the one to set it off. I was resigned to just letting them role in until I received the invite from ND. Now I check my email 20 times a day and frequently check this forum for any tidbit of info that might surface about acceptances/rejections/interviews. At least we know there are others in the same boat. Solidarity makes the uncertainty and the wait a bit easier.

Congrats! Sounds like it will be chaotic, but probably much better to do it before you're actually in the program.

Agreed, the only reason I've calmed down a bit is that nobody on here has heard from any of the programs I applied to, but I think once I start seeing people hear back and I haven't gotten anything I'm really going to start freaking out :)

i was actually planning to send another app out today or this weekend. But, now I'm really not sure if I should or not since I have an acceptance. It's alot of money for an application fee, and idk if I would pick that program or not over my current offer if the funding was the same.

If it were me, I wouldn't. I cringe every time I have to pay an application fee. And if all things are equal between the schools and you already have an offer of funding you can live off of, is there really a good reason to apply?

Well it's been in the plan for a few years now, and booked for a year, so the timing just kind of happened like this. I would prefer not to miss orientation, but there's nothing we could do without losing thousands, So I'm just going to have to work it out with my dept. and enjoy Thailand!

That's my struggle with it... my research is quite cross-discipline... to the point where I've been applying to 3 different subjects entirely based on where the faculty is that I should be working with for a best fit. This is what people in my field have told me to do because every school classifies what I do a bit differently.  The program I have yet to apply to to is actually a different field then my current offer. It would be my top choice for that field... but I'm not sure if I want that field over my current offer field.

I don't know anything about the visitation weekends, but if anybody knows about Penn that would be great info to know. As far as the other schools, I don't think there's been any admits from there yet. So, it's unlikely any of us know unless we have a personal connection.

Regarding cost-sharing between programs, I think most likely it will be fine. It's all about how you phrase it and transparency. My partner requested two schools to do this since they were both close to each other. He ended up visiting both (one during their official visitation week and another on a rescheduled date) and they were ok with it. The schools ended up doing the planning of exact travel arrangements and costs. One school paid the departure flight, the other school paid the return flight.

I would actually consider submitting another app depending on a few things. How many have you applied to so far? How good is the fit with the program? What is the program's reputation? In general, I would encourage you to have as many choices as possible. But if you already know you wouldn't go there and money is tight then maybe pass. But until you meet your potential advisors, its hard to truly know where you'll be attending.

I have 10 out now, 1 acceptance and nothing heard at all from the other 9. By the time I pay fees for everything that needs to be sent i'm looking about about another 150 to just apply. apply. And your right about not knowing without talking to the profs. However I do think it would be a good fit based on their profiles, but I'm not sure what field is "better" overall to have a degree in. The location of this one also means I'll be commuting at least an additional 2+ hours a day in comparison with my current offer to live with my husband, or I would need to live separate from him like half the weekdays. He has encouraged me to pick based on fit, not distance though. This other program on average also takes 1-2 years less time though than my current offer will.

I completely understand. I come form an interdisciplinary background and also tend to be intradisciplinary (soc makes it really easy) too. When I was deciding whether to pursue soc or anth as my disciplinary anchor I looked up statistics about average median income for those who hold PhDs in both fields as well as job growth and available work outside of academia. Ideally, I want to be a tenured professor, but I also want to be sure that a plan B will be fairly easy to come by. Soc won out with the ability to work outside of academia and the median pay, but not necessarily in job growth. I think they were 1% or so behind the projected job growth for anth. Also, soc is just a better fit for what I want to do. I think you should take into consideration the compromises you will be making to research the topic you want and aim for what would be closest to what you would do if there were no disciplinary, monetary, political, etc. factors constraining your research and writing.

This does not answer your dilemma of whether to apply. But maybe it helps?

Seems like it's a lot to consider. I understanding not wanting to part with the $150 but unless it'll be really hard to swing it, I'd personally rather have a difficult time choosing between programs rather than regretting I did not apply to one. That said, 10 schools is a fair amount to apply to. So, it may not be that risky if you do not apply.

Yes, I should look more into that before deciding. It's such a hard thing when you feel like a school is a very good fit, but it would mean being living away from a spouse at least half the week. And maybe for the first years it wouldn't be that bad, we certainly have dealt with separation alot due to the nature of his jobs already. But I wonder if after those first few years if I would regret it. I know I would be applying for sure right now if it was closer, and while some of my other schools are actually in the same city already, I just wonder if I really want to give myself another potential pull to do that. I think I'm going to take the weekend to think about it long and hard and decide by Monday, which would still be plenty of time for my app to be there.
