Seriously- why can't people just let people be who they are and not date them... ? More irritated by that link than anything else. Just sounds like whinning.... she "lost respect" for him. So judgemental... people try too hard to fit themselves into relationships they don't belong in, like jamming two misfit puzzle pieces together. If you don't want to date a student or a professor... then don't.

I know white girls culturally appropriate. Not saying that I think poster isn't justified in her frustration and irritation at that. Just saying that she doesn't have a leg to stand on if she's assuming that everyone she's looking at is culturally appropriating without knowing their story. As she said, since she looks white probably some men and women of native-mexican decent would probably think the same of her. I am a mixed race person of ambiguous skin color and no one has ever been able to guess my ethnicity by looking at me. I can't decide what's more offensive, when someone imposes an ethnicity on me, or when they ask me the oh-so-politely phrased question "what are you?"
Point being: You don't fucking know people until you know them. So give them the benefit of the doubt.
and Klimt is awesome.

I love Shakespeare. So much fun (yeah... USD/Old Globe ... sigh). Right now I'm prepping for Theseus in Two Noble Kinsmen. Anyone else working on something fun?
[oh, and one good thing about not getting in to grad school this year: local company is doing Coriolanus... that's a bucket list role for me]

So, what I think is a really good option is buying fresh ingredients to make something that will last a little while in the fridge.
Like...
butternut or acorn squash, carrots, turnips, apples...
squash in the microwave for a few minutes, then put everything on a cookie sheet, sprinkle with EVOO maybe some salt, pepper, cinnamon, roast for 10 min.s
heat up some chicken broth
put all the roasted stuff in a blender with a couple pieces of ginger, pour into the chicken broth and there's soup for the week!
Last Sunday I made some turkey chilli which is basically turkey, tomatoes, peppers, onions, a little bit of garlic, and spices and, again, good for the week!
It's an inexpensive and easy option that is also healthy.
I think the most important thing is not eating anything processed. What, 70% of our immune system is in our gut? People don't realize the damage they do by ingesting all the chemicals in the majority of our food. It's why there's so much food allergies now a days... and cancer, and most other illnesses as well.
I mean, I'm not a nut about it... I just ate an entire pack of graham crackers... but starting TOMORROW, no more processed food. Startiiiiing... now!

Yup! A past co-worker of mine was Wovoka's relative, through the latter's "adoption." His family has always been in that area, though, so it was amazing to have someone who knew the significance of every tree, canyon, river elbow, field, mountain face.. pretty amazing. Apparently people still go to Yerington to pay their respects to Wovoka; the people who own the farm where a Ghost Dance rock corral is located have woken up smiling a few times to the sound of drums, singing, flutes, etc. coming from the corral. The Ghost dance was more or less all good & dandy in the Basin & Plains, but the Navajo — who, at least now, have a relatively huge membership — had (have?) a lot of religious ghost taboos, so the idea of bringing the dead (who never really left unless they were excellent people) back wasn't too popular.

Hah, sorry. From reading your last post I thought you were Native. My bad. Yea, generally speaking a NA tattoo on a non-NA is a bad idea. Never well received. Also, though, I had a TOTALLY different understanding of what the Ghost Dance was and how it was received... Wovoka, right? He was a prophet. He predicted the second comming of Christ and gave the people the ghost dance to inspire hope. I mean, I know each tribe gave it their own meaning, really, but there was no negative energy associated with it; except for the white people.

True, very true. Things above the collarbones & on the hands are a big to-do. Fortunately, archaeology is a really body mod-friendly field! &, of course, I'm not going to get something distastefully offensive stamped on my forehead.
Ahh, I gotcha. Man, if you can stand the pain of traditional scarification & tattooing, power to ya. I guess the pain holds the meaning or the healing, but I would probably fail my initiation rights.
You other tattoo idea sounds awesome! I dig it. Also, that "super cool Native tattoo, bro!" bit reminded me of how it's "cool" to get tattoos of dream catchers, Zuni fetishes, dancing kachina, skulls with warbonnets… all without having the slightest idea what the spiritual importance of any/all of them is. :| See also: the Kokopelli craze of the 90s & early 2000s. Makes me face palm so hard.

