Haha...nice suggestions, but won't allow it. I've hit a stride.

  2. I would double-check programs you're interested in as far as when they start new grad programs...most, if not all, begin in Fall. I did a quick Google search and found this (maybe reach out to these people): Thomas Murphy who is a Latter-Day saint anthropology. He teaches in the Department of Anthropology at Edmonds Community College in Washington state. LDS anthropologist: John Sorenson - http://www.utahadvance.org/?p=312 LDS anthropologist: William Wilson Book of Mormon Archaeology and Anthropology (has articles and authors so you can look them up): https://byustudies.byu.edu/showTitle.aspx?title=8890 Lastly, I'm going to agree with SaraB on her "but getting into a masters program might be easier and would allow you to prepare for a PhD" I was thinking of a combined masters/PhD program as well, but the professor I spoke with told me after our conversation that the Masters would be more beneficial to me and I'm going to suggest the same to you. It will really help you get the attention you deserve from professors, give you a chance to network and really find other professors/researchers with similar interests as you and figure out how to research exactly what you want and find the resources to do so.
  3. Hi SaraB! I moved from Arizona to Boston for my program. So far so well. I love my cohort. We already hang out at the tavern close to us and talk about football. The professors are amazing. One had a bbq at his place. They treat us like family members and I couldn't be happier. Some of my classes are a bit odd in how they are structured, and the amount of time we actually discuss our assigned readings. I'm taking three classes: theory, methods and a public archaeology course. It is really interesting to hear the 2nd years discuss concepts as compared to the new years like myself. Also, there is a lot of opinions being tossed around from different experiences everyone has had, which has created interesting conversation. Other than that, I love Boston! I'm finally getting to experience Fall the way I always wanted to throughout my life. However, it is VERY cold to me already. I'm already bundled and layered up! How is sunny Cali treating you?

I am actually so glad that I'm entering into graduate school married. It provides a little bit of stability to my life and she helps me out so much.

  7. I've always thought it's best to talk about it than think about it. Wait until you see your grade and if it is not as good as you'd hope it was and without comments from the professor, approach the professor and discuss it. Communication is the key and the professor should be able to give you valuable critique and comments on how to improve from this point on, but until you get your paper back, don't let the stress and worry defeat you like this. In addition, when you talk to your professor bring up how you can better your public speaking and presentation skills. If your professor is not making himself approachable, I bet there are resources on campus that can help with public speaking, and I know for a fact all universities have places to go to improve your writing skills. There is always help out there.
  8. I stayed in-state for my post-bac, but my university did have a pretty reputable program for it's 4-field approach to the degree. So, I suggest you compare the program, maybe talk to the director and figure out if it's worth the move. If quality is your determining factor, then that's the road to take to get your answers.

Something I figured out while reading Kenneth Burke over the past two weeks - skim the whole piece, then read the conclusion carefully, then go back and read the introduction carefully, especially paying attention to words that identify the research question/the way the paper is organized, THEN when you skim, you'll have a better sense of when you need to slow down and pay attention to a section.

    4. AKCarlton

      AKCarlton

NavyMom...I have noticed that a lot of paragraphs are devoted to "elaboration" and "examples", so I tend to skim over that to get to the core of what the chapter is trying to teach me, because we discuss it in class and apply it to our field.

  12. taking a break from reading to actually socialize with the first and second-years in my cohort.

that should help staying healthy and sane.

  13. Agree with the last two comments...and just want to voice the opinion that I was told to never go to grad school without funding. Definitely ask yourself if you're willing to pay for your degree (on top of moving to your program, rent, food, transportation, insurance, etc).
  14. I will elaborate further. Call the programs you intend to apply to and ask what their general GRE scores are for those who have been accepted in the past few years, and also ask them how they feel about GRE scores in particular. Mine have all said it wasn't the final deciding vote of who did and did not get into their program. I had really general GRE scores and was accepted to 3 out of 4 programs I applied to and the 4th one wasn't really a good fit to begin with but I wanted to see for myself.

  16. I was in the process of completing my final semester of school and preparing my applications, as well as working. I did not have time nor the money to fly out and visit any of the universities I applied to last year. However, I maintained consistent conversation via e-mail, and it went well. No e-mail went unanswered and to me, that seems like the best option for people in a similar situation, like you. I think I only called one university actually, and that was the one university I was rejected to and I wasn't surprised. After the phone call with the professor I was interested in working with it was quite evident we were not as good a "fit" as I had originally believed. With that being said, I would suggest an e-mail introduction and ask them what their preferred method of communication is and slightly hint at your desire to do a Skype interview, and just go from there. But do not think your inability to do a campus visit will harm you too much. Best of luck!
  17. Have you already begun to connect with Brenda Baker and ask if she is accepting grad students? It is one of the best bio arch programs out there, and thus, one of the most competitive. I would start talking with her and ask her how you can make yourself stand out from the rest. Maybe look at recent theses and see if there is a common theme as far as research work and use that in your SOP as an angle that you're interested in the same topics. Definitely will have to argue why their program is the best fit for you, and what you can also bring to their program.

  19. I would start your SOP with the grandmother anecdote. And I saved mentioning my lower GRE scores toward the end of my SOP, the second to last paragraph. Thus, I believe that would be the best area to mention your GPA...
  20. I'm sorry, but the homesick thing can and will dissipate soon enough. Me and my friend I've made here in Boston literally moved across the country (me from Arizona and her from California) and we don't even have time to be homesick with the workload we each respectively have in our programs. Stick it out. I am missing Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Years with my family whom I love to death...because airfares don't decrease in price until after, but they already promised to celebrate Christmas with me in January when I make it back. Is your cohort not making an effort to befriend you? If not, break the barrier and start connecting with them. So to answer your question: Is this ultimately the wrong reason to transfer? .... I honestly think it is...if you love Math as much as you say you do, don't ever give up this opportunity. Especially since you were immediately accepted into a PhD program! I do apologize if this came across as crude...but you need to realize at this point in your life you're going to be moving and growing and starting to experience new things quite often...I have had to remind myself of this many many times because of how close i am with my own family. But this is your time in life to create a life of your own. Make friends who will become your family for the time being. Embrace it, don't fear it.
  21. No, it won't make a bit of a difference. I didn't send mine out either cause I needed to contact the departments to get a sense of what they each considered a good score...which would let me decide if my scores were good enough to send, or if I should retake the GRE...doesn't matter if you send immediately or weeks after. However, like everyone is mentioning, you will have to pay. But I'd rather be confident in sending my scores.
  22. Having one of those moments where I wonder how I got into this program since I'm the only one who has no field school experience.
