  1. +looks at beer on desk+ I think I'm celebrating anything these days. Today is "first last test ever".
  2. cat Unfortunately, the cat consumed all glory of the moon and stars. It gave him severe anxiety, but also he received the power to fly. A joy. Suddenly...Bees! They flew around, jealous, plotting murder, arson, etc. They were searching for hundreds of floating wildebeest. These evil bees converged into a mega bee! Zooming fiercely throughout the glen until they could find unsuspecting marsupials, the bees settled on a caribou. Meanwhile, the cat
  3. I have one piece of advice for you: Groucho Marx glasses. They'll never see it coming.
  4. Ooooooh trust me, it's because of smart phones. At least for me. Going to thegradcafe was my next plan of action!
  5. I think after the visit day I'll know for sure. At this point I'm convinced USC is a better move for me across the board. As long as I like the area, it's as close to a perfect fit as I could possibly imagine. So yeah, game plan: visit day, then decide. if it goes well, screw it! I'll at least tell UMass (politely) that I've found an offer I'd prefer. Maybe I'll still consider UCSD... Hopefully they reject me and make it easier. Lol
  6. I couldn't think of one when I read this, but I realize that I have a few academic "hobbies"! -Neuroscience (just getting into; hardly know anything yet) -Social justice (not well-read, but familiar with and actively involved in) -Nutrition (decently well-read in) -Physics (know way less than I should) Also, in general, languages. To-date: Spanish, Latin, Russian, German, Japanese, ASL. Best at Spanish and Russian! What I actually study: computer science, mathematics, and linguistics I also just realized this thread is kind of just "list your hobby", not your intellectual pursuit. XD Whoops! Fencing. Grappling. I love aggressive sports for some reason! Cooking. Singing. I want to go back to acapella singing in school, if I can. If not, I'd like to try hip-hop dancing. Alcohol. Beer and wine. Coding. Hackathons. Puzzles. Competitions for these things. Cosplay. Video games.
  7. Still funny to me... I go to the University of Massaaachusett
  8. That makes a little too much sense... XD My advisor said that she had no idea how I would get any work done if I actually went to UC Santa Barbara. Too pretty for its own good lol

  10. Saw one from UC Santa Cruz that just said "Surfs down."
  11. I only applied to schools in SoCal (+1 safety, +longshots). The weather is one of my highest priorities! Maybe it's a good thing I haven't done research yet...
  12. edit: posted in the wrong thread. Was wondering where that went, thought it got deleted somehow ._.

Cooooool! :DDD Glad to see I'm bad at many fields, haha!

Aced the test that I was studying for, so I'm stoked. Time to cruise and get C's the rest of the semester. (Kidding! I think?)

  16. Very helpful; I've been wondering about this question for a while. Thanks!

  20. @starofdawn, That makes sense! I wonder what the webinar will be like? Skyping the beautiful campus? Lol USC actually has a better program for my field. UCSD is ranked 14th in CS on USNews, whereas USC is ranked 20th (really that's pretty much the same bracket of ranking, IMO). But UCSD's strengths lie in its diverse department: they're good at theory, programming languages, systems... And that's great. But they don't even rank in AI according to this resource, whereas USC is 15th! I hadn't realized this school was "better" in my specific field! Plus, they're clearly interested in me if they accepted me at this point. Some students are only just hearing back now. And they offered a generous fellowship! I did this arse-backwards and applied to programs based on location, then checked for close fits for research, because I haven't really done research yet... I know, it's strange. XD I was ready to go natural language processing, or speech processing, or computational neuroscience... But I happened to find a group with incredibly interesting research projects at USC and an advisor who sounds really, really nice! Plus, they have this kind of transparency between departments that makes the school unique. Their research is very interdisciplinary. It sounds great for me! So USC has the rank, location, attitude, and research that suits me. Really, I don't know how UCSD could be better for me. And I hope UCSD sees that, that the fit is forced, so they'd just reject me... It'd make life so much easier.

  22. I did! But what the heck? I didn't hear about no webinars! D: Maybe it's different what they provide for different fields? I'm going for CS visit days next week (March 6th and 7th), but that's all I've heard about! Also, right after my last post on this thread, someone made a new thread for USC Price... it made me sad lol. Price is on the main campus, and you don't see me making a Viterbi thread... edit: I guess you're right, it's only February, and someone just posted about getting accepted into the same program as me! There's more to come after all. I guess it's weird because I only really applied to two schools I was interested in: USC and UCSD. And I got into the better one for me, so the decision's pretty easy!