I had the same thought, actually. Depends on the tribe, & the person you're talking to. My consulting experiences have always been fine, but they've always been off-rez & with a non-Native crew, save for a few monitors; I've heard plenty of terrible stories from peers, too, though. The choice of what you'd get would matter; facial tattooing, for instance, is often a serious honor & sign of resilience or of a particular social status (horizontal or vertical) that loses its meaning when taken out of context. I guess something like dots/stippled tattoos to show strength on the body might be fine, but... eh, I dunno. Mixed feelings, I guess. I would love to have something related to the Ghost Dance & its offshoots (especially the Earth Lodge & Dreamer religions) tattooed on me, but even the patterns on Ghost Shirts are so important & so spiritually powerful that I don't think I could bring myself to do it. It's my passion, but it's not my history, as much as I'm interested in preserving it.
Visual appeal is a subjective thing (mostly), & tattoos are just a means of embodying what you personally find important & visually appealing. & sometimes, it's just about aesthetics! My S.O. has a forearm full of fire-scarred trees, species that are local to where he grew up; everyone always asks if it's because he's in fire, but he just likes the way it looks – no meaning beyond that. Point is, I think if a tattoo has appeal or meaning for someone, as long as they're 100% happy with how it looks, they're probably aware that not everyone who sees it will find it as appealing as they do.. but someone else's opinion is rarely the reason behind getting a tattoo.

Just checked the mail. Still nothing, though I live on the East Coast so if I'm getting a thin envelope it will probably take another day or two to get here. I got TWO phone calls after 3:00 today (I assume that theater people aren't getting together to make any decisions before noon, so 3:00 my time). My heart jumped both times. But it wasn't USD. Heh.

AwesomeBird reacted to novacancy in Waitlist Agony - 2014 Edition
Hi everyone,
Having been informed that I'm on the waitlist for my top choice program today, I decided to start this thread. We're in for a bumpy ride--as if waiting it out hadn't been stressful enough!
It's hard to tell which posts on the results page came from people who were accepted/rejected off the waitlist in previous years unless they've mentioned so in the comments section. Because of this, I decided to summarize the information found on the 2013 waitlist thread:
I tried my best to populate the table! Yes, I do have a LOT of time.
I guess my point of posting all of this is to show us all that there is hope. 18 of 28 posters who reported decisions on that thread got in off of the waitlist. Clearly we could have some reporting bias going on here, but nevertheless… This is pretty encouraging.
Best of luck to everyone! I'm told I'll hear back in March!

You're absolutely right Pumpkinpie. Thanks for giving me a smile. I tend to be realistic (ok, pessimistic) sometimes, but there's no need to borrow that trouble. Obviously if they've decided to accept people, they've almost certainly notified them (like that's the fun part right? wouldn't you tell them right away?) but maybe they haven't made the final cut.
And omg yeah, I thought I was bad about obsessively checking... but figuring out what day of the week. Heh. Well let's just say I can relate, and no you're not crazy.
:-D
Oh, and I'm not giving up at all. It's going to happen, it's a matter of when. I mean, I was making a list yesterday of where I would apply for 2015 if I don't get in. But it sure would be nice no to have to go through this again.

I love this one: !
For those who may not get it, deaf or hard of hearing people can "turn off" their hearing at will if they wear a CI or hearing aid (or permanently if they don't) .

I never made reservations in advance. It isn't a problem unless there's a dog show in town, in which case you might have trouble getting a room and/or rates may go up. There are also lots of other pet-friendly hotels depending on the individual owners. I also stayed in a Days Inn, Belmont Inn, and something else I can't remember. The website I mentioned before will let you search for pet-friendly accommodations in a city AND tell you if they charge a pet deposit or fee. I didn't book in advance because I like the flexibility of stopping sooner than planned or driving longer if I'm not tired. That said, I also never arrived anywhere at 3am. I did the bulk of my driving during the day, with an effort to avoid rush hour in any city I was driving through. So, I'd wake up at 8am, hit the free breakfast (if there was one, there isn't at Motel 6) or get breakfast, then get on the road around 9. Stopped between 12:30 and 2pm for lunch and then the dinner stop was usually wherever I was staying for the night.
