I've never seen a chick do a pull up, proper deadlift, or clean in my life. they always stick around the floor mats or treadmills, and only really wonder towards the free weights with their guy friends or bff. granted, I don't visit the gym all the time, but the pattern is pretty obvious.

by clean I mean power clean. I've seen them do cleaning a lot hehehehe

I should get that pull up bar setup on my door frame. they're pretty handy, only $30 bucks from amazon, and you mount it on your door; easy on easy off. I used to do 20 every morning to wake me up. only takes about a minute, and one of the best and easiest compound exercises out there. push ups are nice too, but where I used to live, the floor wasn't clean.. otherwise I'd have try to do 50 or so every morning to balance out the pull ups.

imo, there's no need to get a gym membership. even when I used to have free gym as a student, I mostly stuck around the power rack. If you want to get strong quickly, all you need to do is pullups (with variations), bench press (otherwise pushups with variations), squats (with good form), deadlifts (with good form). There's also a bunch of abs exercises that help your core as a runner. but if you're doing even two of the 4 exercises listed above consistently, you should already be in good shape.

it'd be good to think about what you want to do with your career. if a terminal master's is enough, then it'll be worth it to seek some fellowships or TA/RA. If my end goal were Master's, I'd much rather just pay that and start working than dragging out 5 years in a degree that I have no strong desire for. 5 years at $25k/year or buying a Masters and making bank after that?

some people do a phd with the intention to drop out with a master's, just so they can have the school pay for their degree, but I don't like that at all. they're basically taking away a position better suited to another applicant, and putting that money in their own pocket. not very ethical

we want to think we live in a world where people aren't presumptuous, but that's not true. that's why I think it's better to just get to know everyone better first before getting into something personal like this.

and I wouldn't say engineering is very similar to chemistry in this regard. there's a traditional perception that the men in engineering all have wives at home and bring home the bacon. I'm sure there are gay people where I work, but I wouldn't know them if they were talking to me face to face. Maybe part of that has to do with being in a conservative and slightly redneck region of Texas... But generally, I see engineering as a less homo friendly field.

some of us have different definitions for "emergencies" I thought you meant crashing a car into a curb and needing a whole new suspension, in which case emergency fund makes sense. batteries need to be replaced about once every blue moon, spark plugs cost ilke $20. most other car problems are due to negligence more than anything else. But I agree having a backup is a good idea. that's partially why I want a motorcycle, so that if one doesn't work, the other one can take its place.

well gnomsky was expressing his concern about making boom boom, and I made a comment about getting a splinter in the wee wee, and it started escalating

but to actually contribute to the topic, no I've never slept on a hard surface (actually I probably have, but whatever). A good option might be a nice air mattress. I slept on one for months until I adopted a cat that started stretching on it with his claws.

also, a mattress isn't hotter because it absorbs heat. a mattress is largely air, which an insulator. It conducts heat very poorly, so it stays in the body. on the other hand, a wooden board conducts heat much better, meaning it'll take it away from your body much easier.

me too. when I used to have an xbox. I preferred sentinel because I can bring two biotics with me and detonate the shit out of the enemy - hardly ever used the shield. but infiltrator was also nice, especially when you max out cloak, and the sniper time distortion was awesome - headshots all day errday.
