  1. Hmm, my icon looks more evil than I thought it would... Maybe I should do a Pokemon?

  2. That's how I feel, too! I have my heart set on USC. The only option I'll consider at this point is UCSD (I think it would've been UW if I got in, but even then, the research fit was forced). I wouldn't mind if UCSD rejected me so I wouldn't have to think about it!! Also, relevant to UMass questions earlier: I was supposed to ask today, but I didn't go in due to snow. I'll e-mail them instead!
  3. Just got a rejection that actually makes me really happy!! :D I want to spend my 20s in a beautiful area, and I'm sick of the Northeast weather. But if I got into a school like MIT or CMU, I would always have it in my mind "What if I went there...?", when I know I'm only going to accept an offer from USC or UCSD at this point. This is strangely relieving!

Welcome to sunny California, where we love to hit the beach and walk our dogs (and eat in and out).

Ah, SoCal. People here complain about sub-70 degree weather.

:DDDD I cannot wait, you have no idea!!!

  4. Seriously?!!! Awesome, thank you so much!! Great example of "wish I knew" information-sharing right there! edit: typo fix
  5. OK, I have my game plan: -Take one class pass/fail, -Get at least an A in the easy class, -Get at least a B in the elective class, -And get at least a C in the class I'm only taking to finish up a math degree. (This would be my first C.) My average for the semester will be at least a B, which is a 3.0, and can't bring my GPA down too much since it's only 9 graded credits. ...I swear I'm normally not this lazy!! I'm just kind of sick of the class I'm planning on getting a C in, and it's not relevant to my research!!
  6. I don't know anything about TAMU, but here's some information about CMU alums to help you make a more informed decision! Post-graduation salaries and statistics: https://www.cmu.edu/career/salaries-and-destinations/2013-survey/cit.html Specifically, here's ECE: https://www.cmu.edu/career/salaries-and-destinations/2013-survey/pdfs-one-pagers/ECE%20Post%20Grad%20Handout%202013.pdf
  7. I imagine it's different for different programs. I don't think anyone's been rejected from MIT explicitly yet, for example. ...But who cares! I'm just going to be optimistic and assume this is the case about the schools I've yet to hear from.
  8. I did this backwards, I looked for universities first (mostly based on location, and I tried the "big 4" for my field), THEN found potential advisors... and it looks like it worked out perfectly!

      Clearly something is working.

  9. So... What's ABD again? XD I love saying "Wazzou" for Washington State, but my hometown college became Worcester State University and now it's weird for me. Also, there are a million FSUs, I swear! Frostburg, Fitchburg, Florida,...

Thank you so much! You too, jzhu! And rostats, we're switching locales! I'm a UMass undergrad right now.
  11. Math prodigy (ha! trivial xD) (x12)
  12. I'm sorry to hear that. I really hope it goes better than expected. Who knows? Maybe if there's someone at the program who really has a similar research idea, they'll take you!
  13. HAHAHAHAHAHahahahahaha... +sobbing+ A lot. I don't even want to say it. Like, two and a half times as much as my state's average (which is $29k)*. I got sick multiple times after the refund date in my undergrad instutiton, and I couldn't get any financial aid (I mean, because my family's fine, so not without reason! I am not complaining!). The thing is: I owe my family so much money... But I'm allowed to start paying them back after grad school. The good news is, I don't plan on accruing any more debt to my family, or to anyone, in grad school! *According to projectonstudentdebt.org/state_by_state-data.php
  14. Pretty_Penny, I've read the responses and don't have much to contribute, but I want to ask: how are you doing now? Can you give us an update? Strangers on the internet are worried for you!
  15. What's your favorite school acronym? What redundant ones have mixed you up? Are there any that you still don't know what they stand for? I just deduced what UIUC is this morning, and feel strangely proud of myself.
  16. I also want to know the answer to this question... I have mostly A's in my majors. Would a semester of B's be critical to my future success? Or even C's? I'm switching one class to Pass/Fail, because there's just... No reason not to. It's just for a minor, and I'm allowed to do it. So in the end, this will only be relevant to 3 classes for me anyway.
  17. That's sick, congratulations!! Must've been phenomenal with such a quick response time. What brings you to the "Waiting It Out" subforum? Haha
  18. I am banned from buying those. But sometimes I try to convince my SO to get them for me when we're at the store together... XD
  19. It's crazy, I applied to 7 longshots (out of 8 total), and I'm still disappointed to get turned down. I had a similar situation to yours - I had one program in the bag, but not my ideal one - and this didn't seem to soften the blow. Rejection hurts. There's no two ways around it.
  20. I know UMD is open, because of friends' Facebook statuses. UMass is closed.
  21. Oh my goodness, peeeets!! :3 I have a kitty right now, I'll put up pictures of her eventually. Once I'm at my program and comfortable, I'm getting a dog. (Don't tell my S.O.! ) I kind of just want to adopt an old, lazy dog, one that just wants to be loved. I won't get any animal I don't have time to take good care of! In the long run, I want a big dog... A dog that I can ride into battle.
  22. Screw it, I'm just gonna ask other MA students interested in moving to SoCal if they want to pitch in and rent something together. XD Now's the time to meet people; we'd have a few months to get acquainted and decide if it'd work out!! (This sounds like a weird romantic comedy movie.)
  23. Acute angles (x11)
  24. I hate maxing out on my upvote quota.
  25. Differentiable manifold (Never! XD x10)
