  1. Forum University Speech Pathology And Linguistics, PhD (F14) Rejected via Other on 4 Mar 2014 A 4 Mar 2014 By "other" - a carrier pigeon brought me a note that said "use the discussion forum for discussions and use this board for admissions results". But I guess this repetative behavior qualifies as a form of speech pathology, so perhaps its part of the application process. And yes, I realize that this is a hypocritical mode of communication. Are people trying to get posted here...?
  2. cat Unfortunately, the cat consumed all glory of the moon and stars. It gave him severe anxiety, but also he received the power to fly. A joy. Suddenly...Bees! They flew around, jealous, plotting murder, arson, etc. They were searching for hundreds of floating wildebeest. These evil bees converged into a mega bee! Zooming fiercely throughout the glen until they could find unsuspecting marsupials, the bees settled on a caribou. Meanwhile, the cat soared through the aether, gathering bundles of tiny flowers for the wildebeests' protection. The flowers glowed bright as they bled starlight. This magic was transcendental and powerful. The cat
  3. It should be easier the second time if you've already done it before. This is like an exercise from my (only) writing class in college: only keep a few powerful ideas, and rewrite an essay based on those key sentences. Iteration can be helpful for the writing process; it could work out nicely for you!
  4. Motivation gone, Every assignment a chore... Is it August yet?
  5. Cooool! Great series. I was definitely more into SG-1 than any other Stargate series. Doing Babylon 5 now, which is a different kind of sci-fi... I feel like I missed something important!
  6. +free access to the amazing recreation center for PhD students!!! UMass' rec center is only for undegrads. They have a crappy little gym for grads.

  9. Knock knock. "Who is there?" Interrupting cow. "Inter- ...No, cow. Not this time."
  10. ;_; You are such a nice person!! Here's my post that is relevant to the topic: Cornell University Philosophy, PhD (F13) Rejected via E-mail on 3 Mar 2014 ♦ A 3 Mar 2014 The rejection letter from Ted Sider was friendlier than some acceptance letters I've received.
  11. Not to earn that brag, but you did. That's freakin' cool. Is he eccentric? He better be eccentric.

  13. Location Diversity of research opportunities within the department (strong research opportunities in both natural language processing and speech processing options within computer science!! this is not always a thing lol) Locale Very interdisciplinary! Students with all sorts of educational backgrounds work together on the same problems The area This wasn't a reason when I applied, but now I realize and am excited to add... ranking! Where it's located I just want to ask around about the Prof. and to visit the campus to make sure it's right for me, but really, this program sounds perfect.
  14. My advisor met with me personally on behalf of the department to tell me that I didn't get into the MS/PhD program, explained how fickle the process can be, and to say "We still love you". Literally. Word-for-word. XD

Not a problem! It was my last choice program because I've been there so long, and I got into my first choice already with funding. :3

That's good, since you're already in!! But I hope you get into the place that makes you happiest!

  15. Go you! I hope everything works out, and I'm glad to hear you've taken the steps necessary to make your life better. Keep it up!
  16. Bumping because I have the same question!
  17. I'm a very exclamation-point-y person!

  18. This whole experience has been great for filtering out family and friends that care vs. those who don't (for me, anyway). I'd share stories, but they're kind of bummers
  19. Oh, tech jobs are easy to find near Boston. That's a non-issue! I can't speak personally on Brown vs. NYU. I just know Brown has great name recognition and is closer to Boston. My friend who went there truly loved it, but he went for his undergrad and is doing his master's elsewhere. I don't know that NYU does not have these things (well, I know it's not as close to Boston as Providence is!), I just know that Brown does have them, off the top of my head!
  20. MIT posted rejections today!! I'm so excited to accept at USC without any doubt in my mind!!! ...After visit day. Next week!
  21. What kind of actual hell do you live in?!
  22. Yeah, I've been at UMass for years. I need to GTFO, haha. Plus, my SO's job ends in January, then he'll have nothing keeping him around except for waiting for me to finish my PhD! I'll wait to hear back from UCSD. But honestly, I can't imagine they'll be a better fit for me. If they are, let it be a wonderful, pleasant surprise!!
  23. Step 1 of my 3-step lazy plan: COMPLETE. Time to coast the rest of the semester in algebra! >D

  24. I feel so appreciated! But someone beat me to it. ;___;
