For me, I'm using 3,4,5. I wanted to finish teaching my first year and during my second year I switched institutions and had a one year fellowship.

Because I just can't focus this week, I've put together a table of past GRFP due dates and numbers of applicants so people in the future can compare the length of time between due date and notification. I'm having trouble finding a specific thread for 2005. I'm going off the list made 10 years ago on CC. It's possible it came out on a Friday and people first posted about it on a Saturday. 2006 came out on a Thursday, though.

Not sure what happened to the Bank section in the last few hours. So much spam recently.

The previous years email contains the decision.

I got a notification from info@nsfgrfp.org .

Asking the important questions. That's why I love this thread.

The GRFP threads here are amazing. For three straight years, I stayed up all night when fastlane went down and read through the growing conversation on the current GRFP thread. I didn't plan on sleeping those nights anyway.

Last year, any student that had applied their 1st year of grad school, they were grandfathered in under the old rules and could apply again as a 2nd year grad student. If you applied as a 1st year grad in 2017, you can't apply this year.

UC Berkeley Prospective Graduate Students
jmillar replied to SpeakItInto Existence's topic in Public Health Forum
After the departmental recommendation, your file goes to Berkeley's Graduate Division for final review for admission. For me last year, there were 10 days in between getting the departmental recommendation and the official acceptance from Berkeley. Nothing official came in the mail, but I did get an email and phone call.- 38 replies

Has anyone heard from Berkeley Environmental Health?
jmillar replied to atlremix's topic in Public Health Forum
I posted the two results in 2017 (unofficial email on January 31st, phone call / official portal acceptance on February 10th). Did you email any professors ahead of time for interviews over the phone? I feel like that's why I heard back so early. -
We may not really know until awards are made. However, on page 7 of this document that came out in December ( https://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R45009.pdf ) it says they requested a budget that would support 1,000 new fellows. This is also seen on page three of this document: https://www.nsf.gov/about/budget/fy2018/pdf/46_fy2018.pdf

Yep, and when PIBS sends out your itinerary, you will also get a separate contact from your student host. They will be there to help if you have any questions before you get to Ann Arbor.

I interviewed at UMich last year through PIBS. It was a little overwhelming as each weekend they invite 100 students. I think ~60 get accepted. Research the people you will be paired with during interviews. They submit reviews of you and also the grad students helping out. Being versatile in your research interests helps and it worked in my favor.

I ended up having 4, but even that was a bit too much. It depends on whether your in school, how many classes, teaching load, etc. My biggest problem is that 3 of them were on the same weekend, so I had to ask to reschedule 2 of them. Some schools offer more than one weekend, but this is not always the case. If you get too many, you may have to turn some down.

I did receive an NSF GRFP, which is how I am funding part of my program. The rest is funded through an in house fellowship program at UM. What I meant was I applied to PhD programs outside of strictly Epidemiology to make sure I would not loose eligibility. I still have ties to the Epidemiology department, but my actual department is Bioinformatics. I also made sure my research is more based on evolution, rather than health related outcomes. The interdisciplinary angle will work if you can think of another area other than Epidemiology to be part of that interdisciplinary work. The NSF wording was changed in 2012 to heavily discourage Epidemiology work.
-
Make sure your area of study is eligible. Any research public health related is usually turned down as they want you to apply to NIH instead. I purposely stayed away from Epidemiology programs for this reason: "Individuals are not eligible to apply if they will conduct biomedical research for which the goals are directly health-related, such as etiology, diagnosis or treatment of physical or mental disease, abnormality, or malfunction in humans and other animals. Research activities using animal models of disease, for developing or testing of drugs or other procedures for treatment of disease, and statistical modeling for which the purpose is diagnosis or epidemiology also are not eligible for support." https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2016/nsf16588/nsf16588.htm

Nothing is official yet, but NSF has mentioned that would be one of the costcutting measures if their budget is reduced by 11%. http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/06/nsf-offers-arm-s-length-defense-trump-s-2018-request http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/05/how-nsf-cut-11-its-budget

Has anyone who received a Munger contract received their apartment number? Move in is a month away and it would be good to know my shipping address.
