Well you still have this semester + your senior year left, so there's still time. Actually, I have 3 strong recommendations that all came from relationships I built my senior year, so it's definitely doable. Is there any type of optional thesis for your major? If a thesis requires you to get an advisor and possibly a second reader, then there are two people right there that will be able to write good LoR's for you. Plus, completing a substantial research project will definitely help your chances anyway. The next best option is to try to get involved with research that fits your interest. Other than that, you could start going to office hours for classes that are relevant to your desired field of study, and have conversations about whatever interests you. Just be sure you do well in class and show enthusiasm for the material.

Then MSCS makes much more sense. She would be miserable in a PhD program if she doesn't want to do research

The decisions are almost here! Last year they came around the 26th, but it's come earlier in past years. Here's hoping that we all hear soon. Very anxious.

I'm not sure if it was a regular Surface, Pro or Pro 2, but my roommate bought one and returned it less than a week later to get an iPad so... yeah.

Generally, I'll just say this about the Surface. Trying to make a device that is both a tablet and a computer means that it's not goign to be as good of a tablet as a tablet is, nor as good of a computer as a computer is. Tablets and computers are not the same thing, so if you're getting a hybrid just remember that you're splitting the difference and making compromises.

Also, it's a windows piece of garbage, but if you like that stuff then go for it I guess.

I don't understand; don't you have 4 more schools to hear from? Do you know if they've already sent out decisions yet? Have you been contacted by them at all?

    Hi guys,

Feeling pretty bummed here, got rejected from my best chance schools, Berkeley & Stanford, and I haven't heard anything from any of the other schools (Georgia Tech, UCSB, UCLA, UCSD).

I have a pretty low gpa, I know (3.3), but surely my work and project experiences demonstrate how I am able to excel at several different fields! I currently attend a big UC school and work for a great professor, but I want to become an expert in study signal processing and information theory, not photonics. Too bad my dreams have been crushed  . What to do now?

Any advice? I have thought about trying to get a small job in the bay, CA, but I don't know how to pursue my goals in DSP without grad school..

    Experience:
    - Nano-photonics laboratory - Paid research assistant for 1 year, using TCAD to prototype and study devices
    - Big Electronics Corporation - testing intern for 1 year, tested volumes of boards, wrote automation tools
    - Carbon Nanotube laboratory - volunteer for 1.5 years, imaged and investigates samples
    - Few other internships

    - Several original "design" projects and applications built
    - Experienced in C/C++, Python, Web
    - Background (in order of familarity): DSP, Systems, Nanotechnology

I have a MacBook Pro, mostly because I grew up using Macs (they're the standard in my mom's field of work, and have been since for years & years), so the OS is familiar to me. Also, my mom gets steep discounts on Macs through her job, so I can pay less than half the normal amount for a MBP; otherwise, I think they'd be so far out of my price range that I would've switched to PCs years ago. Also, it's a pain to not be able to readily use ESRI software (namely, ArcMap/ArcGIS), and I recently learned firsthand that MBPs are super susceptible to water damage. Derp. In sum, unless you can get a Mac at a steep discount and are a long time user, it seems a bit silly to go the Mac route instead of the more affordable, versatile PC route — and I'm saying that as a classic pain-in-the-rump Apple fangirl who knows little to nothing about computers.

Nothing in the market compares to the macbook. Once you've used a macbook for a period of time, anything else you get your hands on just feels shitty. If you don't need a performance machine, I would suggest the macbook air. Otherwise I'd say go for the retina.
