Stop that. You'll be fine. I have been reading this thread from the beginning and I can tell from your posts that you're intelligent and know what you're talking about with respect to your research interests. Don't get down on yourself and use this as motivation to improve your application in the case that you strike out (or get in somewhere but decide to reapply next year).

Also, you still have five schools. Your cycle is far from over.

    Cooperstreet, I PMed you.

Finally received the rejection email from Chicago. But they did offer me admission to CIR with a half tuition waiver.

I have had a truly unbelievable week, which is why I haven't posted on here in a while. Since last Tuesday, I've received five acceptances, bringing my record to 7 for 7 with 5 left to announce. That's about 7 more acceptances that I was expecting and I am still completely in shock.

To all of you who helped me through the long wait, thank you so much. You've been a godsend.

    Thank you, TheWalrus and Cane14!

Admission without funding is kind of a tease.  I got the same thing from Rutgers, but the Temple email sounded a lot more hopeful about a line of funding opening up.  I have my fingers crossed.

Hey congrats on Yale steedyue! Sorry I just caught up with the news. You had your significant other there right? What a brilliant turn of events! I am happy for you guys. I am sure you will be the beacon of hope for every couple out there struggling to make it work in this process. May you guys be the proof that sometimes things do work out, and it is indeed worth a try

First acceptance with money! I'm feeling approximately a thousand percent better right about now.

Well, a really quiet day... What big ones are still out there? Harvard, Yale, JHU, Penn, and then some of the more specialty programs and those doing rolling admission... I don't know about you all, but I'm ready for this process to start coming to a close. My days will be much more productive when this is all finished shaking out...

I guess I am just frustrated when people on the board post a rejection with something like "haha got into a better school anyway." My thoughts on this are: ok, good for you, you've made it. Now what is the point of your comment?
Are you arrogant enough to think that if you got into "a better school" you also automatically should be accepted everywhere?
Are you frustrated with this rejection—why would you be if you already got good options? So why being bitter/condescending?

P.S. unless the comment is a joke. Jokes. I get those.

    Edit: grammar

To HL Slam and any others fearing striking out this cycle, a few thoughts:

    1) These applications do not define who you are as a person, your intelligence, or your promise as a future academic. If you want to be an academic, you will find ways of strengthening your application and applying again in the future. There are several folks on this forum who should serve as an inspiration... I forget who it was, but I read from one poster that they nailed Columbia after 30 applications. There is hope!
    2) All the really good things in life bring with them the risk of failure. If you want it, don't give up. If you choose not to apply in the future, make it your choice. Don't let someone in the shadows drag you down.
    3) These applicaitons do not define who you are as a person. A good friend and immensely successful academic once told me that smart is cheap. It can be bought or found on any street corner. Instead, folks who show they can work hard and are of good character will find success in the end in whatever they do.
    4) Finally, if you decide an academic career is not for you (and really make it your decision!), remember, that you were even applying to these types of excellent schools suggests you have great skill. That skill can be turned into any number of exciting, meaningful, challenging, and fun careers.

In short - getting rejected is the worst. It is hard. But rest assured, it is not a judgment of you as a person. All works out in the end.

    Edited for terrible spelling.

There's a Harvard acceptance from March of last year with the comment "Only acceptance of this cycle! Don't lose hope at any time!" When my first few decisions were all rejections, I read that comment over and over.

Sending warm wishes for Yale, MIT, and Chicago MA acceptances your way...

I think we are (A) hungover from the Stanford/Columbia rejections, and (B ) have given up all hope of trying to predict MIT's html-infused admissions notifications.

To the person who was rejected from Stanford and wishes you'd told them you were African-American...

When the sting of the rejection wears off, I hope you feel pretty crappy about that comment. You should feel crappy about it.

This is a really rough cycle given that Hogwarts rejection... Still, I hear the DADA Department there has had a hard time keeping good faculty, so it may not be the best bet for the near future.
