I had a dream this morning - that I was accepted, but I found out in a roundabout way because someone handed me a copy of my SOP all marked up in red. And it had a grade - B. ("B is for bad," my internal narrative reminded me. That's actually what we used to say when I was at Chicago.) But then... there was another note below that... saying that they would give me a chance anyway. Then I woke up.

Yeah. I actually supervise 2 PhDs (and 1 PhD student) in my job so it's kind of weird. Not in my intended field of study, but still. My hope is that the adcom will see me as a "low maintenance" student.

I found this thread while looking for something else. Let's see if we can restart it! I'm 40, married, 2 senior cats, with house. I got my MA when I was 25. Had thought that I would reapply to PhD programs in anthropology (that was the original plan, but I was rejected everywhere since I didn't know what I was doing.) Time passed... I developed a career in public behavioral health. I work for a state agency and I love my job. Personally, it took a long time for me to evolve to the point where I don't feel the need to define myself by how smart I am. If I get into grad school - great! But if I don't... well, I will be fine. Maybe I'll try again, or maybe I won't. Does anyone else feel this way?

So, CT, MA, and RI are effectively shut down at the moment due to the blizzard. Roads aren't open (at least, in CT). I'm sure this will impact notifications from schools in these states! How are people doing? Over 2 feet here in the Hartford area.

So, I'm a state employee, and during the course of a meeting this morning, I heard that there will be a preliminary budget presented on Wednesday. It occurs to me that one reason why I haven't seen many results from a certain public university might be because they will need to learn how *their* budget will be impacted. In a strange way, this theory comforts me.

At least you caught it and they are still going to look at it! There's still hope!

What are some ways to reward or treat yourself once this is over (or, for getting through another week of waiting... etc.)? I will be getting a kayak rack installed on my car, regardless of admission outcome. Because my car is a Toyota Yaris I'm going to let the professionals handle it. I don't usually spend this much on recreational stuff, but this will be my reward to myself for giving this PhD thing a second try after being rejected 15 years ago!

Yes!! The graduate program director told me that they were going to meet on the 9th to decide who's in or out and the following week to discuss funding. So now here we are on the 30th.... I haven't seen any results for this program yet, though.
