  1. I got next to nothing done in the past three days because of debilitating migraines. I can't wait for my doctor's appointment so I can request a different treatment
  2. I'm also in the "wow, November is coming up quickly" panic. I've already requested my fee waivers since it's good to do that early. I took the GRE once but I'm currently studying for round two. My professors are helping me polish off my first SOP, then I have 9 more to do. I also have to request transcripts. Wow, lots to do. Plus filling out the applications themselves takes forever. I wouldn't be so behind if I wasn't studying so much for the GRE! Edit: totally forgot to mention that one of my LOR writers hasn't replied to any of my three emails (said yes to writing a few months ago in-person). It's not quite as difficult to get in touch with her grad student, but almost. Agh
  3. My opinion is that it can't hurt you to put it on your CV; I mean, it was Stanford. But I wouldn't put it in the SOP. I realized that you don't have to chronicle your research experiences start to finish in the SOP, in fact, that's usually not a good idea. My first two research experiences aren't even mentioned in mine because I've done more relevant and interesting things since then. That's what deserves the space in that document.
  4. I keep my toothbrush in a cabinet on the opposite side of the bathroom, it closes right up. Too bad my sister always leaves it open! My towel stays in my room as well. Glad I'm not the only one!
  5. Glad I got a 5.0 on my AWA but it's kind of a waste since I can't send a terrible Q score!

Can I ask how much the Q score was?

149 (37th percentile). Almost certain my retake will be better though!

Woo! You got this. Let's kill that GRE! :)

  6. It would actually only cost you $79 to buy the 30-day version (math and verbal)! For my first test, I only used free Magoosh materials, toying with the idea of buying the full thing. Ultimately I didn't do it but now I wish I did. I bought it for my second attempt and after two days I already felt more confident about the test. Just know that it can't hurt you, right? And like the above poster said, you'll love having the score predictor. They have plenty of RC questions you can practice. You can customize your practice sections to do combinations of up to 500ish unique Verbal questions.
  7. I agree with eyepod! Try some relaxation techniques and positive self-talk. Practice a breathing exercise that you can whip out during the test if you need to. I think you got the bad part out of the way and now that you know what to expect you can forget that first attempt ever happened and focus on your new scores, which will be better. Still review materials -- I'm also retaking with similar timeframes to you and have found Magoosh's 30-day study guide to be plenty of work. But make sure you are consistently getting enough sleep, especially the week of your exam! It allows you to actually store what you learned in long term memory. All in all, balance studying with self-care and you have a recipe for success! Edit - if your first deadline is Dec 17, you actually have plenty more time if you don't mind paying whatever fee to push that test date back. It only takes 10-15 days to send scores. For example: I tested on Oct 11, rescheduled for Nov 11, and my deadline is Dec 1.
  8. I was given a booklet of about 6 pages but you can certainly turn it in for more blank paper -- don't hesitate to ask them for it!
  9. Okay, thanks! Well, I actually did submit it to another journal but it was rejected. It wasn't an empirical study, so I wasn't expecting it to be a great fit for any national journals. I think it ended up being a good fit for my school's publication because they actually asked me to expand on my discussion/implications, and I was holding back on doing that with the other journal because I didn't want to wind up getting too emotionally involved/lend any personal opinions. (Topic was CTE in the NFL... I get very enthusiastic)
  10. I submitted a manuscript to my university's academic journal a while ago. It was a review paper that I wrote basically for fun over winter break. After it was accepted for a talk at a state-level undergrad conference, I figured why not submit it to my school's journal. Today they got back to me with an acceptance - yay! However, I'd like to see some people's opinions about how significant this actually is; I suspect not very. My school is tiny (< 1000 undergads) and the journal is interdisciplinary. It can be found by searching EBSCO, if that makes it any better. Big question is -- where on my CV does this go? Under 'publications' certainly seems to be a stretch.
  11. I used their rushed service, but not their *most* rushed. They have three shipping speeds; the normal speed was cutting it too close for my poster and the most rushed one was expensive and unnecessary for my needs. I ordered it on 10/3; it shipped on the 10th; I received it on the 14th. Had I planned this a little better and given it 3 full weeks to ship, I could have just used the normal $3 shipping. Even so, I saved money by doing this. The quality was great! They don't accept a submission that doesn't meet their quality standards (150 dpi I believe).
  12. I have similar interests to what you mentioned above -- I want to understand the mechanisms that drive unhealthy/risk behaviors, and I want to look into promotion of good health behaviors, and maybe even intervention research. To give you an idea of where this is leading me...I'm applying to social psych/general psych PhDs that have a department or faculty research focus on health (prevention and promotion). I am also applying to two public health PhDs because the research is essentially the same, despite coursework differences. I believe this path will lead me to a job in research: either with the government or in academia. The way you phrased your interests is somewhat different than how I describe mine; they seem more clinical. Maybe these interests are what a nutrition science graduate program might focus on? I don't know a lot about nutrition programs, but maybe that's something you could look into in addition to clinical health. Btw, I know CCNY graduate center has a program you could check out!
  13. TakeruK, I just have to say once again thank you soo much for this suggestion. I presented today with the fabric and it was fantastic -- I'm never going back to paper!! It was such a hit with everyone at the conference, and it saved me money and hastle. And, while I'm here, I also want to thank you for all of your helpful and polite answers, in general, across the forums -- you've helped quite a lot of people with your insight and advice
  14. Attended a great conference today! Presented research, received an award, and met some really cool people :-)

