U-M_Detroiter got a reaction from MacroMSW in University of Michigan MSW Fall 2014 applicants!
It took me about a month or so after being admitted to hear back about scholarships. I would try to contact the department and ask them directly.

I only know about UW from the research I've done on their program during my application process, but they do have a great, highly ranked Public Health department (their SW department is also highly ranked) that has a few professors that do research on HIV/AIDS. I know it's not social work, but you could possibly take a few public health classes that are geared toward your goals or even get an MSW/MPH there. If you are interested in going on for your PhD, I would consider taking as many statistics/research classes as you can because it will be a major part of your PhD career.

U-M_Detroiter got a reaction from Goobah in What subsections of Social Work entail a lot of creativity on the job?
I think that research involves a lot of creativity and problem solving. This is one of the reasons I am so drawn to research because I tend to get bored easily, and having done research as an undergrad, there is always something new to figure out or alter, and things typically go at a faster pace (when you have adequate funding). Doing research also gives you the ability to present your findings, which I always find fun.

I am starting my MSW program next year concentrating in Social Policy and Evaluation in the practice area of health. I am wondering if anyone can give me some insight on the amount of jobs that would be available to me after graduation, and maybe what kind of jobs there are for people interested in Policy. Ultimately, I would love to get a job as a policy analyst (health policy if possible) or a researcher. I am passionate about access to affordable healthcare and advocating for disease prevention, as well as research on how these topics affect the poor. I will be attending school in Michigan, but I am not bound to the state after graduation. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I thought several times about joining this thread, because I didn't want to add fuel to a potentially devisive fire on a forum that I generally find quite supportive and informative. However, I feel the need to respond directly to the following quote:

I couldn't disagree more with that sentiment. An emergency room doctor doesn't get to choose the patients they treat; a public defender can't turn down a client based on ideology; and, likewise, I strongly believe that Social Workers have an obligation to assist ALL individuals in need -- not just those whose politics or personal beliefs we agree with. The foundations of every accredited MSW program include a comittment to diversity and social justice. Jeff, are you suggesting that it would be okay for an LCSW to say they "couldn't in good conscious advocate" for Latinos or African Americans or disabled individuals or any other underserved group based on the social worker's personal beliefs? Or do you consider the LGBT community a different "class"? I just don't understand how to reconcile those views with the core values of the work we do.

With regard to the broader discussion of this thread, I believe if "socially conservative" is viewed from the perspective of trying to make programs more efficient and less wasteful -- absoulutely, I'm all for it -- however, if one's social conservatism is based on denying services to those in need, then I agree with the previous poster -- that's not my understanding of what this profession is about.

After completing an MSW program, you are usual eligible for something like an LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker) or LSW (Licensed Social Worker) designation. To receive the LCSW (or equivalent licensure) and practice clinical work independently, you need a certain number of supervised hours (which usually takes 2-3 years post-MSW, depending on your state).

    Hi all,

I am applying to U of M's MSW program next month, and was curious as to who else is planning on applying?

My stats: 3.3 overall gpa, 3.7 major gpa, I graduate this spring with my B.S. in psychology. 3 years working at a geriatric health campus, have been continuously volunteering at hospitals, for the american cancer society, fit kids 360, and various campus programs since graduating high school. I am also a research assistant and have presented at local and national conferences. I plan on concentrating in social policy and evaluation with health as my practice area.

Other schools I'm applying to: University of Washington, Wayne State University, Eastern Michigan University, and maybe UPenn. I am most interesting in policy analysis as I love statistics and research in addition to social work.

I am very nervous about getting into UM as I hear it is very competitive. Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated!
