I'll chime in. I'm 36 with no plans for children. I love my nieces and nephews and my friend's children, but just don't desire any of my own. I'm on my second IUD, and that helps me avoid hormonal birth control.  I've had many people ask if I have kids, but never anyone that jumped straight to asking how many I have. I find that most faculty in academia are very accepting of this, and it's largely been a non-issue for me. My classmates have never brought this up (probably because they're mostly 23 years old and haven't thought of it yet), but I don't feel like people expect it of me, which I appreciate. Glad to know there are more of us out there

Hello! I am actually a regular poster, but until I am ready to tell my cohort and DGS, I will be using this nifty pseudonym to ask questions about being preggers in grad school.

My partner and I just found out that I am indeed pregnant. It's early on (five weeks) and we have our first doctor's appointment in three weeks. This pregnancy is absolutely planned, and I'm thrilled. However, I'd love to get some input from folks who have been there, done that. When I google "pregnant in grad school," I find lots of people asking when is the best time to get pregnant in a PhD program. And that isn't really helpful to me at this point.

Okay, so here are my questions. If you were/are pregnant in grad school, when did you tell your advisors/professors? I am lucky enough to attend a very feminist program and most of my advisors are parents themselves. I'm not worried about their reaction, but I also want to keep this news to ourselves for a little bit.

Also, how did you deal with morning sickness in grad school? Did you have to leave class every few minutes to go to the bathroom? I've only had one day of morning sickness; fortunately, it was a day I didn't have to go to campus until late in the afternoon, so I felt better by then. I have a supply of cinnamon gum and ginger chews to help me cope if needed.

Lastly, how much time did you take off? I'm lucky enough to attend a university that offers six paid weeks of parental leave to its graduate assistants; plus, the due date is December, so I'll have all of Winter Break to rest, recover, and bond as well. I'm just not sure when to start it. Did you teach/attend classes right up until you popped? Or did you take a week (or more) off before your due date?

    Thanks all!

Make sure to check your department's stats before freaking out. For example, 50% of PhD grads in my upcoming department are tenure_track and only 2% industry.

Take the Fulbright! I went overseas to Germany with Fulbright last year, and I haven't regretted it Especially if you're feeling daunted by an international move, Fulbright offers you a great support network to fall back on, and is always there for you if you have any questions. The rewards far outweigh the costs, and since you won't even be going across an ocean or dealing with a language barrier, I'm sure you won't have too many problems.

Fulbright is also quite prestigious and is a great thing to have on your resume, which goes without saying. Of course, it also depends on the ranking of the institution where you'll be studying, but generally a Fulbright grant is a great thing to have.

I never said that everybody at dais is a problem, nor did i say these issues all occurred at Davis.

Davis is one of the best schools about accommodations. However, there is a bad apple in every bunch no matter how good the system.
Theres new faculty that dont know the P&P's among other reasons. Some can be so caught up and stressed about funding 9since there job depends on it) that they overlook their responsibilities to provide a room and need reminded.

I do not mention any of these in my statements which you know nothing about. Have you read my stuff? NO!!!!
Do you know what I focus on? NO!!!!
Do you have any business making assumptionns about me? NO!!!!

Do you have any right to tell me WHY I got the grades I got? NO!!!
I have nearly all A's excluding courses I didnt get accommodations BITCH! HOW DARE YOU TELL ME WHY I GOT THE GRADES I DID!!!
DID I SAY I DID POORLY? NOOOOOO!!!!!
DO YOU HAVE ANY FUCKEN CLUE WHAT I FOCUSED ON?  NOOOOO!!!!!!
DID I EVER SAY I MENTIONED IT IN THE MANNER THAT YOU ARE DESCRIBING? Do you know anything about what I DID fouc on? NOOOOO!!!!

The only thing you got right was that YOU ARE ASSUMING!!!
So shut the effin ASSuming up and ONLY SAY WHAT YOU CONCRETELY KNOW AND KEEP YOUR DAMN SPECULATIONS OUT.

I got rejected at Michigan State after being on wait-list for several weeks.  In the end, this means that i've been rejected from every school except the one that I wanted to go to the most. Ironic!

Today, I was awarded a huge fellowship from the University of Michigan - Rackham Merit Award for Science. This covers full tuition + benefits for 5 years. This does not change my original funding plan from the Ecology & Evolutionary Biology department (ie no additional money). However, it does mean that I am only required to teach for 2 years, instead of 3, and I get an opportunity for extra funding this summer.

So excited for the years ahead.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: President's/Deans lists several times, huge grant/scholarship from CSU system, several scholarships through Uni

Advice for those new to the process: start as early as you can with the process (ie write all your statements early with several drafts; email and develop relationships with potential PI's), and concentrate on fit rather than prestige.

microarray reacted to SmarteyMartey in Procrastinating Station
I was once a master procrastinator. Two years ago, my psych professor said the secret to stop procrastinating...is to stop doing it. ;-)  It is a CHOICE. Grad school is definitely not the place for that, especially if you want to do well.

I started to schedule my days...was it easy to follow a schedule? No. But you get drunk off the feeling of having everything done and not losing sleep, time, and the potential for an A by just following that schedule.

Schedule your days out from now on until grad school and get into the habit...either a schedule or a To Do List...find out what works for you. Look at your schedule/To Do list at the end of each day and determine how well you were able to follow it...then keep improving. This did not take me weeks to accomplish but i recognized that I NEEDED to get my act together.

Procrastination can bring down the best of us, but it is not a life skill that we want to keep with us during certain stages of our lives, that's for sure. Hope this helps.

Remember...schedule and give yourself breaks...BREAKS are important or you start to lose attention to what you're doing...and then the procrastination begins. Start to do your BEST to follow a schedule so that you can form the necessary discipline.

Honestly, you may never get rid of your procrastination urges entirely but they will minimize - significantly. You'll have your moments but OVERALL they will minimize SIGNIFICANTLY and THAT is the place you want to aim to get to. For right now.

Don't ever... ever ever ever feel pressured to stay somewhere that you are not interested in, even if the PI is like a father/mother to you. Never feel pressured to continue doing the same thing since you have prior experience in it. A ton of people make these mistakes and end up in an unhappy situation. Follow your dreams

I would say contacting a POI. I sent a short email about why I want to do research and the how I want to create an impact on the culture of computing. Got the POI to peek into my application profile. If I didn't contact a POI, I think I would have been just another applicant, waiting for admission results to come out in March or April.

Haha nice you like to make fun of someone who might suffer from depression. You aren't going to shame me for possibly having depression or having to take an anti depressant, I came on the forum and talked about it so obviously there is no shame here. It is a shame you would make a joke out of such a serious issue though. Very sad, shame on you. To answer your question, nope. I haven't gotten them as of yet.
As far as friends, no too concerned. We all know the only friend I am looking for!! As for the other kinds, no don't need those much. My actual friends annoy me enough right now don't need more. Anyways at least I wished this person luck.. That was pretty nice