  15. I was pretty scared, too, but after I did it and got a few replies I was relieved and happy! Just have someone look it over for mistakes to make you feel more confident. It was a worthwhile thing for me to do because I learned about two retiring professors. And I also got a few positive comments about my CV, even from a PhD program that typically doesn't take students straight from undergrad (also a switch in fields for me in that case). That said, you make a good point about not having the time to learn about all new research. Try starting with someone whose work you feel that you know the best. And I mainly only emailed one professor per program. I only contacted a second if the first never responded or if the first wasn't taking students. I also only contacted programs with the strongest match... I think my top 6 out of 10. If you really don't feel comfortable, it's okay not to contact them. But keep an eye out for programs that encourage it on their website, just in case!
  16. Trying to decide which date to choose for a GRE retake, Nov 4 or 11. Deadlines are Dec 1. Anyone think it matters?

You should check to see how long it takes for ETS to have test results ready to send out. If it takes three weeks, you probably ought to pick Nov. 4

      It's 10-15 days so Nov 11 is booked :)

Also, so far I'm loving Magoosh! Like...I love these people.

right?! they're so awesome. they felt like my real friends by the time the entire month was over.

  17. When I asked my boss a few weeks ago for yesterday off: "Why" "I'm taking the GRE" *puzzled look* "It's like the SAT for grad school" "Ok. So what's grad school?" This is what happens when you work at a grocery store, I guess? I bet the conversation about taking the day off for a conference will be good, too.
  18. (wrong topic, sorry! Touch screens!)
  19. I took it today - Verbal comes first.
  20. Aside from the first one, which I took freshman year because I was curious, these practice exams were taken between June 13 and October 9 of this year. Princeton 1 - V 145 Q 145 Princeton 2 - V 153 Q 145 Kaplan - V 154 Q 148 ETS Paper - V 159 Q 151 ETS Powerprep 1 - V 159 Q 151 ETS Powerprep 2 - V 154 Q 152 Actual test - V 157 Q 149 Not what I was hoping for. Despite my friends telling me that this is a good score (???), I will be retaking the exam. Hard to say what was the most accurate. I bet if I took another Kaplan closer to my test date it wouldn't have been off by much.
  21. That's what I needed to hear, thank you
  22. Every single possible topic that you might see on the test is on the ETS website. But, honestly, don't waste time trying to read them all. Just practice a few and read the examples of a 6 in any GRE book. What helped me the most was practicing with friends- making pro/con lists together, coming up with all the assumptions, and basically sharing ideas.
  23. I was curious about some tips for what to do the day before my test. I thought this list had it all -- check it out if you're unsure of what to do! http://grockit.com/blog/gre/2013/09/25/study-week-gre/
  24. Thanks for all the tips! I ended up taking my ScoreItNow yesterday and I got a 5. And I think I could definitely improve because I saw all my mistakes at the end. So my question is, do you think a 5-6 on the AWA can lessen the effects that unimpressive Verbal and Quant scores have? I can't break 160 in practice so far on either section. But if I do well on writing... maybe GREs won't be such a big blow?
