Let's start the discussion for 2014!! Is it impossible to find apartments with 2 parking spaces in LA? Are there alternatives for the second car if we can only find apartments with one space? I'd like to get a 2BR apartment with my SO after my first semester.
  3. I finally got an acceptance and I will probably take the offer, so I started planning the move... It's already a nightmare!! I have so much to consider. It's the exact opposite end of the country, and I've only ever moved around Massachusetts, so when I have, it's never been in just one trip!
  4. Dependent variable (x9)
  5. It sounds like it might not have been that devastating. It was in small, italic, grey letters below the copyright information, according to commenters. But it's a less scandalous story when you acknowledge that! ;p (Don't get me wrong, I'm sure anyone who did notice it had a baaaad time.)
  6. Thanks, both of you, for your answers! You're right, rising_star, I should definitely consider going it alone! I love driving and I might really enjoy it. I guess it depends how dependable my car is, based on mechanics' assessment? I might like driving alone, but probably not being stranded alone. And as iphi brought up, I'm actually VERY attached to this car. I saved up for an Impreza of some sort and picked this one out! The RS is not a common car. That's why I'm considering an engine and drivetrain swap. It's for the sake of keeping my car and upgrading her the way I want to (I want a 6-speed,and my plan is to drop in an STi engine). It's not just for the trip! Though that brings to mind another question: having a car in LA... Haha. My SO just bought a car, and we plan on living together, but a lot of apartments only have one parking space! I think I'd still take mine, though, and maybe sell it in LA before he moves out with me if it turns out we don't really need two and there's no way to get a second space.
  7. I'm afraid to tell anyone else, I've gotten so many eyebrow raises, haha. The worst part is in addition to my main major, I have a second degree... In math.

  9. I love driving. I have a 2000 Subaru Impreza RS that I love. Unfortunately, she has 207,000 miles on her. I currently live in Massachusetts and got into school in Los Angeles. I'd love to make this move a road trip and travel across the country! I can afford the time. But I don't know if it's worth the risk if my car won't survive the trip. This trip might be safe enough if I'm going to get an engine and drivetrain swap done before I leave anyway. But I don't know if I could afford both that and the additional costs I might accrue traveling cross-country. I'm scared of breakdowns, especially in the middle of America where my kind of car is much more rare. I know to plan on budgeting more for this than I would for a trip along the east coast, for example. Are there any other car-related major costs I should consider besides gas and wear and tear? Is there anything anyone wish they knew before making a similar trip, and want to share with me now? And is there any graceful backup plan in case something does happen on the road? Right now, I'm thinking drive between cities with airports, just in case! Also, I plan on going with a friend. If something comes up and they won't be able to join me, I will not make the drive. I refuse to go alone! EDIT: The alternative is, of course, to sell my car! I'd like to start working on her now and get her on the market ASAP if this is what I decide to do.
  10. Can't sleep still, but for way better reasons! :)

  11. UMass, especially under McCallum. He's world-famous for his contributions to NLP. He's also a sweetie. Like, the man taught me that you can be respected and compassionate at the same time in academia. There's another professor who just started at UMass recently who's applying NLP to the medical domain. Her name is Hong Yu. There's also the CMU Language Technologies Institute. EDIT: Also, double check UCLA. I SAS going to apply there this year, but didn't think there was as much NLP going on there any more, so I skipped it. But I did this whole thing really backwards and chose schools based on location, THEN checked for research fit, lol
  12. Good luck!! I think they might still consider waitlisted applicants until April, and I imagine that because of the school's position on most people's lists (I know it's not actually this simple) that they let in a good handful of people late. Like someone gets into UW then turns it down for MIT, which bumps up someone who got waitlisted at UW and was holding onto their UCSD acceptance in the meantime, which frees up a slot at UCSD, etc. Like I pointed out earlier, last year there were changes in application status in April! (maybe I'm just hopeful XD)

  15. Square matrix (x5)
  16. I'm not sure, but I'll ask that when I go in, too!
  17. On a related note, if you have any questions about UMass, I'm an expert! I used to give department tours, haha
  18. Email contact. I can ask them Tuesday how the process is going. I love my school, but I already know I'll take USC over any offer they give me, so I don't mind if I'm accidentally abrasive at all. ;p
  19. University of Southern California's CS PhD visit days (they really were that specific in the email, though I'm not sure it matters) are March 6th and 7th.
  20. I think UMass hasn't sent all their acceptances out. I haven't heard anything yet, and I was contacted by a POI whom I didn't even apply under... She just saw my application and sought me out! I was also told by people in the department my chances are good! So I'm like 70-75% sure there are more acceptances to come.
  21. Conduction equation (x4)
  22. ^This. Plus, there are paid research opportunities in the field, so it's a good option for many reasons!
  23. Tangent line (3×)
  24. I was going to text my friend that I can't make it to Katsucon due to weather, so I was dreading my phone, when I saw an email that said "congratulations"! I knew what it must have meant, so I yelled out loud "where?!!", which scared boyfriend immensely, haha!
